Are dividend ETFs really the key to building passive income? Let's discuss the most common mistakes European investors make with high yield dividend ETFs, the impact of taxes, the psychological benefit of dividends and my top dividend ETF picks for 2026! You'll also find out how my own investing strategy changed over the years.

The VDIV looks very good at the moment! the financial sector has reduced to 32%... this is normal in a short period of time?

Regarding tax on ETFs: In Denmark we do not only pay tax on dividens from the ETF, but also tax on unrealised gains from the ETF - every year.

So every year we have to come up with money for the tax payment - even if we havent sold anything.

That sucks!

I'll chubbyFIRE in 2-3 years with Vanguard FTSE All-World (5%) + VanEck Dividend Leaders (45%) + Fidelity Global Quality Income (45%). Currently additing Vanguard USD Corporate 1-3 Bond and cash for safety in case there's a crash in the next 5 years. I'm 34 and don't want to calculate how many shares to sell when I'm 90 LOL. Although AI will probably take care of that in the future for me, having no kids we want our capital gains to come in as easily as possible. Wife and I could be in a coma and the money would still come in. That's why we primarily use distributing ETFs. Wife has an old S&P500 acc. though, we might sell that one for special expenses.

I dont mind paying the taxes - until I have the profit it is OK (...although, especially when it comes to individual investors this is complete robbery from our beloved governments, as the invested money already have paid taxes). I even consider adding REIT ETF to the bunch if I can find a good one :)

@BenzinioB
@

I like to split my etfs as 50/50 ACC&Div - if s&p500 is down, I'll still get dividends

@nv-systems

Well, thank you for the Xtrackers MSCI World (accumulating) ETF - I added into my portfolio, I like it a lot.

Dividends are awesome but when you have enough capital to live off of them, not when you are just starting out.

Besides, you can always sell a share if you need the money and dividends doesnt have to be paid out.

Such a great video, I am following you over a week and learn alot. Living in the Netherlands as an expat and looking forwards to invest now after seeing your videos. Do you know how to create a video related to EU taxation for different countries?

Thank you very much for the video. What do you think about EUR Hedged ETFs? Does it make sense to have 50% the portfolio hedged and the other 50% unhedged? Thank you!

Nice One.

I'm currently focusing on building passive income through monthly dividends.

I invest €1,000 per month mainly in ARR (a high-yield REIT), and sometimes in AGNC.

The goal is to reach €500/month in dividends as fast as possible.

Once I reach that, I’ll start diversifying into safer dividend stocks and ETFs like Realty Income (O) and US Equity Premium Income.

I monitor prices daily and reinvest all dividends to grow faster

Hi Angelo, just writing to let you know that in the Netherlands Trade Republic customers can now activate a Dutch IBAN checking account, meaning they can transfer money faster between banks, with 2% interest rate even in cash above 50.000. The Dutch branch of Trade Republic is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) with the usual guarantee up to 100.000. I am very happy for this as it will make my life easier with taxes as for many of your viewers from the NL, just wanted to share with you, cheers!

ps: New customers will directly get this account option, existing customers with a German IBAN account will get a message from Trade Republic and they can follow the instructions within the app to activate the NL checking account. Saving plans and balances are migrated by Trade Republic during the migration process. I did activate it today and hopefully it will be a swift migration. Will be in touch.

Hi Angelo, another excellent video. I have a question related to the brokers you mentioned, such as Trade Republic. I love it because I'm a beginner, but I hear many people say that investing in a "secondary" exchange (LS Exchange) is a disadvantage due to high spreads and low liquidity. Is this true? Is this a problem in the long term? What's your opinion? I'm new to this world, and as you can probably tell, like many others, I'm afraid of making the wrong decision about which broker to use for the long term. Should I be confident choosing Trade Republic? Thank you for everything. It's people like you who have changed my life. Cheers!

Hey Angelo! Great video as always. I remember it was only a few months ago that you invested in the Invesco ETF but you have managed to put in almost have the investment that you have in the Vanguard. That is impressive! Are you allocating more of your income or was it a reallocation from peer to peer profits etc?

@davidconcannon6503
@

Hi Angelo, thank you for the video, do you have any ideas about REOC like BAM for example ?

@milzmfi7909
@

awesome explanation again, Angelo, thank you! I'm an investor in the NL, accumulating ETFs only, which get taxed in a so called "Box 3" regardless of whether they are paying out dividends or not, whether I sold them or not... the taxman assumes a fictitious 6% return every year, regardless of how they actually performed 😂 this is essentially a wealth tax, and since I am investing for FIRE, no need for distributing ETFs for now, just need this Box 3 thing to change (they already started...). Something else, I am very interested in learning more about ESG investing, any chance you can enlighten us on that front some time please?

Nice work. How about ISPA from ishares.

@andreizamfir3207
@

what about the cost of social insurance for you and your wife that is currently covered by your employment? in case you retire early you have to pay for that separately which increases your monthly costs significantly and moving you away from FI? you say you would work something you're passionate about then, but in case you would need to be free then these costs would add up in Austria or not?

@ppetar87
@

What's your opinion on JGPI? It seemed like the perfect ETF, but the past 7 months it has only gone downwards.

Hi Angelo, again a great vid.
I know you stopped with P2P platforms, but what do you think of Scramble Up?
Curious about your opinion.

I should have bought Euro hedged ETF cause they are performing better than the unhedged

how do you invest in bitcoin? with which app? would be cool if you could make a video on it. great video as always!

@Jhin_Wick
@

Thank you for the video. The truth is that in terms of long term appreciation, accumulation ETFs are better for the reasons mentioned in the video. In terms of distribution ETFs, the JPM NASDAQ ETF DIST (SRN : JEQP), for example, with a dividend yield of more than ten percent and a monthly payment, did not make a difference.

@Mulder950

Considering only the last 5 years, the AllWorld High Div ETF performed exactly like the normal AllWorld ETF.

Opinion: never make any investment moves because of psychological benefits. Only do what is right mathematically. Almost all avoidable mistakes in investing are made because of moves for psychological benefits.

Getting paid every month is nice psychologicaly but accumulative ETFs are a better option in the long term. Plus if you started investing a bit late in your life (I started at 42) stocks are a better option, although riskier. At first I started conservative by investing on an accumulative S&P500 ETF. Now I only have stocks and it worked really well for me so far.

Thx angelo. I am adding the VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders ETF to my existing position in the Vanguard FTSE All-World High Dividend Yield ETF.

Plan is to pass down the portfolio to my child, that for a distr ETF makes more sense to me, since I will hopefully not have to sell stocks of the ETF during retirement, but instead live off the divs (?). This was child gets the full amount of stock purchased and the ports grows even further until his retirement, etc …. Can this be a way of building some kind of generational wealth ??

@spyrosgrammatikos5406
@

Hey Angelo, huge fan of the channel! I am curious, since both VWCE and VGWE are accumulating, why did you go with VWCE over VGWE?

@YosifAmongNature
@

The tax laws in Sweden are a bit different. We have kind of a tax sheltered account, where we don’t pay taxes on dividends, but a small tax on the total value of our investments. I prefer dividends, the strongest reason is when we have enough to retire, market price doesn’t matter. Imagine only having accumulating ETFs and we get another GFC or a serious market crash. Sure, dividends might get cut, but you don’t have to sell. I've also noticed that with years where the market is pushed lower, my portfolio outperform. During 2022 I ended the year positive. During liberation day sell off, my portfolio held strong.

I do understand every country is different when it comes to taxes on dividends, so I can understand when people want to invest in non-dividend paying stocks or ETFs.
