We've all seen Oscar winning performance, but most of us can't define exactly what makes the acting so good.

So today I wanted to watch a beginner, intermediate, pro and finally an Oscar Winning Actor (Anne Hathaway & Heath Ledger)take on the exact same scene, so I can break down the differences in the performances and we can't start to understand exactly what makes acting, good or bad.

Anne Hathaway is just inspirational. You can see everything she's feeling. BUT- a director and camera cuts are just as important.

I'm Tristan Spohn, a professional actor who you may have seen on Netflix or Peacock on Stranger Things, Law & Order or FBI, and today I'm breaking down a beginner vs an Oscar winning actor.

Show our actors some love!

I don't like AH and her "h". didn't do anything for me. artificial actually - I almost believed it, and then "hm" or "hh", really? killed it for me, cause you can totally see she did it on purpose. Or maybe too much of a close up. whatever. Heath is surprisingly good. It's more about the character an actor builds first or transforms into, and then that particular type reacting in their own authentic way to the situations. Although, I've never seen a single actor (Oscar worthy or otherwise) that was able to completely transform and conceal their own personality, i.e. Ego. you can always see who they are as a person, so it's hard for me to watch most of the movies nowadays, I just can't buy it. "don't believe it" as Stanislavsky would say. pro-female was actually on the right track. I could see and feel her "thoughts", there was some depth. AH, not so much. not sure why people liked it.

She didn't think he died in a trucking accident. She knew exactly how he died. Did you watch the movie? Her entire face gave it away that she knew.

1:35 no, him looking down let's us now he's not letting anyone in because he's hiding his feelings, in context, because he's ashamed of his feelings, probably because of societal pressure.

I hate this videos in which anybody can give their uneducated opinion.
Truly this social networking has ruined us all.

Thank you 😊

8:35 😂😂I think the best way to act is using other peoples accent😂😂

Honestly, I would have thought Ledger's character would be fighting back tears or have a trembling chin. But he was... Flat affect. The lack of emotion made it seem like Ledger's character was in the "medium experience group." I'm surprised that cut made it in the final.

@hushingsilence

crazy how the scene only really clicks once you get to the more experienced actors. you suddenly better understand the context and the relationships between the characters

Anne reacts to 1963 like she was making a connection in her mind.

Yes good actors. I see differences.

When Ann took it all in and realized this man was more than Jacks “buddy” it made me want to cry. She felt the betrayal of what that place really meant. There is a huge difference between watching someone act out a part and the actors making you forget they are acting, feeling what they feel, tearing up as they are because we are in the moment and we have a window to their soul.

Were they directed? Or just winging it? What are the qualifiers

Like anyone wants to take advice from a 26 year old who is basically just a background actor.

What a great video. The side-by-side were incredibly helpful along with your commentary.

What you interpret as nina having emotion, i thought was her reading a script in her 2nd language…

I wonder what would happen if they were all directed by Ang Lee, had the same amount of prep time, with the same production values.

Definitely not me watching this before a theater audition 😭😭🙏

What makes it so good in the eyes of the Academy is how far the acting pushes 'the agenda'. The greater the push the greater the consideration. If you think Hollywood (the wood of holly trees was used to make wands), is about actiing you're not using your critical thinking skills.

Most acting I view, whether onstage or onscreen, sounds like it’s being read.

very interesting video! I'm an actress from Brasil and I learned a lot only in those almost 20 minutes. acting is about be natural, feel what are u saying, connect u w/the character. thanks for the review Tristan.

Too much useless comments in between. The comparison of all these scenes are strong. let the scene end fully and then comment - otherwise no scene is fully landing and viewers get annoyed by the constant commenting..

The actor lady pro was very good!

I am so disgusted by this movie! No excuses to those that play two sides of the hand without telling the other the truths! Lust above integrity and then having children and still playing chess! Just gross! The cheating, the lies, the manipulation, because you are selfish beings wanting what you want! Without caring about those your choices and yes I mean choices affect others! I hated this movie! I am not anti gay! You love who you love, but don’t betray and play games to hide your true self and harm those you chose to being into your sick game!

It IS FLASHIER, the CAMERA ANGLES, QUALITY OF FILMING

@LomitaAnn

There’s a huge difference due to lighting, camera angle and sound. Now do the same with the other actors.

Oscar winnning? Oskar is not nesesarily a good movie. people should have their own opinions. Best movies didnt get an Oscar because somebody`s kids didnt sleep with somebody and money werent exchanged.

Just a note on Tristan's pronunciation of "mountain". He says MOUN-en. I've noticed this with a lot of younger people. Words like button become BUH-en. Very distracting.

1:55 Is it just me or does she sound bored when describing a man's..sorry, her HUSBAND's death?!And why is she mumbling and rushing in her dialogue delivery? I couldn't understand most of what she said

Crap. Two Oscar winning performances, right? But they had lots more than talent. They had directors and coaches and rehearsals and context and settings and locations and time and other scenes in the can shot so there are connections between the actors and so much more. I'm a professional, one of a hundred thousand nobody ever heard of. What I know is that with the same environment, I would give a different but no less compelling performance. We are as good as the smn of the parts, my talents and theirs, your talents and mine together, with a director and dialect coach and your script and rehearsals. You got lucky. Your talents were seen by someone who could get you an audition. Try me.

A real actor is when you do not realize who the actor is anymore but you only see the character they portray. One example is, Hallie Eisenberg from The Miracle Worker 2000.

I can’t stand it when young actors critique veteran performers. Saying someone “played it cold” is just an opinion, but every artist interprets the art, scene, mood, and character differently. This was his Heath Ledger. That’s like Jaden Smith critiquing Sidney Poitier or Denzel Washington. Heath was impressing seasoned actors like Mel Gibson and casting directors even early in his career. He’s one of those professionals every actor should study closely—because he was exquisite. Many young actors today don’t come close to the caliber of those who came before. This isn’t meant to be hurtful—it’s simply true. Compare most younger actors’ work to legends like Humphrey Bogart, Rita Hayworth, Marlon Brando, Judy Garland, Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews, Michael Keaton, Tony Curtis, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Cicely Tyson, Jim Carrey, Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, Phillip Seymore-Hoffman, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, River and Joaquin Phoenix, (All of the Culkins') or Dakota Fanning (who, at nine, held her own alongside Denzel in *Man on Fire*)—and you’ll see exactly the point. There’s acting… and then there’s art. Think about it.🎭
