Video Overview & Insights
In this video, we'll cover the essential gear a beginner needs to know about, and the gear you'll need to pack for your first trip. We'll go through each item, explaining why it's important and how to choose the right one for you.
Pretty light on the clothing department, I guess your not in the Pacific Northwest.
We'll also share our recommended backpacking setup, which weighs only 15 pounds! This includes a lightweight tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cooking gear, water filtration system, and more.
Whether you're planning your first backpacking trip or just looking to upgrade your gear, this video has everything you need to get started. So grab your backpack and let's hit the trails!
๐บ SLEEP SYSTEM VIDEO
Great advice and video. Agree with your choices. Need long pants in australia because of snakes. Loose fitting jeans or canvas that they canโt bite through. Probably best to wake a long sleeve shirt. Need a down vest or jacket for evenings as it gets cold inland. I use a life straw to filter water. .

๐บ HOW TO CATCH FISH BACKPACKING
Hey! My friend and I are building a Canadian outdoor gear startup called Tuckamore, and weโve been developing a modular magnetic attachment system for trekking poles and other gear.
Weโre at about 90% on our first prototype and are starting to get real feedback from hikers before we finalize it. Since youโre active in the outdoor space, I thought your opinion would actually be useful.
Weโre not asking for a promo or anything. Just honest feedback on whether the product seems practical, what youโd change, and if it solves a real problem for hikers.
Would you be open to taking a quick look at it?

I just spent 650 in a 3 person 31/2 lb tent I have myself (120lb adult) and my two kids (100lb preteen, 35lb 3yo. Trying to figure out how to do this and not spend thousands! Also thinking I should return the tent and go into marketplace but nothing seemed any cheaper!

Let's maybe promote shopping local before going to REI and amazon!! Small town shops are closing left and right or struggling to just break even becuase of REIs and online shopping. No shame to those going to those resoucres if you absolutely last resort have to- just putting out there to try for local first!! Remember a huge part of the outdoor industry is the community and history of these janky wacky but awesome shops.

eyy excited to take my Nemo 15 on its first trip in 2 weekends!
@thematthewyoung$3,000 daytrip/weekender beginner pack. Must be nice. Let's hope you're really, really into it if that's a starter pack.
@briancrawford24335:54 you have a open fire but you still use a gas cooker
Shame.
I also always bring a couple Ziploc bags for trash to pack out and a kitchen garbage bag that I can put over my pack in the event of sudden rain. A good idea if you are rolling with down. I also bring a Frog Togs rain jacket for myself, it's cheap, light, and is good if you encounter a chilly wind.. Great setup!
@RickyDeagueroIs that a compression sack you have your sleeping bag in? My Nemo 15 is HUGE in the bag it came in. What size compression sack do I need?
@nclife7032This is the most mainstream a gear list can get. Also extremely affordable.
@MyToxicMasculinityGreat video!!! Iโd love to see more outdoor creators encouraging shopping local if thereโs a shop in their area. Lots of amazing locally owned outdoor shops out there. โค
@MightyM0_I hate the Sawyer bag! CNOC is what I use. In fact I have boatload of the Sawyer bags I have never used. The Jet-boil is appealing, however, if you are ever in a situation where you run out of fuel, or the temps are too cold for the butane stove you can always use a regular pot and a fire to cook you food, which you can't with the jet-boil pot. Good vid as usual Jon!
@GarrettMartinisI think a lot of the comment section is unhappy with the price so I'd just like to point out that this is a guide for supplies not on the exact brands you should be buying and using. It's just to help you figure out what sort of items you should bring on your trip and what you should be prepared for.
Side note: Thanks for the great video Jon! Your advice is great and helps out a lot especially since I live in Idaho as well!
"Setup for first adventure" Shows insanely expensive gear
@Wosa_every time i watch one of these I forget that most hikers live in places with better weather than i do ๐ญ snow in July is no joke
