Education Reimagined: Student-led Learning | Dr. Catlin Tucker | TEDxFolsom
Video Overview & Insights
Record numbers of teachers are leaving the profession, and too many students report negative feelings about school. Dr. Catlin Tucker addresses the urgent need to reimagine education and create more effective, equitable, and student-led learning environments. It’s time to transform classrooms into collaborative spaces where educators work alongside students, creating a more sustainable and fulfilling teaching and learning experience for everyone. Dr. Catlin Tucker is a bestselling author, international trainer, and keynote speaker. She was named Teacher of the Year in 2010 in Sonoma County, where she taught for 16 years. Catlin earned her master’s in education at the University of California at Santa Barbara and her doctorate from Pepperdine University. Catlin has published nine books, including The Shift to Student-led and The Complete Guide to Blended Learning. She hosts The Balance podcast and is active on X @Catlin_Tucker and Instagram @CatlinTucker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
As I enter my third year teaching, I had thought that I'm a step closer to mastering the profession. Wrong! There is a link between adaptability and longevity that an extraordinary teacher would acknowledge. A quote that I appreciate from this video is “Teachers cannot bear the burden of student learning alone. Students must become self-directed.” This allows me to reimagine the classroom as a place of active learning, not passive learning. As students find their roles in the classroom as tinkerers, explorers, debaters, etc. they can take ownership of the content as they are fully capable.
More User Perspectives
As both a student and a teacher, I believe the most important part of learning is genuinely caring about it.
@CJArchiveClipsThis seems very reasonable, but I will always grain-of-salt it with any person who won't stop flexing biceps, being obviously consciences about how they appear to others. Consider the eyebrows, physique, careful dereliction of phrasing... Advice: Do not disagree with or disappoint this woman. She knows how everything, in her mind, is supposed to go. 🫡
I'm far more leary of the person than the message.... is what I'm saying. 😮💨
This sounds nice but I wish she had fleshed it out, given some actual examples of how she would do this. What would this look like in a classroom?
@architennisThe idea of a student centered class has been proposed since the 90s and it all sounds great. It is just sometimes not possible to create a learning environment with thirty 15 year old students who are not interested in cooking, history, maths or English. We need more resources in education and less in weapons
@hueso381Common sense? Right way of doing things? What’s that? -lawmakers
@DJ5thousandStudent led learning is a cancer in public schools. This is all just the same propaganda they’ve been pushing for decades. It doesn’t work.
@TDP-sasquatchSure, but how?
@nereeces8503Hello Dr. Catlin. I am a 5th grade teacher and I often wonder how I could make my instructional pratice better. I love the idea and concept of students taking ownership i their learning you presented. Thanks for sharing. My question is what does looks like on the ground? Given all the planning and preparation variables, how can that be accomplished. Can you please provide examples of how it is being practiced in the classroom and how it can be done seamlesly. A video demonstration would be helpful. Thanks
@dr.shalanelawrence8611Wow so disconnected.
@brendalafrance6556Agreed
@fantasticgamer6761Please WATCH

@davidvaldez2346This is word vomit
@davidvaldez2346This talk is hard to listen to. It's not the info, it's the speaker that is old fashioned and outdated
@davidvaldez2346Lost my excited possible full buy-in around 2 mins+. Students ARE tired at school: Fortnight, doomscrolling, lack of time management and parenting.
Watching the rest anyhow, though -am hopeful.
Some great ideas, and as a Gifted -Ed Teacher, I am able to do some, but overall, career classroom Teachers have almost zero autonomy/creativity these days, so no -go. Wish it were different.
Teachers are replaced by ai; let mentorships and trade skills take precedence. The era of schoolhouse is over.
@FlowerLeafRLWhat I would have wanted to see is a little video clip demonstrating all that was explained in action. Good presentation, Professor
@hallaloableWe will have to fix the standardized testing then as well.
@tulsabelleGreat talk Dr Catlin Tucker, Thank you.
@LauraJadeElliottAnd the question, how,,,,,, how to do that,,,, someone please share your experience as a teacher if you can do this,,, i always think the same, they students need to have self driven learning, what i dont know is How.
