One rainy evening, I finally found the courage to offer her my umbrella. That was our beginning, short, awkward, and perfect. We soon realized we shared a world of common interests. She spoke often of her dream to become a doctor and serve those who had nothing. I found myself falling for her kindness even faster than her beauty.
We dated for a time, but as our careers pulled us toward different cities, she suggested a 'break' to focus on our goals. 'If destiny wants it,' she said, 'it will bring us back.' I respected her strength, and we stayed close. But by 2018, when she started med school, her replies began to thin out, shorter, later, until they eventually stopped altogether. I told myself she was just busy saving the world.
In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, a message came from her cousin. She had been k!lled in a sudden accident on her way home from the hospital. The world stopped. I spent weeks re-reading our old chats, trying to hear her laughter in the white space between the lines.
