Clip | Communicating with the Gorn | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Video Overview & Insights
In this clip from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 3 episode, "Terrarium," when Lieutenant Ortegas crash lands on a deadly toxic moon, where the chances of survival are slim to none, she finds herself stranded and forced to challenge her most closely held beliefs in order to survive alongside a Gorn.
Melissa Navia deserves all the praise she’s receiving of course, but I think someone else who deserves praise is Warren Scherer, the stunt actor who plays this Gorn and every other adult Gorn in the show, and a personal friend of mine. He really brought the Gorn to life both figuratively and literally, all while wearing what is no doubt an uncomfortable heavy suit. Especially for this episode, well done, Warren.
In Season 3, when we reconnect with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, still under the command of Captain Pike, they face the conclusion of Season 2's harrowing encounter with the Gorn. But new life and civilizations await, including a villain that will test our characters' grit and resolve. An exciting twist on classic Star Trek, Season 3 takes characters both new and beloved to new heights, and dives into thrilling adventures of faith, duty, romance, comedy, and mystery, with varying genres never before seen on any other Star Trek.

Where is Frieren when you need her?
@bgcvetanSto gorn are best gorn
@Kr0nicDragonthis was my favourite episode of season 3,
@MRJOEWHARTONI was gutted they killed the Gorn at the end. Incredibly sad ending.
@kellypawsThe Gorn really don't look like that...
@mygafferIts always weird, when advanced race with telepathic abilities looks like silly frog which wont count to 3🤷🏻
@idontfckinknowKilling the Gorn character was a writing failure and a moral failure for SNW. The Metron callback to TOS episode ARENA was not worth inverting the SNW Federation's supposed principles by summarily executing a crash survivor solely because of her race and presence. The united states does enough of that with its police to nonwhite population. Kirk notably did not kill the Gorn in ARENA.
@souplike.homogenateDisagree! There is only one girl in this scene. She ain't human.
@dkoz8321Its Dark Crystal in ST:SNW. Hooray Jim Henson!
@dkoz8321I wish Ortegas would've asked the Metron, "Before you leave, can you bring my friend back to life for me?" The Metron might've blinked an eye in astonishment.

What is this
@matthewmcnerlin231Unwatchable.
Terrible. "F"
Kind of ridiculous that La’an could kill this innocent gorn in cold blood, clearly out of racism, and she doesn’t even lose her job. She’s like a racist cop in America.
@nathanbyrne24:)
@missouriboy2463Season 3 may have been my least favorite overall, but this is still easily one of my new favorite episodes of the series.
@TheAdorkableRJThis was a fantastic episode... until the shock value ending (Amin Maritza says Hi) and the hamfisted inclusion of a certain higher developed species, which I will not spoil for those who haven't seen it, yet. But the Puppetry, the atmosphere and the interaction between this Gorn and Erica was fantastic. More of that in Seasons 4 and 5, please! But leave the shock ending out.
@fgdj2000This is a rip-off from the Alien series, lmao 😂
@astronomicallyimpossible>All powerful beings
>Can't fix the ending
Bums.
Great episode. I have not enjoyed most of this series since halfway into season 1, but the Gorn episodes have all been well-written and performed. If the production team focused more on these conversational scenes and less on big set-pieces and movie-like episodes then it might help them return to form. The 24-episode seasons in TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager still prove better overall, so maybe Paramount+ should try it because quality and quantity are not exactly proving to be trade-offs. Ortegas is a great character.
@pwslatteryAmazing episode
@shahjehanLa'an killed a civilian in this episode and faced no consequences. This show is ridiculous. This series is pushing racist bio essentialism and trying to appeal to right wing Star Trek viewers unfortunately. Terrible
@ianh2950Federation isn't shoot first ask questions later. Absolute Slop.
@TechCarnivore1How far this series has fallen from its roots...
This looks like some third rate soap opera from india, starring a shexually neutral bland nobody who looks like a caricature of a human being.
What’s this , what happened to the gorn from TOS. This one looks like a creature from the labyrinth, just missing Mr Bowie and his tight pants . This ain’t Trek it’s Teen Adventures in space
@cpt.8757I needed more Gornie.
