I'd take the 240k remote job. The conditions don't mean anything. You are either worth 240k or you are not. The job paying less is valuing your time less. Maybe that's what you want, but the key thing here is your time. Not where you spend it.

The office is basically empty, and my project deadline is due today. Come spend a not-so-normal workday with me. Pushing to finish a data pipeline before the new year, walking you through how code reviews actually work at Amazon, and finding my new favorite hiding spot on the 20th floor. I also get honest with you at the end about something I've been stuck on: is it worth trading work-life balance for work that actually feels meaningful? I don't have the answer. Let me know what you'd choose. š»
Could you tell me one thingāhow did you apply for jobs? Please don't give me the same content that everyone else shares on YouTube.

I'd take the 240k for sure. If the commute is to long, probably best is to move closer. Also the commute with those views you have is absolutely worth it! I should visit Vancouver some day!
0:45 What on-call work actually means
1:44 Layoffs
I hate office environments. I haven't spent longer than 4-6 hours a week in one in the last 6 years. Id 100% take $240k to be in person, that would pay off debt SO MUCH faster, I could invest and save more. Even a single year would be life changing.

I love your videos š„° Iām watching them to study English š„¹

240k in person is no brainer, maybe 200-230k remote is also similar but 240k is like working 2x remote

I'd rather work the remote job. I've been working remote as an SWE for years and my work/life balance drastically improved. We have a lot of traffic on the LA freeway, so it would always take almost 2 hours everyday if I were to come into the office hypothetically. I can even go to the gym and do laundry whenever I want. remote life rocks lol

Iād take a $150k remote job and work from somewhere cheap. The catch is: remote usually ends up having office requirements after a few years.
Code written by LLMs is rubbish. I canāt wait for it to hit home in a few years. We just need a few managers to get scared and lose their jobs because projects have died due to the low quality of LLM code.
sooo close to 100,000!!!!!
this is a dream come true!!!!!!
In person job
More User Perspectives
At your office, which of the AI coding assistants is used the most?
@kevinr84312:43 it is a memorization game... kind of sad... but then, some people say, it is just used an excuse to not hire people who are 35 or 40 or above. The companies do hire people who are 50 or 55, but only because they need somebody who are proficient in some tools, like Hadoop or Redis and they have been interviewing for 2 months and can't find anybody
@winterheat1:16 typical Seattle weather
@kjhaha11I think Vancouver is such a pretty city, I have a lot of friends who moved there or they live close by to Seattle. While working at Amazon do they ever make you go over to any Seattle offices or have you crossed over while working there. Just more curious since it's really close by? Thank you for the vlogs! Really enjoy seeing from your perspective as I also prospect in the tech world.
@BigRay826sameeee here!! i would choose the 240k option, because even though I prefer to stay inside, I also like meeting new people and sharing experiences with them, keep going Sarah love to see your vidsš
@vivimelissa3086Aspiring AI enginerr hoping to land a job in canada. the hardest part for me so far was finding a company that sponsors visas. hopefully one day itll work out
@Banana-JoanneA day on the life of an Amazon employee: find a new job all day
@LexGonSepI think the safest jobs are when you work for the Government.
@luis.journeyI would choose the 120k remote option. I live in the South West of England in a National Park. We have dogs, cats, horses you name it. Working in a sterile office under artificial light would make me miserable. As someone that enjoys their own company I don't miss working surrounded by people, but on days that I crave seeing fellow humans I can just pop into a workspace and see people without the politics of working at the same place. If anything it's more genuine interaction, because it's an actual opportunity to meet some new people and learn about them, or to catch up with people I don't see on a daily basis.
The thing that I really love about being remote is that I can be completely present for work during working hours, but my whole day isn't centred around it. I can have other things going on and get a better sense of balance.
I did like working with people in the office as a younger chap and I made some great friends doing that, but I'm just as close if not closer to my 100% remote colleagues now so š¤·āā
Each to their own! There's no wrong answer - that's the joy of these choices!