@CrystalArt10All these ideas are good, but the question is how to do it. Not all schools or even governments for that matter have enough funding to put those changes in place
@notthatoneorthoseonesas i've watched my sons step through the same dysfunctional education system that i grew up with, i've thought more and more about what simple changes we could make to improve education. there are so many. it's quite affirming to hear other voices championing the ideas of student-led learning. these days, i champion the merits of mastery vs. rote memorization and standardized test scores.
i tend to work through ideas by writing software. i'm currently experimenting with simulations and time studies to see if it's possible to support pupils and gurus in a community of, say, the collection of students and teachers in a high school, in the logistical complexity of getting focused groups of pupils learning exactly the next step to mastery in a discipline, that they are prepared to learn from the guru best suited to teach them.
ie. instead of large, long classes in which only a few students are getting exactly what they need, we enable gurus and pupils to self-organize into smaller, shorter focused groups in which every moment is meaningful for everyone in attendance. mathematically, the idea works. practically, there are hurdles to overcome, not the least of which is an education system that has refused to change, to adapt, since before i first set foot in a class room.
This is the kind of forward thinking that helps societies evolve
@TransitSpoofWhen students feel like their voice matters, they show up differently. We need to create more classrooms that empower them, not just instruct them.
@leilaniresterdinMakes sense, things keep advancing entertainment, sports and businesses... seems weird actually that education hasn't kept up
@sylzoor4183This would be really wonderful for those who need to see the big picture in terms of what their working towards
@gabrieldmateoSo would the teacher be replaces by AI? Would the students even need to go in to the school? It's an interesting idea, would love to know more about how it would actually happen
@alicjakmusiaKids learn best when they're in charge. Makes total sense, though it's a little scary!
@dustinprichardsThis talk really resonated! We need to move beyond memorization and create engaging learning experiences for students!
@stanforeman3951My kid lost 2 years in school because of the pandemic and we're still dealing with the fallout of that... can't help but wonder if that impact would have been way less if this sort of teaching was already in effect
@laycienegaIt's interesting because things like sports and art teach us by doing, not just listening and following instructions... maybe all parts of education should be like?
@TheRealLunaTechMmmm I don't know about this one. What about students who just have no interest or motivation?
@StirGlassHourI wonder how different my academic outcomes would have been if things were like this when I was in school. I just had no interest and none of my teachers could really get it to connect with me
@dakjussord821I agree teachers should be there to guide students and if we focused on building AI up to help manage all the "testing" side of things it would really free up some time for teachers
@blanchebosdetI feel like this would also help identify learning disabilities and neuro-divergence wayyyy earlier
@BeenFoundTwiceIf this had have been an option for me during school I think I would have done really well. I've always been better at self motivating.
@WhitePaperAdvertisingAmazing... I think by letting kids interact with tech mostly at home they're getting the wrong impression that it's a toy or just for leisure when really it's a tool that has so many practical applications.
@COCOtheBRATIMO the whole issue with education atm is that it's based around standardized testing, and training for skills/jobs that just aren't really relevant anymore.... as long as we're working towards improving that I think we'll be okay.
@edingutenberg9797Could be huge if done right
@evanesternegI agree it's clear that the old way isn't working. The sheer number of teachers leaving the profession speaks for itself on that one
@yuvalloveWe also need to be asking what skills are we actually trying to impart on our students? The world is changing so rapidly we need to be fluid in terms of what and how we can teach and I think these ideas could really help make that a reality
@annerossiterCan definitely see the value in this, especially with letting technology handle some of that information transfer so teachers can focus on observing/building relationships with the students.
@heatherrausch1987This was strange to hear because for me and my kids it's kind of the opposite. I've given them very minimal access to technology at home whereas at school they use laptops and all kinds of other things
@zubairtzThis just makes sense. It might also help in terms of bridging a certain gap I can see emerging where students are great at using app based tech but don't really know their way around "business" related tech
@chelseaavaonil1380Definitely time for teachers and systems to evolve and explore all the options that tech can provide them. So many tools that can enhance learning that just aren't being used
@basilfaulty7643If more people knew that our education system was based on something the Prussian empire did when it invaded Poland as a way of essentially brainwashing their youth maybe we'd have reimagined it a long time ago
@czarcasm2168I wonder how immersive tech could help with learning certain things! I just did VR training for a new job and not only was it really cool but I actually feel prepared in a way that no other training has ever made me feel
@florenciaconde3817I think having that kind of system in place at high schools would also generate a lot of excitement for the "next step" of education. Like if the students gained more control as they went through their school years, it could really shift their perception of learning in general!
@franhustardAbsolutely spot on. The access kids have to immersive experiences even just in their own homes is so far beyond the tech they have access to in schools. Would seem worlds apart for them
