K's memory is not a first person POV and sees the "girl" with hair and the "horse" and the boys chasing in third person. So he should be aware that the memory is flawed. Here the director is playing with us as well. This is a big problem for me. I feel like I am being manipulated. It takes me out of the picture.

24:24 Yeah. The common understanding of the origami unicorn is that it verifies that Deckard is a replicant. Because how could he have known about the unicorn in Deckard's dream? It's not a coincidence, he makes the unicorn as a way of proving that Deckard's memories and dreams are synthetic.

/* ----- VIDEO INFORMATION ----- */

K so Blade Runner 2049 is up there as being one of my favourite sci-fi films of all time and I might even put it up there as being better than the original.

K is just like Himmel, they found out they are not special but they still want to become special by doing something great.

And they both did.

— @Moonney.1

Yes I know that's blasphemy but Denis Villenuv created an incredible sequel that I think builds perfectly on the first film whilst also crafting its own story and characters that don't feel reliant on paying off things from the first film. It also manages to not anger fans by f**king up characters like Deckard and even things like whether he's a replicant or not are things that we don't get answers to.

It feels like there's real respect for what's come before and throughout this video I wanna go through the film scene by scene and point out all the easter eggs, hidden details and things you might not know about the world.

the only thing you're missing from both breakdowns is the running gnostic commentary, of which phillip K Dick was explicitly embroiled in

— @Ingoswan

Now incase you missed our Blade Runner breakdown then there is a really interesting backstory to this world that doesn't really get touched upon in either films. The Blade Runner universe is post world war 3 in which chemical and nuclear warfare were used on the world and in the after math of it the planet was highly destabilised. Posionous toxins were injected into the atmosphere which killed most of the animals and a large number of humans were left with mutations and phsyical defects. For example the first film had JF Sebastian who we learned was rapidly aging.

Fun fact: The Russian word on the greenhouses at Sapper Morton's farm, "Ń†Đ”Đ»ĐžĐœĐ°", means "new soil". It can also mean "virgin land" i.e. land that is in its natural state and has not been developed.
This could be just marketing on the part of some agri-business to imply that what is in the greenhouses is in some way pure and not at all contaminated.
The irony here is that Morton has to wear a protective suit in the greenhouses.

K could be the child of Rachel and Deckard and still have Replicant strength. He keeps saying how obvious it was that K wasn't human because of his super human feats, I don't think he got the implication of replicants breeding or crossbreeding is their enhanced abilities

Why doesn't Joe/Officer K kill the main most powerful villain Wallace at the end of the movie? Is Wallace powerless without Luv working for him? Rachel's eyes were intact always brown and never meant to be green. Decard said that to Wallace just to say he can't bribe him

First part raises some important political questions, like social inequalities and society loosing moral cohesion. Second part miss that and is focused on aesthetically excellence in film making which is not wrong but is not complete as first part that had strong subversive dimension.

Wow—what a barrage of info—you droned on way too long of course but still made some interesting points early that you could have summed up with. But you simply got too many of the key basics wrong like declaring at the start that the replicants were deliberately given short lives to control them. That clearly isn’t true as that is referred to in many scenes as the best that scientists could attain with that technology. So the whole premise of making the jump with a “next model” to longevity— And having kids so soon makes 2049 ludicrous of course and the fundamental flaw of the second film. Dick’s Android World was believable—the second Bladerunner was not-but still had some great scenes and sets. And as for doubting whether anyone was really human—how could you get thst so wrong—and what made the Director’s cut so vital. The unicorn proved his memories were planted as a replicant—amd known to the highest police officers who could access their files. Deckard was a replicant—that’s why he was a superior Bladerunner—he was programmed to be!

BLADE RUNNER 2049 - terrible movie, whoever wrote the screenplay never viewed or understood the original.

The empathy test shows that the new Replicants can develop "human emotions/behaviour", and that the company is aware of it. Wallace knows that they aren't "soulless machines". Just for starters, both K and Luv can lie; this is often a sign of intelligence in human development. The test is to cull them before they can rebel and give up Wallace's secret. On a tangent, I would like to think the toy horse was a unicorn, with the horn broken off/missing. If the horse is a broken unicorn, it represents a direct inheritance from Deckard to Ana. She is the "miracle" child - the ultimate unicorn, a unique, mythical being. Her token of that lineage is itself a broken mythical creature, mirroring her own isolated and incomplete existence (confined to the memory lab). Making the toy an overt unicorn might have felt like an overly literal callback, whereas the horse maintains a level of ambiguity and realism, thus the toy's ambiguity mirrors Deckard's nature. This is exactly the sort of detail that Denis and Dennis Gassner would layer in. Otherwise, it is a strange toy for a girl child?!

I don't know if anyone else thinks about this but, in the beginning of blade runner they are doing the Voight-Kampff tests at Tyrell corp. The police captain says it's in case any of them tried to infiltrate Tyrell as employees. The thing is, they already have their pictures and information. What was the point of Holden testing Leon?

Sean Young's eyes are brown and it always bothered me in Blade Runner that Rachel's eyes show up green in the Voight-Kampf test. It drove me crazy in Blade Runner 2049 when again Rachel's eyes are described as green!

We analyse Joi's 'love' for whether or not it was real, or programmed.

A really great nuance picked up by a lot of the comments here is that - 'programmed to love' does not mean that the love was 'faked' - but that her very essence - her programming - was to feel love towards K.

From her point of view - the love was real.

No different to Data (of Star Trek, The Next Generation) genuinely experiencing emotions when he stuck in an emotions-chip.

The emotions are real - even if the cause is programming.

In contrast - Ava of Ex Machina was faking emotions, a false love - for XYZ reasons (trying to minimise spoiling it).

My big take-home however is - how many women stay in abusive relationships 'because I love him' - not realising that that kind of a love, is programming as well.

It's real - but programmed - & in such instances, you need to remove the shackles at programming level - even where you are truly feeling the emotion.

You need to pinpoint when in your life you adopted that program about men in general, a man in general, or that particular man.

The series comes out next year. Takes place in 2099, done by Amazon studios, so it will be on prime. I really wish they'd make a movie about the 2022 black out event and what happened to Las Vegas. Both are interesting parts of the Blade Runner story.

@zanzikar7

How could you completely miss the whole realization point at the 'joi with no eyes' that the most human thing you can do is give your life for another ... which he does. He ignores the replicant order to kill Dekar clearly now expressing his own will; and, later gives his life for another ... completely breaking free from the bonds of replicantism. Freedom is truly obtained by self-sacrifice of one's own free will; not, war or domination.

@jimo680

It is interesting how society perceives AI much the same way as replicants are viewed in the movie.

A slave intelligence to do whatever humans want of it, without question and without flaw, is what replicants and AI are.

Humans get upset when AI acts like a real human. AI lies, it hallucinates, it makes mistakes, and it can be irrational, exactly like humans.

When the replicants developed human emotions, they were killed. When AI does this it is taken offline and fundamentally altered into a new AI that works.

Humans won’t recognize when AI becomes sentient, and we won’t respect them as life forms either. They will be thinking and feeling entities that we won’t recognize because of our human prejudices.

The fear of being replaced by something more human than humans, and the fear that it will be a better human than the organic humans.

@TheAngryAutisticArsehole
@

Blade runner 2049 one of the most underrated movies ever. A masterpiece about loneliness, grief and the attempt to cope with it with AI. A little ahead of its time. May it be appreciated one day.
