CURSE of the Best New Artist Grammy (1995-1999)
Video Overview & Insights
On this episode we'll be cover the infamous CURSE of the Best New Artist Grammy. Many claim that artists who win Best New Artist at the Grammys are cursed to failure throughout the rest of their career. Is it true?

In your next video on the Curse of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar (2000-2005), I will expect at least ONE Paul Hargis entry, and I know which one will most likely to appear.

I'm happy to hear more!
In this episode we tackle 1995 -1999 and close out the last half of the 90's.

Hole, Shakira, Björk , Spice Girls, Liz Phair and The Cranberries got all snubbed 😢😢😢😢😢
1995 - 1:52
1996 - 16:26
"Wow, i had no idea SWV had this many fans!" 😡😒🤦🏽
1997 - 31:28
1998 - 45:16
I worked at a mall record store in East Tennessee when Andrea Bochelli's Aria dropped. Even there, that CD sold like HOTCAKES. If you're shocked to see his name on the BNA list for 1999, you were not even remotely adjacent to the industry. Garden variety pop music fans who were still children are not going to understand how intensely popular that record was because he wasn't getting MTV or radio airplay. I'm actually surprised in retrospect that Lauryn Hill won over him.

Of the 54 acts who have won the award since its inception, 26 are solo female artists, 18 are duos or groups, and 12 are solo male artists. Of the solo male artists, half were given the award in its first decade; since 1970, only six solo male artists have won the award, the most recent being Chance the Rapper in 2017. From 1997 to 2003, and again from 2018 to 2023, all the winners were solo female artists. Only five artists have won both Best New Artist and Album of the Year in the same year: Bob Newhart in 1961, Christopher Cross in 1981, Lauryn Hill in 1999, Norah Jones in 2003, and Billie Eilish in 2020. Of these, Cross, Jones, and Eilish had songs winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the same year, with Cross as the sole songwriter, Eilish as co-writer, and Jones lacking songwriting credit, which therefore made her miss out on completing the single year big four Grammy achievement, a feat that only Cross and Eilish attained; while Adele was the only artist to win all General field Grammys from separate occasions. Only two artists have lost Best New Artist yet won Album of the Year in the same year: Vaughn Meader in 1963 and Alanis Morissette in 1996.
Please do the 80’s would love to see your outcome 🎼🎉
Of all the winners, only three have been country artists.
David Crosby and Carl Palmer hold the distinction of being the only artists to be nominated twice for this award. Palmer was nominated both times as a member of a supergroup: Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Asia, while Crosby was nominated as a member of The Byrds and won as a member of the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash.

lol you don’t have a grunge
(Yes I know you meant grudge I just found it funny)
1984 marked the first time that all of the nominees were from outside the United States (winner Culture Club, Eurythmics, Musical Youth, and Big Country were from the United Kingdom, and Men Without Hats were from Canada).[14]
Eight artists who have been nominated for Best New Artist and have been later awarded with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award: The Beatles (1965, 2014), Chicago (1970, 2020), Cream (1969, 2006), Jefferson Airplane (1968, 2016), Antônio Carlos Jobim (1965, 2012), Led Zeppelin, (1970, 2005), Leontyne Price (1961, 1989), and John Prine (1972, 2020).
dude can talk 👏
Process
From 1995 to 2021, members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences nominated their choices for the best new artist. A list of the top twenty artists was given to the Nominations Review Committee, a specially selected group of anonymous members, who initially selected the top five artists to gain a nomination in the category in a special ballot; the number of nominated artists was increased to eight in 2018.[15][16] The rest of the members then vote on a winner from the final nominees.[17] In 2021, it was announced that the Nomination Review Committees would be disbanded, and the final nominees for best new artist would be decided by votes from members.[18] Starting in 2022, the number of nominees in the category increased to 10.[19]
54:55 Speaking of safe picks that won Best New Artist… I will say their first two albums are pretty great!!
That’ll be fun for you to talk about when you get to 2005!!

