Confronting Capitalism: Which Way Forward for the Left? ft. Krystal Ball

Video Overview & Insights

How effective has the Left’s political strategy been since the first Bernie Sanders campaign? And how has our relationship to the Democratic Party changed?

With a ruling class and fake democracy, who cares? Why should we care about the circus thats intended to divide and distract us? These parties are just grifts.

— @matthewmcdonald8892

On this special live episode of the Confronting Capitalism podcast, recorded at Littlefield in Brooklyn on April 6, Vivek Chibber and Melissa Naschek are joined by Krystal Ball and Matt Karp to discuss how class politics can convert popular anger into durable power and why rebuilding labor is the precondition for any serious democratic renewal.

Don't ask Matt Karp any more questions. He is a waste of oxygen. HE CAN'T FINISH A COHERENT SENTENCE, where he GETS TO THE POINT. It's all stammering, leading up to a weak and irrelevant conclusion. Net result: nothing. AND IT TAKES HIM FOUR HOURS TO GET THERE.

Matt Karp is TOTALLY USELESS to this conversation. First, he cannot complete a sentence. He stammers for 3 minutes without saying ANYTHING except "...um, er, y'know, like, um, ah, aside from what you were saying, um, er 'cause, y'know, it's...and another thing, er, um, er, y'know, like, if we could just backtrack, um, ah, ah, er..." He never EVER gets to the f*cking POINT. He's trying to say "the working class doesn't trust the Democrats because they feel disrespected and ignored by the Democrats." It took him FIVE F*CKING MINUTES to say that, through all the digressions and tangents and "um, er..."

The anger at wokism was the democratic party's reduction of it to only social justice issues from a Neoliberalism perspective. Our wokism was not what angered people on the right (except those who were indicted and exposed from it). Our problem is that there are too many people who are republicans that vote democrat---a perfect example are Zionists that vote democrat. Gaza is a dealbreaker, Free Speech is a dealbreaker. Economic and Climate justice are dealbreakers. We can't compromise on those issues. that they ask us to do. Elsewise, we must find our place in a third party.

You people need to realize 100k a year is working class. At 100k a year in NE you are most likely a renter. Not an owner

I get the sense that chinbur is mythologizing the non college educated white voter a bit. These people are not your allies. Welcome them in yes but they will be the last people to come over to your tent. They will ride or die for billionaires until they literally can’t afford to anymore and even then some of them will go down with the ship

@genreartwithjb5095
@

lol most college educated people are in the service sector - cuz they can’t get jobs in their fields 😂

@genreartwithjb5095

I will also note my wife is a molecular geneticist. On paper we are in the top 30 percent of earners as a household but the reality is even though we bring in over six figures or a little over that as a household we are barely - just barely able to qualify for a mortgage in a modestly priced area. We are DEFINITELY working class. I would say the middle and working classes have been squashed together over the years. And I have noticed the biggest guys whining about Capital Gains taxes aren’t people in my tax bracket. They are guys making 45 k a year so make that make sense

@genreartwithjb5095
@

Yeah this notion that white collar workers aren’t the primary allies of socialist projects is wrong headed and outdated as is the idea that white collar workers aren’t working class. More than ever they are part of the working class.

Marx talks about the lumpenprole actually being the capitalists biggest ally. And historically this stands up. Cops, military guys, non college educated rural folks have generally been some of the fiercest enemies of labor rights

This is a fantastic conversation. Three people who are trying to 1 up the others but each is staying slightly conservative in their answers. They aren't trying to break the other two. They are being the ass but allowing the other side to do their thing. 3 very close but still different views having combat.

They took shots at each other but only to demand better from the other. They never demanded a strawman. Not one a
Of the three demanded a strawman. They wanted actual responses.

How about look at leftism being successful in current times, every single one has nationalist tendencies, closed borders, and laws that favor citizens over immigrants but these gated community white guilt Karens aren't ready for that conversation

This poor child moderator is so lost and can barely speak. When she does speak it’s with the Narcissistic approach that what ever she is saying is the only correct opinion. This superior attitude is why we can’t build a bigger tent. Never learn any lessons.

Yow have lots of elephants in the room. The biggest one is your love affair with Zionist Bernie Sanders and AOC. Your favorite candidates are a non starter, no one cares if Zionism and genocide are on the table. Do better

get real politics:
public service manages the nation.
the electorate directs the public service with referendum.
the electorate controls the public service with citizen initiated legislation.
the electorate defends the nation with universal military service
it's called 'democracy.'

and there are no politicians.

