I installed the brand new Commodore OS Vision V3.1 on an Atari VCS, and it turned out to be far more interesting than I expected. I had previously written it off as just Linux with Compiz turned on and a Commodore theme over the top, but after spending some time with it, there is clearly a lot more work here than I expected. From the C64-style boot menu and retro desktop effects to built-in Commodore 64, Plus/4 and Amiga emulation, Commoserve, BASIC tools, pixel art software and SID music creation, this is a genuinely impressive effort!

Loved my Vic 20 and Amiga 500 and 3000. Loved worker, very handy.

More User Perspectives
One thing the world could use is a light-weight, bloat-free web browser that runs in both Windows and Linux.
@Nebulous69:44 it does say to close the browser in the instructions
@Ryanmo97классная машина во всех смыслах
@ДмитрийСтрекалов-т7вInstalling this to a Proxmox VM right now.
@ChipLinckWith the compiz window animations turned off this would be pretty usable.
@schrodingerscat1863Interessant das Ding; hab ich gar nicht gewusst und das Atari 2600 PC Teil ist klasse....
@kleinerboeserdrache7804vabbeh cazzate tanto alla fine sempre finestre window si usano ma va a cagare
@lasthelp9I have one of the original c64x cases. They are very well made and have a decent mechanical keyboard using Cherry MX style clicky switches.
@PaulL-g5l2:14 sorry... Leo what? 😅
@ZiqohthI had an Atari ST. Loved it.
@speculativeauthorThis seems surprisingly well made! Nice video.
@DOSStormthis is the coolest thing ever
@Nikosaruninjaits a linux machine with the commodore logo on it. wheres the 4k dvd and bluray dvd backup. its good that they revived it. But its 2026 they need a modern tower case version with lots of usbs and nvme ssd. why not go intel chip too and steam capable
@CyborgHGWFThe french dubbing is so bad...wow !!!
@Miminou-c9gFor God's sake, give me a chance to adjust the volume before you start your yelling.
@billywild5440the wrong altman was taken
@remixedcatI just bought a new Framework 16. I wonder how this will work on that.
@dragonwood4562I'm propably not part of the demographic this is really made for, but I find that OS absolutely hideous. It looks so tacky and the animations look like they come from powerpoint
@luh034So it’s Linux. Yawn. 🥱
@frank2398Okay, if it's Debian under the hood, I assume apt is just connected to the Debian repositories in which case it should have full security updates and everything. If that's the case, I'm totally going to daily drive this.
@brentgoeller8257Shortly after this video,a few days actually,Updates to fix issues programs not opening was already underway and the update has fixed the issues!
@jamesmattson6813i feel the aura of that gui
@nejkajaryba1710I quite like the look of the animations! very 90s retro future cyberspace 🙂
very nice - I might give this a go!!
I am so close to down voting the video, simply because of him saying the download is 8 gigabytes. No, it's not. It's 9,9. Which is 10 gigabytes. Seriously, why is this so hard for YouTubers to get right?
@xPandamonHow did you get Amiga forever to install? All it wants to do for me is burn a CD…..
@SM-cg2dcI bought an SSD drive just for this. No regrets. Full enjoyment.
@tonystorckeFifteen years ago I spent a couple of years working for the Scottish government and I was probably the only person in the organisation running Linux with Compiz on the desktop. Never got bored of it.
@therealchriscunninghamima try this in a vm and make a video about it
@AstroBanana26I had a good laugh.
@alfredneumann4692I don't appreciate it. They killed the Amiga 30 years ago with greed and stupidity. I don't forgive them. Don't sell me nostalgia now, it's too late. Just release all the Amiga source code, workbench, hardware, everything under a libre license. It's far too late for us to do save it now but at least we can see what we lost and we can show our kids what they've killed. That memory doesn't belong to them anymore.
@jesaispas6402The video is so good on walking a new user through each step on setting up the software. I'm using this one a "free table" laptop that I just picked up at the VCF Southwest show and it's working amazing. Thank you - for taking the time and strait forward presentation. Keep up the great work.. New subscriber here....
@flycamDFWWhy promoting CommodoreUSA fake heritage? Its MINT and very old one?
@RasVojaJahmmm is that not compiz or beryl? did they steal that code?
@fabiogarofalo6685I worked at Commodore Computer in the early 80s in West Chester, PA. I didn’t know about Commodore USA. I might check out their latest OS.
@RicBillmanCommodore OS Vision is a custom MX Linux OS which is a distribution based on Debian. MX Linux isn't bad but has some issues such as it's mostly designed to be as lightweight as possible which means no preconfigured hardware enabled kernel so it'll be a little more complicated to install video drivers like Nvidia for example. Also MX Linux recently started using systemd when previously it used alternatives systemint to make it more streamlined. Also MATE hasn't started to move to Wayland which has been set as the new windowing system to replace X which is no longer developed and has security issues. I like Commodore OS Vision and it's a great novelty OS for retro emulation on more modern hardware but it would be nice if Commodore actually put a little more effort into making it into a daily driver OS not a novelty OS. It would require switching to a Wayland ready interface such as KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon (available at the end of 2026). I do hope this is a discussion happening at Commodore to really make this product more than a novelty product.
@welcometogmail5496They need to build it for ARM
@apollorobbthis is a cute os but the window close animation is horrible. oh my god
@sashakoshkaIf you look a bit around you can find the amiga roms for free on the internet 😉
@justethical280This looks like Ubuntu from 2005-2010 (Compiz, Docks, insane themes)
@media.player.legacyWow. This is following the exact route the other operating systems went. Introducing a GUI, but being able to 'drop' into the C64 console. I wonder if it is possible to run on a bare Linux kernel to get rid of the Debian bloat.
@danielboland527Great review and insight Dan 👍😎
