mann how long afore they lose11 all their money?

— @madhusudanranganathan1382

Barcelona vs PSG gave us the perfect example of how modern football is evolving. From aggressive man-oriented pressing to fluid build-up patterns, both Hansi Flick and Luis Enrique showed us why pressing, stretching the pitch, and verticality are at the heart of the game’s next tactical revolution.

Barcelona vs PSG wasn’t just a Champions League clash, it was a tactical blueprint for the future of football.

new style
alright
basic principles override

midfield is up further
defence is midfield?
you don't gain midfield, you lose positional play
midfield is heart of play
lose midfield, lose control of play
for what? more goal scoring opportunities?
this is more entertainment than enjoyment

making sense? mom gimme a bag of chips, I'ma watchin' chumps league

The possession era has been, by a wide margin, the least entertaining era of football in my 30 years of watching. It seems like it's already on its way out, but it really can't happen fast enough.

Chapters

The thing is most of the greatest fullbacks were so high quality player bcuz they need to win those 1v1 when they are wide example cafú and Roberto carlos, even players like grosso, lahm (who played both inverted late and wide early in his career) or someone like Ashley Cole, Irwin, etc. Positional play required less 1v1 and dribbling from the fullbacks bcuz they their in the middle just baiting press, in one touch situations. Meanwhile the old wide idea that was popular among Cruyff, Menotti, and others, require those wide fullbacks to be good at that (dribbling, shooting and long passes). i'm pretty sure that we will start to see more of those old school players. Also I point out that most of the pep guardiola losses lately in these mess up years were just bcuz he is so reclutant to play that "double width" (1 fullback low and 1 winger high) So the teams end up pressing man city and making the game bounce and ricochet!

Gasperini and before that Bielsa deserves some credit for aggressive man to man marking seen in recent years

05:39 Swith to Zonal and Areas of Attack

07:11 Stretching the Pitch in Attack

Simple fix just play a 4 2 3 2 in build up during goal kick and I wish barca had the players to do this but they just don't.

The best way to describe modern football is players making decisions rather structured football.

Hey bro can u please make a video on liverpools recent struggles?

@rebonerapita389

Very interesting bravo

@MattiasConte

Bayern does this even more extensively and is more versatile; while they were exposed at times last year, this year they seem to have tweaked it and are more stable and balanced.

@SorcherFepp
@

Lucho had PSG bossing it pretty much without half of their starters, especially in the second half. They are better drilled machine, play quicker, move better and use the spaces better.

@seven92023

I've noticed how Liverpool in certain games are using an underlapping fullback and then keeping him up the pitch like an inside right. Connor Bradley especially.

Well both managers are so good on their tactics. Only different with them is PSG have all the good players, Bacra doesn’t have a good and enough players 😢😢😢

I would have to disagree with you on your definition of "Man Marking". For example, at the 8:24' point in the vidoe you are saying that Barcelona are pressing in a Man Marking system. Look how you have 3 defenders close to 2 defenders. Rashford is at the D on the box, but he is there for 2 reasons. 1. If the 3 can win the ball, they can quickly find Rashford basically free in the box and also cut off the pass back to the GK and the center back. (Pressure, Cover, Balance.) Yes, there are teams that just Man Mark. You will see if the attacker moves, and the 1 player follows independently of the ball. Here, all the players have positions relative to the ball. It is not dependent on how high up the field they are.

Barca's gung ho approach is to cover the defensive weaknesses through offside traps. Lucky for them, the top trio of PSG was out; otherwise they would have conceded at least 5.

@MrEmperorSoon
@

i read here that long ball and classic n9 will prevail in the future, it is already happening in PL, Liverpool played long ball over to Salah or nunez last year, you can win a PL but not a CL, team like PsG or Bayern can easily defend on this type of long ball, we saw it last year with PsG knocking Liverpool and Arsenal who played long ball during their game againt Paris.Newcastle who plays essentially like that got spanked by a Barca where NFC has barely been able to hold on the ball during the game where Lamine Yamal was not even playing.the future and the present belong to this type of tactics, i can see that Liverpool want to switch to this Tactic as they brought Kerkes and fripong to play on the wings, it takes time to adjust but they will get it.

I think the "easiest" way to solve the man to man/zonal pressing is beating your man, like what Gerrard Martin did in the first half. However, PSG's constant pressure made Barca lose so much momentum, options and dominance that clearing the ball was the only option. Seems like football is going to transition back to a much more creative and less robotic era.

@Wolvezzz404
@

Unfortunately Alonso's new real madrid is nowhere near this high class pressing 😢, that's why Barcelona beat us everytime previous season

Modern football is so complex man😅

@sadmanhaquenafis1338
@

Double width like in the 2000s is back. I was tired of watching teams trying to always invert a fullback but having no width in the back line when playing from the back which then would lead to despite space being created, wingers always receiving the ball with their back against the goal and forcing them to dribble in awkward ways just to then play it back again.

