Jesus wants us to be happy & joyful but elsewhere & NOT at Mass. the SANCTUARY is just that! Sanctioned for a Reason! More kneeling in the presence of Jesus. No chatter before Mass either!

I (noncatholic) talked to a priest and afterward told a couple of friends it was a nonheakth issue and we all charismatics. He was so wise in his counsel to me and so excited about the Lord and telling me of a miracle that had just occurred and a very dire family member raised up after prayer...my friend had health issues and was interested. She went to his office later...he prayed for her and she was enveloped in this warm oil of the Holy Spirit in a powerful way and healed of an excruciating headache that day. ❀

""" So, I guess there's a distinction because no one can deny that,
Holy Spirit can use whatever He wants, however He wants,
to do whatever He wants, no one would ever deny that. """

So, there's what we have,.... and there's what we ought to have ,........." Maybe ".

Or,..Maybe NOT.
And. Maybe , no need to implement that from the, Top Down.
Or, Maybe, the person leading music in the small parishes,
who has, " given up from what they have to live on "" , has given to the Lord
more , than the larger parishes who have, "" given from their excess "".

I am autistic, I think in patterns and in my life journey have been in and out of following my faith. Ìn listening to your program I am encouraged to share some insights that keep popping in my mind as I listen. The importance of discernment found in scripture and the wisdom of the saints. Ķeep our eyes on Christ especially in the storm. Where to find Christ? In the Eucharist, In the Word, & in the Church (the people, especially the saints and their life lessons). This you both are doing in your lives. Be clearer in your teaching how this basic is the core supports in the journey. Our core challenge is trusting God by seeking Him through listening and noticing inner peace. Where there is fear, be aware that is Satan's deception to keep us from trusting God's love. The chaos in our lives is deception calling us to look to God’s love and help. Jesus as humanity lives this in His prayer life to gain consistent unity with the Father. The deceiver's role is to bring fearful self defence and self control over trust in God. I am pointing out patterns that create growth and success over stagnation in your stories shared. God is guiding in His timing. The Charismatic renewal Is a type of starting point similar to Pentecost for our times. It stirred up souls. Only God knows the plan. We get ideas and need to discern when or where God may want this to come to fruition. God's Timing not ours. Lives of saints full of having to stay true to authority even though the authority didn't recognise the gift. When God's time is present the obstacles disappear. I believe you both know what I share and seek in your lives. I hope this comes as a word of encouragement. The world is in chaos and God id turning all things to good.

I have a catholic background but had an experience/encounter with the Lord.. I became born again 5yrs. Now I'm really thinking charismatic catholic makes sense. The mass is good, charismatic too. So maybe something like every other Sunday different services can be held something like that.
Baptism, holy communion, reconciliation ,confirmation all of these make sense.

Sorry but the whole charasmatic movement post V2 is scary stuff. In my neck of the woods it's like a cult. Friends babbling with no idea what they say. It's all about feeling and Jesus loves me instead of taking up the cross. Fr going is not someone to give much listening to.

Interesting conversation!
I could sympathize a lot with what Fr. Goring was saying. I belong to a charismatic community called Emmanuel Community which is also deeply rooted in Catholic tradition. The 3 pillars of our community are: adoration, compassion, and evangelization. We have Paray-le-Monial, the sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, as our spiritual center.

I loved this podcast! I must say I feel an almost aversion to the traditional music, it just doesn’t move my soul to deep devotion as does praise music. I go to both types of daily mass types.

How blessed we are to have every type of mass from Trad to Charismatic.

People are different and the Catholic Church fits for all!

It saddens me this Father Mark Goring came to this interview in good faith because he felt guilty he had got a free mug, and was received by a host who was more interested in scoring points for what he perceived to be his team than in listenening with an open heart to a brother (a father!) in the faith. Like I don’t think he came to this podcast thinking that he would have to defend himself or the Charismatic renewal from another Catholic! I am sorry Matt - I really like you, I really do - but this condescending attitude of yours disclosing how superior your think traditionalist reverence is to someone else’s dance and tambourines and guitars when they praise God is draining, is boring and is petty and sad. It kind of reminds me of David’s wife ridiculizing him for dancing and singing to the Lord in gratitude. You might not listen to me but I’d say the church is bigger than you; it’s bigger than the traditionalist or the charismatic renewal - it is one and it’s rich and it’s beautiful to appreciate it in all of its richness and seek what unifies us - that we may be one like the son and the Father are one.

Beautiful point regarding loneliness and the celibate life. I really appreciated Matt's perspective on the Devil's whispering lie of how marriage could be the ultimate solution to our loneliness, struggles with lust etc. it opened my mind to the idea of another way the devil tries to attack the future family if that makes sense.

Attended mass at the Basilica Of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle in San Juan, TX and they had a mariachi band play for the liturgy. I typically am not a fan of guitars being used, but it was absolutely beautiful!! Can’t wait to go back!

