David Coulthard On Finding The Best Seat In F1 | F1 Beyond The Grid Podcast: Legends

Video Overview & Insights

The Formula 1 driver market is potentially just one domino away from exploding into a frenzy, so what exactly does an F1 driver need to do to get themselves into the best seat on the grid?

35:37 โ€œgraziaโ€ was the most recent achievement ๐Ÿ‘

โ€” @Erik-ph

With multiple wins, poles and podiums throughout his 15 seasons at the pinnacle of motorsport, David Coulthard was often fighting at the front. But how did he make his way into the fastest cars?

Speaking to Tom Clarkson, David shares some of the remarkable tales from that journey โ€“ including his careful approach to getting a drive at Williams after the death of Ayrton Senna and why a โ€˜totally unnecessaryโ€™ contract dispute resulted in him leaving them for McLaren.

DC, I'm pretty sure Goatifi could out perform Lance at Aston....

โ€” @jrother

DC emphasises the importance of dealing with people, pressure and politics in navigating his way to the front of the grid. He reflects on how he negotiated with big team bosses like Ron Dennis, why he tried to use the media to his advantage and how surviving a plane crash changed his approach to life in F1.

I am so tired of old Brits telling us how F1 should be, especially those that can't compare to the best of the sport.

DC is such a unique special character.
Great chat.

I think Coulthard doesn't get enough credit for his time at Red Bull. All that experience from front running cars, crews and management at Williams and McLaren that he took there must have been crucial in the early years, even if he was never quite on the level of Hakkinen or Schumacher in ultimate performance. Seems to be one of the smarter, more grounded drivers, and probably easy to work with.

What a great chat with 'Blockhead'! For a future guest, could you get Nigel Stepney on the podcast?

The only silly comment was about Keke Rosberg , who DC obcviiously never liked because he has made that same petty comment before. Keke won the 1982 Championship with 4th or 5th fastest car on the grid against utterly superior turbo Brabham, Ferrari and Renault. Arguably even McLaren was superior that year. Keke's Cosworth Williams was literally 3 seconds slower in the old Hockenheim and according to old Derek Daly interview they had 150-200 hp deficit in qualifying trim..

In 1985 Keke totally demolished Mansell. Sure both had 2 wins that year but Keke he had five 1st place tech. DNF's in 1985. How can you underplay so badly what Rosberg did in 1982 with such an inferior car? It's pretty much the same as if someone won the title with the Alpine today. Sure it was also much about Turbos unreliability but none of the drivers finished 11 races that year. Had Hollywood's movie darling Senna, or another British driver won the title with that car, they would still praise it every day now as a "legendary achievement". Are you only a worthy champion if you cruise to easy victories with a superior car as Mansell did in 1992, huh?

Never warmed to DC as a driver but he is the most genuine driver and a wonderful broadcaster. The way he conducts himself he deserved a year more in that Williams or a year without Mika.
