Disney Artist Teaches Animation - How to Flip Paper + "Inbetween"
Video Overview & Insights
In this video I take you through my paper flipping method in order to create an "inbetween" drawing within my animation. Watch as I teach you the basics of how to do animation on paper.
I'm not sure how active you are in the comments of older videos. I've been a professional digital animator for over 15 years now, but I've literally never done paper animation.
In the past month I've decided to go back, and seek as much knowledge on this process as possible. If you wouldn't mind sharing your experience with my questions I'd greatly appreciate the insight.
Aside from an admiration for the expression of traditional animation, I'm enjoying the unplugged nature of it. I'm considering doing paper storyboarding to help immerse myself during new project's development.
I'm here because I felt i was terrible at flipping (I am, but that's besides the point lol). I noticed when I was on a drawing for any significant amount of time, my flipping would wear on the paper a lot. At 3:08 in your video, I see somthing very familiar. The little veins on the paper.
Are those defects just a part of the craft? Am I doing anything wrong when those occur?
Is there a brand of animation paper you recommend? preferably somthing i can get shipped. Im also comfortable operating any equipment for cutting my own if you know if anything like that. I got some from amazon, and i'm not really impressed with the hole punch quality.
if you are able to respond I would appreciate it greatly, regardless I appreciate the knowledge in your videos and am looking forward to extracting everything i can from them. :)

I was told many years ago by Warner Bros. animator Virgil Ross that top pegging drawings was primarily started by the New York animators back in the day as opposed to how the California animators were working. He didn’t see any advantage to it either and preferred to flip his drawings bottom pegged. I’m so grateful for the training I had 40 years ago. Computers are great but there really is something magical about drawing on paper. Thank you for this wonderful video.

This was such an art. Don’t get me wrong animation on computer is still amazing but nothing can beat the hand drawing animation.

As an amateur animator myself, Why not place the inbetween frame in between two key drawings? wouldn't it be easier to see the movement🤔
About Aaron Blaise:
============================
at what level of muscle memory you need to achieve for this kind of drawing skills.
Aaron Blaise is an animation feature film director and wildlife artist.
For 21 years Aaron worked with Disney helping to create some of the greatest animated films ever made. During that time he worked as an animator or supervising animator on "The Rescuers Down Under", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "Mulan" and more.
This seems impossible.
In 2003 he was co-director of "Brother Bear" for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.
After "Brother Bear" he helped to develop several projects but ultimately left Disney to pursue an opportunity back home in Florida. Aaron recently served as 2D Animation Supervisor and Character Designer for the "The Bear and the Hare" an advertisement loved by millions around the world. (https://vimeo.com/78740926)

@samaswan098Thank you so much for this ! as I child I always wondered how this was done, I was so fascinated by the notion of Flip Paper Movement and would try to do mini stick figure animations without much success... who knows, maybe I'll give it another shot ! 😍
@bearifiablepau2095Me pone ansioso como mueve los papeles con velociodad para ver lo mismo, esta gastando mas energia en eso que en dibujar jaja pero supongo que le funciona
@kaqtie_1126The amount of drawings it must take to make an enitre film is hard to comprehend..

@MindofgazHow was this formed into a movie though?
@Austin_3166I have a dream and a new goal. It will be long and hard, but I want to create Disney style 2D cartoons with amazing fairy tale stories, like the ones in my childhood. Not the trash they try to force us now. Thank you for inspiring me

@foxint3362I absolutely wish digital animation never existed
@mrungratefulSpending 20 minutes for a scene of 1 - 2 seconds. Surely the producer would consider AI generated to be much more efficient, faster and cheaper..

@dimplez1ishNo machine could ever replace this typa essence
@NilezzcoleIt’s so sad how we don’t animate like this anymore
@TheRealMrlaughterThis is sooo cool!!! <3
@julia264-r5zI feel like traditional animations needs to be brought back, or at least just 2D. The amount of effort that goes into it is unmatched.
@voullynx33عمل رائع أحسنت
@علي.المحمداوي-س7شYes! Why? Because the Old school way is the best way to draw and teach animation!

@NathanLavender-n8gIn this world of digital dick-traitor $hip ❤and thief like fARTificial grey matter 😂creations based on stolen works HUMANS should support each other and human creations and creativity, otherwise we are doomed, this deeply ordered chaos will bring a new order 😅 based on exceptionalism and many other "ism"s ,in a subversive and destructive maner,good to see people breaking apart from the degeneracy and getting suport for sharing hes lifetime experience and knowledge. 😊