@tauIrrydahIt's a shame the Gorn Lady was shot. She didn't deserve that. 😭
@herrpeter13I really dislike these new gorn designs. they look like knockoff geckos mixed with gremlins.
@sirdaveysockrockerIt should be remembered that Laan had been deeply traumatized after her confrontations with the Gorns, who had killed and devoured her friends, she had witnessed the aftermath of a senseless massacre of a starship crew, completely aggressively attacked her and the starship she was on, and then discovered how animalistic they were, when she was in a Gorn ship.
She had only done what was completely natural, a dead Gorn meant safety for herself and her friends. She could not have known that this Gorn was completely the opposite of any she had personally experienced. For this she cannot be condemned, and must not be punished, but Ortegas needs to give her report on what happened, as the Gorns had so far been extremely murderous. For the Gorn behaved completely abnormally, why did she think Ortegas was not food? Or why had she chosen to spare and cooperate with a being that her fellow beings had early devoured without the slightest hesitation? The Gorn sacrificed each other for the sake of hunting, and younger Gorns killed each other to establish a hierarchy.
It would have been deeply interesting if the Gorn could have been saved so that a long list of questions could be answered, but the writers probably thought that would be too soon. TOS Gorns were highly intelligent predator-like beings who did not treat others with animalistic violence, even if they were murderous in their defense of their territories. But the flaw with the SNW Gorns is that they propagated in other intelligent beings as parasites - which in itself excluded them from all interaction with the rest of the galaxy. Then they had not only devoured non-gorns, but also developed technology to do the same. This pushes them far beyond the predator stage so that they become the devourers who cannot be tolerated.
So the Gorn in this episode is in very strong conflict with everything that is known so far about the Gorns in SNW. It's as if the adult Gorns are in different factions, or that these were nothing more than animal parasites when they were younger, until they suddenly changed character and became intelligent and social beings who could master advanced technology. This in itself is extremely contradictory.
So Laan just did what in the eyes of everyone except Ortega was right, the Gorns pose an unknown and extremely grave danger to everyone. She doesn't know. Nor does the entire galaxy that knew about the Gorns, Ortega was possibly the first to find a "friendly" Gorn. It wasn't Laan who killed the Gorn, it was her kind who had made sure that she couldn't survive the encounter with others who only saw her as a monster. She died because of the crimes of her people.
An excellent episode for Melissa as Erica. It reminded me a lot of Enemy Mine. 🖖🏻
@mikebasil4832Love it! Great episode, and great performance.
@IridescenceStudiosWhat cringe.
@Johnny_izKsYes, impressive. It would have been nice to see this level of craftsmanship in the original series. Even if they did have the budget (very low budget), the state of the art for this type of puppetry just was'nt there. :/
@rtwasThe producers of this show have got to stop hiring 10-year-olds for their writing department.
@vickdiscoKilling the Gorn wasn't fair. La'An Noonien-Singh shouldn't have fired. If I was Lt. Erica Ortegas I would said to Pike I don't trust her anymore or She goes or I go. I know if Pike fired La'An Noonien-Singh she would leave the series.
@jameslevy8347My favorite SNW episode! I wish they had not killed this gorn character.
@jacksemporiumofstuffThis really makes none of them recognizing the Gorn when Kirk is Captain make even less sense.
@douglastarbox7640I watched this and thought Enemy Mine with Dennis Quaid. Hated the ending! Whyyyyy.....
@Continuum888The end of the episode though 😭 disagree. disagree.. disagreeeee 😭
@CanadianFuturistStar Wars
@SreduOuk-bd5wpI haven’t seen this episode yet but I gotta say Gorn communicate with different species.
I thought the Gorn can’t be reason except that they get what they want.
To be honest, I thought are more animal. Like they hunt people for food or breeding. They attack colonies and establish territories like how animals expand their hunting/feeding ground. The only difference is they’re smart enough to use technology and fly spaceships.
I wish they had not killed her at the end. would have loved to see this play out in future episodes and a whole storyline develop.
@macrichardson7904Best episode so far.
@robertwhitford4723Looks like the Skeksis from Dark Crystal.
@oregonflatlandI just wish they'd stop pretending the new shows are somehow supposed to be in the same continuity as the old ones.
@BrejanThis was an excellent episode. Very well written.
