Dark Night of the Soul by Loreena McKennitt (with lyrics)
Video Overview & Insights
On the beautiful text of St. John of the Cross, Loreena made this sublime song.
Loreena McKennitt composed this track to explore the historical and spiritual connections among Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in 15th-century Spain. Based on a poem by the mystic Saint John of the Cross, the lyrics use the metaphor of a journey through the darkness of night to depict the crisis of identity and detachment from the material world required to find light and union with the divine.
The devotion of God translated in the devotion of art.
To all the ones making those beautiful pictures, but most to the craftsmen making such beautiful buildings, paintings and sculptures.
Musically, the song blends Celtic influences with Middle Eastern sounds, creating a hypnotic and meditative atmosphere through traditional and exotic instruments like the oud and the bodhrán drum.
Upon a darkened night
the flame of love was burning in my breast
❤❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹 ❤❤❤❤
And by a lantern bright
I fled my house while all in quiet rest
❤❤💞🌹💞🌹💞❤❤
Shrouded by the night
And by the secret stair I quickly fled
La belle prière de Saint Jean de la Croix divinement chanté par Loorena
The veil concealed my eyes
while all within lay quiet as the dead
Angelic!
Chorus:
Oh night thou was my guide
The voice reminds me of Esther Mikaelson ❤
of night more loving than the rising sun
Oh night that joined the lover
Absolute beauty and perfection. Loreena is a worldwide treasure.
to the beloved one
transforming each of them into the other
Breathtaking!!! Left speechless, without words!!! Thank you!!! 🙏❤️🌞💙✨💫🙏
Upon that misty night
in secrecy, beyond such mortal sight
Stunning
Without a guide or light
than that which burned so deeply in my heart
❤
That fire t'was led me on
and shone more bright than of the midday sun
Very beautiful 😍 and full of inspiration ❤️ divine love ❤️
To where he waited still
it was a place where no one else could come
Aww! The voice and the music that matches so perfectly to the depth and divine spirit with which our mystic saint St John of the Cross composed these supernatural poem! Am proud to be a Carmelite. Thanks! @ India.
(Chorus)
Within my pounding heart
Such a beautiful piece! Thank you for sharing.
which kept itself entirely for him
He fell into his sleep
This is the best and most moving translation and animation of the poem I've heard in the English language. Thank you dearly. I would like to know where the translation came from. I'm a theological teacher and missionary who has been working in John of the Cross for at least five to six years. This is truly remarkable: the voice, inflection and music has captivated the spirit of John's poetry, and it certainly resonates in harmony with his commentary. So precious.
beneath the cedars all my love I gave
From o'er the fortress walls
The beautiful woman
I kiss her hand
the wind would brush his hair against his brow
And with its smoothest hand
Wunderschön, klar, überwältigend
caressed my every sense it would allow
(Chorus)
What a beautiful song
I lost myself to him
and laid my face upon my lover's breast
Excelente Lorena, gracias.
And care and grief grew dim
as in the morning's mist became the light
Her voice is as clear as a call from my Creator!
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
there they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
QUE OS ANJOS DE LUZ FALEM POR MIM!
there they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
Music for the Soul..Every Songs so great..Thanks from Berlin🎉🎉🎉

@IsraelEspinoza-b2zTranslation of St John of the Cross's 'Dark Night of The Soul' by E Allison Peers
On a dark night
Kindled in love with yearnings-
Oh happy chance!
I went forth without without being observed
My house being now at rest.
In darkness and secure,
By the secret ladder disguised-
Oh happy chance!
In darkness and in concealment,
My house being now at rest.
In the happy night
In secret, when none saw me,
Nor I beheld aught,
Without light or guide,
Save that which burned in my heart.
This light guided me
More surely than the light of noonday
To the place where He (well I knew whom)
Was awaiting me-
A place where none appeared.
Oh night that guided me,
Oh night more lovely than the dawn,
Oh night that joined Beloved with lover,
Lover transformed in the Beloved!
Upon my flowery breast,
Kept wholly for Himself alone,
There He stayed sleeping, and I caressed Him,
And the fanning of the cedars made a breeze.
The breeze blew from the turret
As I parted His locks;
With His gentle hand He wounded my neck
Causing all of my senses to be suspended.
I remained lost in oblivion;
My face I reclined on the Beloved.
All ceased and I abandoned myself,
leaving my cares forgotten among the lillies.
FABULOSO
@MIGSILSANI have a different impression on this most enchanting melody despite its Christian references. To me, it envelops the Feminine and Masculine Archetype of the Twin Flame where two past lovers confined to their individual , spiritual paths of enhanced awakening and a transcendent transformation of their spirit essence, FINALLY come together in full union, thus the lyric, " Transforming each of them into the other." The bond is of a cosmic declaration and is eternal and cannot ever be broken, thus assuring their LOVE forever.
