You know what truly breaks my heart? Seeing talented people who were born and raised in my homeland represent other countries on the world stage. It’s painful to think that my country and its people have to watch some of their brightest stars carry another nation’s flag because circumstances led them away from home.

Arash, an Iranian singer loved by millions, represented Azerbaijan at Eurovision. And now, during the World Cup, Alireza Faghani, one of the finest referees to come from Iran, officiates matches as a representative of Australia.

No matter which flag they stand under, their roots remain Iranian, and their achievements make many Iranians proud. But at the same time, it’s impossible not to wonder how beautiful it would be if these talents could represent the country where their journey began.