I had to leave the CCR. I think it was mainly focused on the manifestations of the Holy Spirit (gifts and charisms), but not in real conversion. There was virtually no silence, recollection, contemplation and reverence. It was a superficial faith.

Besides, although the priest and the charismatic leaders of my dioceses knew I was struggling with demonic oppression and that I was in need of an exorcist, they didn’t help me at all.

paused at 58:01 What Fr. Goring is laying out is actually quite symbolic. Come in as imperfect but loving God in spirit with a modern hymn, then leave behind the common vernacular and humanity to come into the splendor of God through Gregorian chant. We've lost the liturgy, 1962 isn't far back enough. I say go back to the liturgy during Pope Leo XIII if we can. Our only good choice otherwise is to merge TLM and NO. Bad choices include but are not limited to doing nothing, choosing one, separating rites, and schism.

I’ve been personally helped by Jesus and Mother Mary—not in theory, not in imagination, but in real spiritual battles where I had nothing left but to cry out to Heaven. And they came.

If you’re struggling
if you’re drowning in fear, addiction, darkness, or demonic oppression—I’m telling you the truth:

Give your life to Jesus. Fully. No holding back. Cry it out. Surrender everything.

In my darkest moments—when I was spiritually surrounded and broken—I didn’t pray fancy prayers. I cried like a child, and Heaven answered me.

Jesus came.
Mary came.
The angels stood guard.
And the battle began to turn.

Heaven is real. Spiritual warfare is real. And most importantly—God’s mercy and power are real. You are never alone. You are never too far gone. But you must surrender—deeply, painfully, honestly.

If you’re ready to cry out and give Him everything

He’ll come.
He always does.

Hi Matt, I listen frequently to your podcast, and I really enjoy it. I come from a Pentecostal background, and I am in the process of becoming catholic. So, here what I want to say, I have nothing against the Holy Spirit moving as He likes, however, I have seen, during 3 decades of attending and be active in few Pentecostal churches, that many of them are abandoning prayer and idolizing what they call worship, that many time become a distraction from God and a tool of entrainment that has no reverence towards God. Plus, if is not use properly the music can be a tool to promote bad theology (unfortunately I have seen this in more then a church, but they even don t know how to recognize bad theology, because they don t have a grasp of church History or the Church Fathers, etc.). I understand the enthusiasm in praising God, but I think many churches should focus more in praising prayer (were everyone can find that enthusiasm) and learn to see God not as a mate but as the Lord

I would like the altar rails put back. I would like Jesus to be back in the prominant place on the altar and not in a side chapel. I want Jesus to be central not the priest/bishop/minister. I would like the priest to remind people that to receive on the tongue is the norm. I would like the priests/ministers to relearn how to place Jesus gently on the tongue. Some are super gentle and some are not or just dont want to! Melodeous music would be nice and appropriate for the different parts of the Mass. Not dancing in the trees or not in a heaven light years away......are children being encouraged to receive on the tongue? I think thats all. And silence in Adoration please. God bless all our priests, you are loved and prayed for.

I live the african experience every mass as I live here for 20 years. It's definitely a more expressive experience during mass than what I had back home. But the reverence and seriousness that priests take in the communion rites, how liturgy is read... even the young ones receiving communion is impressive. The worshiping with songs and dancing is a cultural thing in the sense that every culture or person has a way of connecting with God and in such cultures where music is a truly honorable way to worship God in praise, celebration or mourning and that is what works here. I've been catholic since birth but it was here that I became closer to God and don't take mass as a must do, but a joy to go and worship God because I can connect with him through the deep straight to the point sermons that speaks straight to your heart, through the reverence of holy communion, through prayers that you can actually take time to pray and be in the presence of God... I love tradition I don't think african catholics see themselves as charismatics. I actually see them more traditional following to the letter all sacraments and how as a community, everyone is kept in check truly like the say goes "It takes a village to raise a child" is literally done here.

Funny Matt mentioning playing Metallica during communion. I've been to Catholic Churches where hymns were on screens and there were drum sets and electric guitars and the Priests acted more like Protestant preachers. I went to one Roman Catholic Church in Chula Vista, CA and they had exactly what I mentioned as their choir. I recall that before mass I heard the bass player practicing a Black Sabbath song. I don't recall feeling so infuriated. That wasn't the place to play that song even for practice. I went back one other time because I had friends that attended that parish. There were some changes made, but still more of a Evangelical feel rather than Catholic.

I think Matt is in a very particular context. His aversion to some charismatic ways of expression is rooted in collective frustrations from his particular community and ezperiences (perhaps common to many in the US?).

In South Africa we are hungry for both a reverent liturgy and a deeply charismatic expression of the faith (we also frequently mix chant, hillsong as well as hymns in South African languages into one liturgy. It flows beautifully and I do not think it is "second place" to more homogeneous musical expression in mass).
