Westminster has finally discovered fear.

Not fear of an election.

Not fear of a difficult interview.

Fear for its own safety.

The answer from the political class is predictable: more protection, more security, more public money, more distance between politicians and the people they represent.

They have misunderstood the problem.

Bodyguards can protect politicians from individuals.

They cannot protect governments from the consequences of years of political failure.

Britain's crisis is not that MPs suddenly face security threats. Those threats must be investigated and prosecuted with the full force of the law.

The deeper crisis is that millions of voters increasingly believe Parliament has stopped listening.

For years, citizens have raised concerns about immigration, housing, taxation, policing, public services, the cost of energy and the direction of the country. Whether one agrees with every criticism is beside the point. The political reality is that many people believe their concerns have been acknowledged but not resolved.

That perception has consequences.

When governments repeatedly promise control but appear unable to deliver it, trust begins to evaporate.

When ministers respond to criticism with explanations rather than visible results, confidence weakens further.

Legitimacy cannot be guarded by police officers.

It cannot be restored by CCTV, barriers or close protection teams.

It is earned by competent government, equal application of the law, honest engagement with criticism and a willingness to change course when the public has plainly lost confidence.

History offers a simple warning.

Governments rarely lose authority because people stop hearing them.

They lose authority because they stop hearing the people.

That is the danger facing Westminster today.

Not that it is under physical siege.

But that it risks becoming politically isolated from the nation whose confidence it ultimately depends upon.

Bodyguards may protect Parliament's buildings.

Only better government can protect Parliament's legitimacy.

Official reassurance no longer reassures.

Promises of future control are no longer believed.
