I guarantee that if Crockett had an M1903 Springfield rifle from WW2, then he’d easily turn Santa Anna’s head into a canoe because the 30.06 round is the most aerodynamic round in all of US firearms. Hell, even Sergeant Alvin York of the 82nd division of WW1 could’ve easily killed Santa Anna with a M1903 Springfield rifle.

There's a lot of scenes cut from this film. I have a behind-the-scene book. In it was the original script. The young soldier @0:24 next to the sergeant, he was a conscript, taken by Mexican cavalry during the march north. In this scene, he had dialog with Santa Anna. The boy says his grandfather was killed. Santa Anna suggests he was killed by the Anglos, and points to the Alamo. The boy boldly states, he was killed by Santa Anna when he served the Spanish. The battery falls into a tense silence. Santa Anna just smiles, "We're all Mexicans now." Then he yells to move the battery forward.

During the retreat to Peggy Lake, the conscript comes face to face with another character named Matthew, who has a bit part as the boy pushing a broom in a store where Travis is ordering his uniform. Matthew had a bigger part. After the Alamo fell, he tries to join Houston's army, but is refused, saying he was too young. Matthew still joins. Both he and the conscript end up shooting and killing each other.

i read in james micheners texas that muskets were inaccurate and that their real effectivness were in volleys at about 60 to a 100 yards max.the kentucky rifle and other rifled long guns were accurate to two even 300 yards.however they were very slow to load needing to be wrapped in a patch and forced down the barrel to grip the rifling.they also lost a lot of the charges effectivness as gas escaped due to the ball shape of the projectile.come the 1845 colts walker in .44 which was the most powerful handgun ever made until the 1930s and troops were amazed how far their bullets carried.using a shoulder stock and pointed rounds michener said they shot much further than any other smallarm on the battlefield.stray bullets were hitting at a 1000 yards.they were effective if fired carefully at 250yards with a minimum of training.never intended obviously as a long range weapon it shows how powerful the walker was .the minie ball in the 1850s then changed warfare.again a pointed shaped bullet it could be dropped down the barrel of a rifle quickly.however its soft lead base expanded when fired sealing the barrel and gripping the rifling.it used the entire powder charge.it also cleaned out powder residue from previous shots.enemies could now be engaged at a thousand yards.a tremendous distance.however more likely was firing at 400 or 500 yards as accuracey was better.