@user-kn1mx9yp7zI would pick a 200K hybrid job :P
@AvinashvabilisettyFWIW, Iād take the in-office job. Iāve worked in IT the last 5 years remotely and the 5 years prior was in person. The day-to-day gets very stale if you work remote and you donāt networking nearly as well (which is huge for career progression). Feels a lot better to space your home from your space for work, meet more people in the company in person, and if thereās a big pay difference, get that paper.
@XxXphantomregimeXxX"Great experience with Jobbyo! The platform is easy to use, offers quality job opportunities, and makes the job search process simple and efficient. Highly recommended!"
@alamin9353Hey I have about 5 months left in Bsc in COmputer Science and Iām an avid follower of the page. I have some questions Iād like to ask about the job. Can you share your LinkedIn so we can network please
@keysey20In Mexico, the average software developer's pay is one-tenth of that $120k figureāand that is for on-site work. Even so, I would still choose to be paid even lessāroughly 30% lessāto work remotely.
@hectornajerahozI would look to changing fields or upgrade yourself to some AI guru because they got a bunch of AI gents programming 24/7 now with objectives. Software engineering at the low to mid level is dead. More layoffs are coming.
@rodneyh1947That office view is lit
@sweaaronIt's good to 'wake up' to the corporate reality and also to realize as soon as possible that 'promotions' are rarely worth the extra money for stress, 24/7 concerns etc. Use the jaded feeling to settle into the part of IT/Software you enjoy doing and then you win. I'm old, been there and I'm back to being a software developer again.
@Freedom.z.zAre you not worried about your current employer learning youāre job hunting by posting these videos? Iām curious. In my industry I would probably get fired if they knew I was looking for another job. ā¤
@Softfocus21120k is too much of a haircut even as an older person with a family. Get it closer to $180k or $210k and it would be harder to decide. Remote is too much in demand so the wages are going to be way worse for the same type of work.
@flashoflight8160I left a comment on your last video - not sure if you saw it. If you have any interest in applying to OpenAI let me know and Iād be happy to refer you. The only downside of that youād likely have to move either Seattle or San Francisco - we donāt have an office in Canada yet.
@cljl07Honestly, I donāt even know what brought me here, lol. Iām a neuroscientist who loves his field & it doesnāt have much to do with software engineering, but you make incredible content and I love watching your videos. You bring joy and sophistication to a complicated field like my own. Iām so sorry you havenāt been able to achieve stability but Iām always cheering for you in your corner! Wishing you all the best!
@kalch3431i really like and appreciate your videos where are you from miss
@rowel554Why did they switch you to on call
@ernestopadilla5382240k in person...depending on the city where I'd be in person
@bstives58180k hybrid š
Also interviewing and prepping for interviews is a full time job in and of itself - so you're basically doing two jobs if you're trying to interview prep.
I completely understand feeling jaded, as a Product Designer there's always this shake up of layoffs and can AI do/replace. I just want stability and somewhere to grow long term that cares about the contributions that I make. Feels like a lofty dream in itself though
@hndsmdvlYes my beautiful crush has posted! <3
@Unknowndude938This is exactly how I remember feeling, i was at Amazon during the first round of layoffs and the RTO nonsense. I remember completely losing all motivation and just being kinda disenfranchised with tech. I felt like FAANG was my dream and i was there but it kinda sucked. I ended up leaving at 3 years and it was the best decision i ever made. Im at a company now that i love
@ggggggggyt120k
@Freedom.z.zI will take 250k job in person
@ebony3063well, for me, i had the answer ready to your question in a sec. work from office. i cherish and love the company of people i get everywhere. i feel like it helps us get more diverse experiences, intellect as well as fun things. i love when i find like-minded people and people who MAKE me want to jump higher and higher. i have a feeling if i had a collegue like you, it would've been really fun! i would've been extrovert to your introvert, and hehe, i am going through the same situation, just on a different levl, so never feel alone! <33
@tish-aaaI like your vlog and it is something different from other "Day in my Life" Vlogs
