As an American we have a serious issue with domestic violence. The number of women who should still be alive if the police and system locked up the violent offenders has to be astronomical. Domestic abusers only get real consequences when they kill their spouse and that has to change.

Hi: I'm Canadian. To what degree is verbal self-defence taught in the UK? What if you could reduce an offender's image & make it funny, perhaps by using the oblique approach, & for example, engaging in an online spoof or "flame war" that targets the offender? If I felt victimized by someone, I might try to "fight fire with fire" intellectually, perhaps by drawing a cartoon-portrait of him/her, posting it online & letting him/her know what I'd done. When Miss Bernal was on the bus & Mr. Pech approached her, she could have been carrying a light-up clown-nose to put on, for such an occasion. She could have asked him to put it on & taken a photo of him, perhaps while he had a fake rose in his mouth. There's certainly more along the lines of restrained "street theatre" anyone can carry out, according to taste. These days you require a more animated approach to get your point across.
