Before venturing into what happens in space first we need to figure out what happens here on Earth. There appears to be a conflict between the effects of buoyancy and gravity. It appears that buoyancy describes why some materials appear to defy gravity. This study is an attempt to explain, using common sense (no need for complex maths), why 'gravity' as such cannot be used independently when removed from the equation for buoyancy. It get this apparent independent use from when calculating the speed of falling objects in air. However when properly applied in the broader sense of physics it becomes unstuck since when falling in air buoyancy must still be used. Buoyancy or upthrust, is the force exerted by a fluid opposing the weight of a partially or fully immersed object. Generally it is assumed that this only applied to objects immersed in a liquid. However it equally applies to object immersed air. Air or any other type of gas or liquid can be considered as a medium for purposes of calculating buoyancy. Buoyancy is created by the difference between the density of an object and the density of the fluid in which it is immersed. A steel ball dropped in air is virtually unaffected by the density of the air. This will mean that it will fall at a 'g' rate of 32ft/sec2 which every school boy knows. However if the steel ball is dropped into a container of oil then it will still fall but not at 32ft/sec2 but a slower rate due to the density of the oil. If a piece of wood is dropped in air it will fall, not necessarily at 32ft/sec2 but at a slightly slower speed depending on the density of the wood. The same thing applies if the wood is dropped into a container of water but because the wood is less dense than the water it will float, thus defying gravity! Also depending on the density of the wood it will float either higher or lower in the water. What this means is that 'g' can only be used accurately when used in a buoyancy equation along with the other factors in the equation. It would be like removing 'V' from Ohms law and trying to apply it independently from Resistance and Amps. It cannot be done. This means that the argument for stating that gravity is what holds the Earth's atmosphere in place is wrong. With the Earth's atmosphere being next to the vacuum of space, then the atmosphere would dissipate immediately into the vacuum of space. Nobody would argue that if a container had the air pumped out and held a vacuum and that opening a valve at the bottom of the container then air would immediately fill the vacuum in defiance of gravity. The same must apply to the Earth's atmosphere. Things that defy gravity but not buoyancy - warm air rises in cold air, warm water rises in cold water, helium rises in air etc. It is all to do with density and nothing else. Conclusion: Using the evident containment of the Earth's atmosphere, there would have to be an external container to prevent it escaping into the vacuum of space. The fact that I may not be able to explain what this container could be does invalidate the argument. This being the case it brings into question everything we have been told about what is outside of the Earth i.e. space and all the astrophysical theories expounded by it. This could be opening a 'can of worms'!