@mariadanielalavia8877
@

barcelona has less quality than PSG, B team and they got outclassed. lmao

@AjeebAurGareeb
@

To me the problem with Barcelona is the they are never in control of the game, they are fun to watch because they always go at 300kmh speed but that's not sustainable over the course of a season and even in the same game as we saw last year against Inter when they had the final in their hands and they let it slip by playing a high defensive line with 1 minute to go. I don't trust this attitude in big games against tactically sound opponents and if PSG had at least their starting offensive players healthy, that 2nd half would have been a massacre. They have to become a smarter team to reach their full potential

@Simshady95
@

As a Barca fan I think it’s crazy how the man who destroyed Barca 8-2 with aggressive play and pressing non stop physicality comes to Barca and can’t beat the man who last made gave us the last champions league Barca won Luis Enrique is a great coach but I’m confident Barcelona can beat them . Flick exposed psg as well so many 1v1 with rashford and the centre back while hakimi was up the pitch Barcelona should’ve been 3-0 in the first half

@chll3194ch
@

I was there at Montjuic.

I saw them press us up against our own back line. We couldn't get out of our own half.

It was painful to watch. We were drowning for 45 minutes, and it's a miracle we only lost by 1 goal.

great video. im seeing more direct play, long balls out of the back, and more than anything else: a lot more crossing into the box, instead of cutting inside.

@matthewdanna8800

Interesting break down. If we get into details, these systems do rely especially on possession AND individual quality in the end. Possession to keep players position into control, and individual quality because once a duel is lost and the ball does the other side, it becomes very vulnerable to counter attacks. Centerbacks in this case become very crucial, and I suppose it’s one of the reasons PSG were so pleased to recruit Zabarnyi.

On the other hand, it requires huge individual quality, at least from one or two pivots in each line. Because in order to break through safely, you can’t afford to lose the ball midway. So if one player does not have that bypassing quality, it must pass the ball to the other in the line who can, be it by passing it backwards to the lower line to pass it back, or in PSG case, find the extremely abnormal fullbacks/wingers they have.

I see now.

@rowanwild8445

Nice video, lots to unpack. I'm curious, is the switch from zone to man always based on a specific trigger (like offense passing the ball back to the keeper, or ball being beyond a certain line)? How do you make sure you don't have part of your team playing zone and the other man? Is there a specific player calling "zone" or "man" or whatever?

Would like to know what you think can be a tactical solution to such sides, especially PSG who look unbeatable at times. From what I have noticed from Barcelona, the high press dies out in the dying minutes, leaving the end result on which team was physically more imposing for the majority of the match, say the semi-final against Inter or the clash against PSG. Or is football taking the route where physical prowess and individual brilliance will ultimately seal of the matches, of course, supported by these modern day tactical fundamentals?

@arnnabray4383
@

What is confusing in your analysis is that when Ten Hag implemented similar buildup tactics at Manchester united with the fullbacks dropping deep, it was not modern football but a problem.

Remember when Leeds got promoted under Bielsa and every pundit regurgitated some rubbish about how bad man to man marking is

@ethanjwa786
@

I recognized the during the game how wide and sometimes low, Barca mostly but also PSG at times, play with their full backs in build up play, it is interesting to see how much they trust their individual quality to problem solve. I remember noticing that exact situation you showed when Martin beat his defender and how much space that created. It is crucial to also mention the importance of quality players to be able to play this way.
Love the work you do!

I suggest you gs-liverpool game too. Pressing tactics were so interesting in that match

@alibahadraksoy1362

I disagree that this differs from positional play, I think it all stems from the total football ideology with each team focusing on a specific aspect of it. I think the whole argument about teams who played possession based football didn’t have players who can win 1vs1’s is a myth, just look at the team best known for possession FC Barcelona in that time Busquets was able to win 1vs1’s and play out or destroy the press with a drop of a shoulder, Messi, Villa, Pedro, Henry, Ronaldinho, Iniesta, etc all players who won 1vs1’s and were creative to beat the press. I think the main difference is that all of the top teams copied aspects of total football, high press, positional play, quick passes and movements, attacking football, etc. with the exceptions of a few teams that sat deep and hit in the counter, but even they incorporated aspects of total football mainly the high press and the idea that the entire team defends. If you look at Barca in 2009 play you can see that the fullbacks are wide not inverted which was a tactic later evolved for numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. Now that most teams emulate the style they have to adapt and create small tactical variations that can give them an advantage.

@i0073

Yamal doesn’t press as intensely as the other forwards, same thing happened against inter where Bastoni and Dimarco were having a field day on his side.

I'm a Barca fan but I'm not a fan of this extremely high pressing and always pressing style of football. It tires out players especially of the team that plays in a top league. It suits PSG more because their league is not competitive and they can afford to rest their players. I'm a huge fan of the Pep and MSN era of football and for me, no style will ever be more enjoyable and better...

@itxJulien

When all teams become too good at man to man high presses, football will evolve back to the long ball and challenge for aerial dominance.