36:40 What he's saying is, You can't just say you're going to make people's lives better, you actually have to do it if you win elections.
If you want those people to show up to vote for your party again.

Sounds so simple, but it's so hard for rich Dems for some reason.

@NickD-f2w

The Left doesn’t think they need to improve on anything … and frankly there is a stench to that kind of bombastic self-importance.

@ask_why000

I loved the dialog, but disagree with the idea we need to vote-blue-no-matter-who. Neither party changes after winning elections, they figure they won so they must have the winning message, obviously. Party's only change when they are forced to after losing elections. I refuse to vote for "the lesser of 2 evils". When more of us reject both "evils", we can clear the path for someone we actually believe in.

@chuckietownzer
@

There is an urgent need for a socialist party coming from the 50% of those who stay home on elections day, for they (we) don't feel represented. The candidates must come from grassroots, and directly accountable to the people. It must all begin in our communities.

When you have a disgusting immoral ridiculous amount of money, where anywhere within your unregulated untaxed unlawful business model you can, without even a second thought, close down or walk away from any part of that business because the workers decided to organize, then no matter what we the people do will have any impact on the Broligarchy and their plans for their future. Their wealth MUST be redistributed, their monopolies broken up, the regulations that were put in place post Great Depression reinstated (obviously in context of the modern era) The parts of the economy that every human being must have available to them to live, must be nationalized. Citizens United must be overturned. The Law and The Costitution must have meaning and must serve every citizen equally, no matter what class they come from. This must be part of these conversations we are currently having if we are to have a future in this farce of what was once a democracy. Convincing the upper middle class that they are NOT part of the 1 Percent must be included in these conversations. The difference between them and the .001 Percent is equal to the difference between an ant and an elephant. Once they realize that within the tiny circles of the multi-billionaire class, they have as much power or influence as the dishwasher at the local Starbucks, our fight will be so much easier to win.

1:00:25 That's my old friend from Nebraska! Osborn has come to realize that politics isn't working for regular Americans and decided to run back in 2024 against Deb Fischer but lost due to massive radio campaigns in rural Nebraska against him. He's fighting hard and has raised over $3 million through grassroots efforts. People should really consider supporting him. I have continued to support him even though I haven't lived in the state for several years now even though I'm a socialist. I met up with him and talked face-to-face back in October and we have WAY more in common than you think. He's extremely pro-labor. I wont speak for him but I encourage people to check out his movement.

Feminism is the tool of capitalists have used to destroy working class solidarity by pitting women vs men. Sadly the left has been completely fooled and has made feminism a central part of its identity politics. The left cannot succeed till it abandons the hate machine called feminism and works to build working class solidarity across genders. Just watch how most of the left is fully aligned with the woke ideology of the elites at Davos..

@vira1340

Such poor analysis of a movement for the left. There is no reforming the "Democratic" Party.

Watching this sheepdogging for the Dems is sickening.

*There's a major disconnect running through this talk: "The Dems are the only game in town, but they're not the answer". So that leaves two choices: 1. Power in some form outside the system. 2. Build a new party. (actually, there's a 3rd crappy option which is "burn it all down"). Yet none of you talk about the feasibility of a new party.

@presence5426

A panel of pseudo intellectuals who are in a building, using equipment, and wearing clothes, and then posting on a platform all created by capitalism. The ideology of envy is just ridiculous. None of these people have ever risked anything, built anything, and they sit there in the smarmy and sanctimonious cesspool daring to tell others how to live. Socialism has never worked and never will, these fools just want the benefits of capitalism handed to them by the power of the government, taking no risks. Lazy and incompetent is what they are.

Economic Policies
+ Organizing
= Unions

@garrensparks4492
@

We have to be the change we want to see. If we want Unions to grow. We have Unionize our work places. We need a focus on economic policies and we need to organize. Add campaign finance reform to help achieve more accessibility for Blue Collar representation and we got em. After that we just have to continue to deliver results.

American populism. Not left or right but both in balance. For example, we can be socialist but also be more Christian AT THE SAME TIME!! How? Try to follow Jesus's example, genuinely, and boom socialist conservative Christian. We can be fiscally responsible and fund healthcare, we just need real transparency in the finances to avoid 'elite' fraud.

We can find balance in all these things, we just need the will and to forgive each other, left and right. Like, MTG and Ilhan Omar.

Define working class. I think people who work for wages is a more palatable frame, particularly those who most reliably vote.