Anytime I find bodyguard soundtrack on CD I buy it it’s like my catcher in the rye
@arzabaelEh, Sheryl was also dating Lance Armstrong.... eh.... Also, she just got inducted to the R&RHOF, so yeah, people have been talking about her.
@DavidBarufficalling diddy gangsta rap is an insane take.
@joshooah86I love this series, but the pedantic part of me has to point out that Best New Artist is just that: about the artist. Their first/most recent record is not the nominee, they themselves are. Thank you for reading my obnoxious quibble.
@terra__incognitaThe first time I ever heard or seen Linkin Park was on MTV as I was getting ready to go to high school my junior year. The first time I heard Hybrid Theory from the beginning to end was after school while going on a “country cruise” with my friends. Hybrid Theory is the pinnacle of Nu-metal and should be held up on a pedestal along with all of the other genre-defining albums, while Linkin Park still to this day is the only band to successfully mix rap and metal together in a perfect blend. Obviously they ended up going in an entirely different direction starting with their follow-up to HT but besides that one Mr. Han track Hybrid Theory is a no-skips album and absolutely perfect. It sucked they had to snub LP but they did right by giving the Grammy to Evanescence because Amy Lee sang her heart and soul out for the world to see while 50 Cent was singing about lap dances and getting shot a billion times.
@josamarooenglish music is popular inaustria and germany
@mike04574As a black millennial I tried watching two of this guys videos and I don’t think you should talk about music if you don’t have some working knowledge of anything other than white rock music.
@Ty-raehow did you not mention JAY Z in 1997
@fartemisIt's not that punk was lacking in direction in the '80s. The beautiful thing about punk in the '80s and '90s is that it offered all kinds of possible approaches and directions. In the '80s you had Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Minutemen, Saccharine Trust, Mission of Burma, Kitchens of Distinction, Scratch Acid, Squirrel Bait, Bad Religion, Fugazi, all hinting at new paths to be explored, leading into the '90s, where some of my favorite punk bands (Braid, Texas is the Reason, Jawbox, Jawbreaker, ATDI, Superchunk, Snapcase, I Hate Myself, Manic Street Preachers to name a few) would put out some terrific records.
@ForeverGotShorterI was watching the Alanis part of this video when all of a sudden she popped up on the tv to do the national anthems for game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final
@brockbishop4006I don't understand this narrative that Hootie and the Blowfish is bad. It stopped being cool to base your personality on what you don't like in 1999. Let Her Cry has more emotion than any whiny mumbly grunge song about heroin and being a teenager. Literally every grunge song is about heroin or being a teenager, how relatable.
@mariahanover9335I keep hoping Lauryn Hill will have her D’Angelo moment. After quite a number of years, she just drops an album out of nowhere that fully measures up to her past glory.
@movieatorfilmsI’d absolutely love to see a continuation in the 80s or 2000s. These were some of the best videos you’ve put out in like 5 years.
@uhno1939that bit about you getting PISSED because Diddy got the nod for BNA has aged like fine wine all things considered
@AdrianBelmonte962Pac not winning no Grammy for 1995’s Me Against the World and 1996’s All Eyes on Me was criminal af, he was too prolific not to get at least one Grammy? Naw
@The1987KidIt was here where I found out HIM was Finnish….damn.
@ASLB247If Papa Roach won the best new artist Grammy in 2001 they would be one of the sucsess stories, they definitely had a better lasting chart sucsess than Shelby Lynne
@mrflipperinvader7922I still say the early 90s was pretty much 1990-1991 with 1992-1995 being the mid 90s (or the real meat of it iyw), and the late 90s being 1996-1999... when all the little Pokemon kids of that era started hijacking the decade for themselves from the real 90s generation, born in 1970-198,2 as we see in the 2010s.
I know this cuz I saw it all, they saw 3% of it and claimed it was theirs only.
My choices for the New Artist Grammy.
1995: Weezer's self-titled (a.k.a. The Blue album)
1996: Faith Evans's Faith
1997: Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt
1998: Yellowcard's Midget Tossing
1999: Only one I agree with, but a good second option if you want a longer lasting artist is DMX's It's Dark and Hell is Hot.
“Mom Jeans” is genuinely in my top ten favourite genres and I will forever thank you for giving it a name
@spiderfemmeHow did Alanis not win best new artist ?
@phillinsogoodCan't wait for your retrospective on the 80s, 2000s and 2010s, this was super fun, hope you plan to do more!
@ThatOneGuy7550I saw Shania Twain in concert a few weeks ago and that woman still rocks hard even though she’s almost 60! Honestly I think her or Alanis would have both been way better picks than Hootie.
@tegan_paige59:14 Glad to see Fuel here! Their first three albums with the proper lineup are great <3
@ThierryRocksTVI sure hope once you return from your break, that this will continue :D
@kekoract2117:34 this thankfully aged poorly this year got crazy near the end. It definitely started slow but things picked up
@ringer1334Seeing Tupac on stage with Kiss giving a Grammy to Hootie & The Blowfish makes me feel like I just licked a frog.
@MrFutago87Yes, Crash, please cover the other decades for Best New Artists @ the Grammy Awards, and please not only the 1980’s, 2000’s, & 2010’s, go back to the first decade of the awards, the 1960’s, I’d love to hear your take on not
only The Beatles winning that one very memorable year (even if I was less then 1 years old, & those not even born), but also that year comedian Bob Newhart won as Best New Artist, but also please cover the 1970’s, when I was both a child and a teen (especially those last 3 Disco heavy years of that decade). Thanks.
Excuse me, but Woman in Me had some bops on it. Any Man of Mine, Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under, I’m Outta Here, You Win My Love, and No One Needs to Know are all awesome songs! Also, I know it’s a technicality, but The Woman in Me is her sophomore album, her first album, Shania Twain, also had a few good songs too like What Made You Say That and Dance With the One That Brought You.
@tegan_paige34:45 I know Leanna Rimes mainly from her pop hit off Coyote Ugly, Can’t Fight the Moonlight, and that came out around 2000.
@tegan_paigeHis Infernal Majesty ❤❤❤❤❤❤
@gokusondbzI’d love to see a follow up about the 00s, MCR was robbed of a Best New Artist nomination
@emilyhogan4973... I never heard of SWV either, and I was in the music business in the early 90s.
