Cardiologist explains why you should stop worrying about blood pressure | Dr Sanjay Gupta
Video Overview & Insights
High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for deaths globally. But what if your blood pressure numbers were only part of that story?
I’m in America and I’m so done with Drs throwing pills at every single problem. There’s a cascade effect they refuse to consider. Started with high blood pressure and insomnia. The sleeping pill caused blood sugar to rise. Then blood pressure went up. Added another BP med that caused cholesterol to rise. Cholesterol meds raised blood sugar. Blood sugar meds caused weight gain and everything went even higher. This is with eliminating sugar and processed foods and eating more vegetables and fruits and meat. So I know it’s the pills. I also walk every day. Pharmaceutical companies should come under investigation. People need to take their health in their own hands. Drs need to listen to their patients. Something needs to change.
In this episode, we’re joined by leading cardiologist Dr Sanjay Gupta, who explains why blood pressure is not a disease, but often a scream for help. Together with ZOE’s Chief Scientist, Professor Sarah Berry, he explores when blood pressure is a harmless response to stress, food, or movement, and when it signals real, long-term damage. You’ll learn why blood pressure targets aren’t universal, why worrying can make things worse, and why quality of life matters as much as numbers.
This episode also breaks down what you can do to lower your blood pressure. Not quick fixes. Not pills. But everyday lifestyle changes that address the root cause.
I am so glad you are having this conversation Thank you so much for!!!!!😊

Are they going to mention Kidneys?
13:05 Why the ‘right’ number depends on you
15:04 Why doctors can’t agree on ‘high’
I have been on b p meds for years, and it's been uncontrolled even with increased dosage.
I increased potassium in foods and micro doses of pottasium powders. Normalized bp.
120/80. I was running 150/95 consistently. For ME, I believe it was imbalance between potassium and magnesium ( which I take magnesium complex every evening and have for years) and possibly calcium/ sodium. I'm suspecting low potassium, and i'm doing smoothies with papaya, coconut water, kiwi and banana. 4700 mg potassium is hard to take in. Focusing on food.

I’m a75 year old female and my blood pressure was running between 136/71 and 142/79. I started exercising more regularly and eating beetroot and spinach salad a few times a week as well as a few other dietary changes . I now average 125/68. I also have type 2 diabetes but very well controlled. My A1C runs 6 to 6.2. I’m on 500mg. of metformin a day. I’ve been diabetic for 9 years now and have never had to have my medication increased. I do need to loose weight though. I’m 5’4 and weigh 148 lbs.

I am a life long vegetarian , my weight is very good, I am a busy person who exercises, no breathlessness, recent eye examination showed no bleeding and all well with my eyes. I eat all the food you mentioned, little or no salt and sugar, no processed food, very little eating out, according to my smart watch my sleep is good.. I suffered from stressed as a carer and my BP went up. I am on a medication although BP now looks very normal. So what do I do?

SUMMARY FOR YOU 💁♂️
Key Takeaways
Blood pressure as a 'scream for help': Dr. Gupta explains that blood pressure is often a symptom of underlying lifestyle issues—such as poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, or weight gain—rather than a disease in itself (2:42).
The importance of individualized assessment: Doctors often rely on a single, often stressful, clinic reading. Dr. Gupta advocates for multiple, repeated measurements at home to establish a true average and looking for signs of physical damage (e.g., in the eyes or heart) before labeling a patient (17:45, 25:30).
The gut microbiome connection: Prof. Sarah Berry highlights that research has identified specific microbial signatures in the gut associated with high versus low blood pressure, suggesting that diet-driven changes to the gut microbiome could be a therapeutic target (36:35, 47:45).
Lifestyle Pillars for Heart Health
Both experts agree that addressing the root cause through lifestyle is vital:
Dietary shifts: Moving toward a whole-food, plant-based diet is crucial. This naturally increases potassium (found in bananas, figs, apricots, and leafy greens) and fiber, while reducing the high intake of salt and sugar found in heavily processed, prepackaged foods (44:05, 46:45).
Stress and Sleep: These are essential, non-negotiable pillars of health. Chronic stress and sleep deprivation directly influence hormones that constrict blood vessels and raise blood pressure (34:47, 35:11).
Exercise and Weight: Cardiovascular exercise alone can significantly lower systolic blood pressure, with additional benefits gained from sustainable weight loss (49:25).
Actionable Advice
Don't panic: Worrying is counterproductive and can raise blood pressure (16:35).
Consistent monitoring: Use a validated, home blood pressure monitor to take readings at different times of the day, following a standard routine to compare data accurately (41:15).
Start now: Improvements in how you feel can occur within weeks of making these lifestyle modifications (51:05).

