DNA Exposed the Killer After 48 Years | 1968 Cold Case Solved

Video Overview & Insights

A 22-year-old woman left home to buy a hairdryer on a quiet Sunday afternoon… and never came back. For 48 years, her family lived with one terrifying question: who followed her out of that store? Detectives chased the wrong suspects for decades — until DNA finally exposed a violent serial predator hiding in plain sight. This is one of California’s most haunting cold cases.

The victim: Wendy Jo Halison, age 22

The date: 1968, Los Angeles

The suspect: Edwin Dean Richardson

DNA linked Richardson to the case in 2016, but by that time he had already died in a prison in Ohio.

If this case shocked you, hit like and subscribe — because some of the darkest true crime stories are the ones that stayed unsolved for decades.

You would think Police would, as a priority, check any paroles released to see if they were in the Area; involving checking with his Mother etc! Yes, it takes resources, but breaking it all down to smaller manageable parts, would have achieved the same result after 44 years!

— @richardkras1109

And tell me in the comments… do you think Edwin Dean Richardson had many more victims that were never connected to him?

.......

This is a wonderful but sad story. All the testing that was done was somewhat fulfilling but all those tests do not supply you with the motive. Did I miss that part ? They neglected to mention if she was sexually assaulted which most likely was the motive.
Thank you for this.
I quite enjoyed it.

Women did not use handheld hairdryers, until the 1970s. I wonder if the murderer had given the hairdryer to his mother, or had returned it back to the store for cash?

I was born in 1969. When I was a kid I used to think about the moment, far into the future, when crimes would be solved by methods still unimaginable; criminals' impressions on objects, no one could picture what that would be. Now at almost 60 I am witnessing that, a bittersweet feeling pervading through though; the method is there, but it's not immediate or easy to trace. As a person who has lost family to crime, this strikes a chord.

He may have killed many. His pattern was truly sick.

@cadwalch

What’s up with the math skills here ? He was 70 in 2006 . So he was born in 1946. In 1968, he was 22. And had just served an 8 yr sentence for armed robbery ? When he was 14 ? And that folks is AI for you. When you get channels like this , that stretch 5 minutes of content into 26 with AI facts, it’s sure disappointing…..

I know the business about "we have to wait 24 hours before we investigate a missing person. They may show up before time's up. They're an adult, they can walk away if they want to." I read too many cases where people go completely against a reliable pattern of turning up on time or sooner, and then all of a sudden don't. It's a shame how many criminals die before they're proven to be guilty by DNA. Fascinating story, thanks for posting.

Often I wonder how many of these innocent sweet old people have done crimes and have never been caught. Where I live there is a wooded area where a lot of murdered women have been found and as today the murder has never been caught. I wonder where this person is walking around at.

Yes. The criminal had many more victims. Cold cases should never be shelved, until closed. I hope that monster had a horrible period of imprisonment and the longest, most suffering demise of anyone in the history of mankind.

I would gladly act as executioner for these pieces of sh-t as a volunteer. I hope the cons got to him in jail. In the shower. Daily. The death penalty must be applied for all murders and appeals must be limited.
