The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

he sang about peace in the valley, but in the end we see he didn't know how to make it happen.

Ed Sullivan asked him not to sing this song but Elvis was adamant. Why? He’d promised his mama. It was her favourite song.

For a performer who had such a wild image and was considered a moral threat, to sing this song so beautifully must have captured a lot of hearts.

The story I was told (I forget who or where) in regards to this performance, was that when Elvis announced to his manager and the show producers that he wanted to sing this song on TV, they desperately tried to talk him out of it, saying it was foolish to sing a church song on the Ed Sullivan Show, and that he'd ruin his career if he did so. Elvis was a decent sort of person, but he was also not above pulling a Prima Donna act if it meant he would get his way regarding something important to him. So, his response was something like: "I am Elvis Presley. Peace In The Valley is my mother's favorite church hymn. I WILL sing it live on TV for her, and I don't care if I ruin my career." ... Well they could tell they weren't going to win the argument, so they just let him go do his thing. The song ended up being a huge hit, and the rest, as they say, is history... ♥

Elvis loved gospel more than any other music. People said Elvis knew hundreds of gospel songs

Among the many things to appreciate about this performance is that it was a nice little glimpse of the “real Elvis.” That beneath all the BS, all the sexualization, all the drugs, all the scandalous affairs, was a sweet, family-oriented, God-fearing, all-loving Christian gentleman. Good on Ed Sullivan and his production team for letting Elvis honor his roots, his faith, and his true self through this performance, despite their initial hesitation.