Total thyroid failure or removal and poor conversion of T4 Levothyroxine to T3 active hormone, are major causes of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The current treatment is to prescribe Statins and blood pressure tablets, ignoring worsening heart failure and angina! Weight gain, depression, insomnia, feeling exhausted and cold, bad memory, joint pain and permanent headache, just ignored.
@Clare0116Less circulating blood, less pressure??
@patriciamccandless7940Cant we give blood once a month?
@patriciamccandless7940Stress and lack of good sleep are contributing to high blood pressure
@4hfourFast for 3 days then check your blood pressure. If it has gone back to normal, the issue is insulin being too high. Do a very strict KETO diet — fatty meats and salads without carbs and you’ll reverse hypertension.
For more information research: hyperinsulinemia, aldosterone, sodium retention, hypertension

@carynmartin6053Root cause = Too much Sodium & Iron Overload ( dump blood wet cupping) stop smoking and drinking and don't eat like a fat slob portion control. Limit caffeine 1 per day. Drinking will lower BP on drinking day next day BP goes UP

@ThePlastererThank you all for your Help. ! 💗👍
@stephenzies8867The thing that kills the most people is birth
@robertveve6847Want to reduce salt? Stop eating everything in a box or a can. Look at the back of those things you're eating. You'll see a lot of those can have between 300 to 1200gm or more of salt. Half of you are thrown more salt on top of that. One product can have your daily limit of salt. Try cooking your own food and watch what you are putting into it.
Here is what should really scare you. Go up to your doctor and ask how many people with high blood pressure you have treated and how many have been able to get off the pills and live a healthy, long life. I'm going to guess here, and he's probably going to try to walk around that question. Why? He or she will know they just handed those people a pill and never revisit the problem. Never once have they told the people that you can control this by what you eat. Never look at the things going on in the rest of your body that could also cause high readings. See I have a problem with my blood pressure, and throwing pills at it causes life-threatening results for me. It drops my low side way too low, and I get dizzy. The risk of falling increases, and I am a mechanic by trade, and getting up and down can be a real problem, taking pills for blood pressure. I found an underlying cause connected to my high readings in my last blood test. My white cell count is really high, and it's caused by form my bad teeth. Until I fix that problem, I'm going to fight high blood pressure. Anything having lots of salt in it pushes it over.
Red meat is not the problem, as a fact, if you change your diet to mostly meat and dairy products. Your body runs on the natural sugars your body creates; you'll have more energy. Here's the problem: all these studies on red meat always have other things on the plate with it. It's not the meat, it's the poisons used on the veggies and other things you're eating. If anything, think of the animal as a filter; it helps get those things out of your diet. I tried to eat what is said to be the standard diet, and it about kills me. I get IBS really bad, and have all kinds of problems going to the bathroom. feel like crap. Change to eating meat, and life is great; you have to learn how to eat meat again. There are things you must do along with it. Yes. All my tests are great in my blood test at 68, I couldn't ask for better. The doctor says he doesn't know how I do it. Cholesterol is good, and good Cholesterol is better than good. My teeth are the problem. My vitamin D3 is 100 too.
My BP is 136/86 I am not on medication , may I need medication?
@rathnakarrao7835I love how Dr Sanjay Gupta works. Since insulin resistance and diabetes is rampant in the UK the amount of nitric oxide in a person is important for keeping blood vessels supple. Nitric oxide is essential for insulin signalling so this is part of the blood pressure story and for men erectile dysfunction is an early signal of low nitric oxide. If we are looking at the root nitric oxide is critical and it can be improved by consuming green leafy organic vegetables but only if we do not kill our mouth microbiome with antiseptic mouthwash and take drugs such PPIs to obliterate our stomach acid. Doctors are very keen on drugging patients and damaging them with such drugs. I learned this from Dr Nathan Bryan and in my naturopathic practice I am well aware of this.
@rosblackwell5521Bring back leeches and blood-letting. The old ways were best.
@Raymond-d2l7nGreat 👍 Dr.Gupta your explanation makes sense and thanks for sharing this information I am going through high blood pressure and I am on medication which it’s really does not help that much.
