Could your summer holiday be in peril due to a jet fuel crisis?

Video Overview & Insights

Could your summer holiday be in peril? That’s a concern shared by many travellers this weekend, after reports that the UK is more exposed to a shortage of jet fuel than anywhere else in Europe.

Travelling soon? Avoid expensive roaming fees. Get 15% off a Saily eSIM and stay connected wherever you go. Use code INDY15 https://saily.com/indy15

— @theindependent

Earlier this week, the prime minister even suggested people may have to change “where they go on holiday”. Yet Britain’s airlines continue to insist they are not seeing any shortages. And demand for fuel is diminishing – partly because Gulf-based airlines are flying significantly less, but also because the high price of aviation fuel is leading carriers to cancel flights tactically.

So what is the prospective holidaymaker to make of it all? Simon Calder, travel correspondent of The Independent, has multiple flight bookings of his own for the coming months – and takes a look at what it all means.

Plenty of jet fuel, non stop aeroplanes spraying the skies everyday over my house.

Why doesn’t this guy just say don’t fly until next year or whenever the Iran v USA war is over! Probably because he’s paid by the tourist industry

Note, the lack of official comment/statement from the airlines on what they would do for their customers if flights were cancelled due to lack of fuel. So until the airlines state in writing what they will do, keep your money in your pockets or get comprehensive travel insurance. Governments cannot be trusted and the travel advisors will not reimburse you.

When jeff bezos got married, 177 private jets turned up to go to the location of the wedding. Think about that for a second

Just got back from Cyprus. No EES bullshit and no city tax. Won't be going to Europe anymore. Long haul costs a bit more but is cheaper when you get there. Boycott this European shite, it will cost you an arm and a leg

Stop selling flight for £25, because the people who have paid for their package holiday in advance, and booked overnight stays in airport hotels and hired private taxi on landing will lose the most. We're talking about families stranded at airports

You cannot continue to tell people to book flights as normal when you are seeing this level of disruption. Taking trains from Edinbourugh to London is not a minor disruption...

All part of Agenda 2030 which by the looks of it is bangh on track. 4 more years and all commercial flying as we know it will be a thing of the past if they get there evil way.

Never happen, look at the rubbish a few weeks ago saying fuel shortage, people are still driving the same, it's just expensive, like it went up 4 years ago when the Ukrainian war started, you never hear of it now, just another diversion to charge the common man extortionate pricing, we are struggling but starmer wants to send 78 BILLION in aid to Ukraine???? Unbelievable

You can't use trains between airports if you have a lot of luggage and aren't young enough to cart it around.