@norahoneka4063Thank you Dr. Sanjay for your truthful comments and advice. I am 78 yrs currently; In the Texas snowstorm of 2021 (Jan-Feb) I experienced a CHF episode, ended up in the hospital for 1 week. Was released to my daughter’s home with heart medication. In March I then experienced a TIA, with no signs on my face other than horrible bruising on my left leg where I fell over the bathtub during the episode. That year I was on heart meds and thinners. By May they wanted to place a defibrillator in my body “” to give me 2 more years to Live”” ! 🧐I said NO and prepared myself for the great Beyond plus ate appropriate foods recommended by the Entresto/Novartis & the Heart Association recommended meals plus mild exercise. By October 2021 the cardiologist was Surprised that I had overcome the “ diagnosis “ of needing the defibrillator. Made changes on some meds. The following year they decided to do an Angiogram to check my vessels going to my heart. All came out good. Eventually the cardiologist surgeosaid he had to release my care to another cardiologist because of my Choice not to allow a defibrillator but just want necessary meds to keep me “ going”; Since then I have been under 3 different Cardiologists- who all wanted to put some type of machine in my body “ to home more years. I have stuck to my personal comm& Beliefs and tried to eat the right foods even though I stray at times. No surgery, no machines and stuff alive. Your advice is so correct because they do keep trying to control my blood pressure with pills. Sadly they are affecting my kidneys but am not under any doctors care for kidneys. I walk unassisted but slower. I will work on improving my meals to improve my blood pressure. My normal readings are around 137/60 or 127/50 at home BUT once I go to a medical appointment: 172/ 60 ‼️ 😢 I have now Subscribed to this channel and yours. 🌹My current weight is 128 lbs. 5’4”.
@Mar665TXI have never believed the blood pressure lie.We are all different and we are going to have different numbers. My blood pressure is fine until I go to the doctor
@JamieBarham-o7qIf you are carrying extra weight because your eating more than what your body needs to run it.
@kentclark9740Some things i learned from my hubby and dad having high blood, stay hydrated with water. Hubs working in construction outside sweating all day drinking 2, 2 liters of soda a day made him chronically dehydrated. Stopped that, moved to decalf for morning coffee. Drinks decalf homemade ice tea, distilled water much better. Also trim 2-3 stalks of celery using light homemade salad dressing lowers bp. Keeping streeses down, almost zero junk food, healthy diet, meat, veggies, fruits, organic breads, he was off meds about 18 yrs. He's 85 still working the same job in construction for 69 yrs, his choice not mine. He dead lifts 350lbs like its easy, (our 31 and 33 yr old kids workout) and does all this with a rotator cuff that needed surgery but he said no. Dark chocolate from Andrew Lessman's procaps co. called choconuvo lowered LDL 30 points. Hubs only eats 2 little choconuvos 3-4 days a week. Had he just gone the typical way, they'd add another diuretic leading to further dehydration, which could lead to blocked arteries needing surgery. Also, make sure magnesium levels are good along with potasium. I'm not a dr just sharing whats worked and working for people in our family and friends. Blessings
@mamaknows106215:30 exactly the problem when you look at the internet for blood pressure or any other health guidelines. I always look for my country's health guidelines because the American ones aren't the same.
@krpurple2678I find this useful anf frustrating as Zoe makes statements with out the detail… examples what strains of gut bacteria should u reduce to lower bp, and what strains should you increase, what specific foods drive that process ? What probiotic strains supplements would help that.. the reason i assume is you selling app this info should be free.. would buy the app with this prevarication.. huge fan of Dr Gupta followed york cardiology podcast for many years highly recommend straight to point no prevarification..
@ketooptimist4383The insurance companies in USA will never allow the doctors to do testing and individual care the way you are speaking. We are made by law to have health insurance that won’t pay for the correct health care! Insane! We pay $600 a month for health insurance from my husband’s work. It has a $2700 deductible for each of us before it will pay for anything! So we pay $12,600 a year before they pay. Yet they will not provide doctors or procedures that are needed! We can’t afford food to eat well either. The insurance and healthcare are miss informing us and killing us. Insane!
@minbutler7909High BP can cause "Bleeding in the Retina"? As in blood or fluid?
@Hew-JarsolI can’t seem to find a good doctor. I am a hair away from 70 years old. About 6 months ago, I went to see a doctor. She said that my blood pressure was a wee bit high. I told her not to worry about it. Since it was my Friday, (I have caffeine every Friday) I had some caffeine, plus I just ran up the stairs to get to her office. I kid you not, she said that those reasons will not affect my blood pressure at all. I will not go back to her.
@Kwash56
