Antarctica - Encounters at the End of the World. Documentary

Video Overview & Insights

Encounters at the End of the World is a 2007 American documentary film by Werner Herzog. The film studies people and places in Antarctica. It was released in North America on June 11, 2008, and distributed by THINKFilm.

When I first saw this film in 2009, I decided to follow through on my life’s dream of going there. 5 years later saw me reach the continent, where I would serve 3 summers and one winter over at McMurdo. Thank you, Werner Herzog.

What song is playing in the background? I couldn't find it in the original documentary myself, unfortunately. ^^

I feel like Dr.Ainley is the human version of that penguin. When the narrator was explaining about the penguin he was really talking about Dr Ainley.

38:49 "Do you think that the human race and the other mammals fled in panic from the oceans and crawled on solid land to get out of this?" That's such a terrifying phrase, it would belong in a Lovecraft story.

So very cool. I really like how Werner thinks and asks questions. He’s a dying breed of unique thinkers.

Acredito que o pinguim foi tomado de um sentimento genuíno de curiosidade, o mesmo sentimento que fez com que nós humanos explorássemos o mundo. Só quem se arrisca merece o viver o extraordinário 🐧

I wish they had followed the penguin wherever he went; maybe they would have discovered the secrets of the universe. The penguin has something to do with the Matrix, I'm sure of it.

The supreme irony of MAGA elevating a penguin comitting suicide

@illvminatvs3194
@

That penguin wasn't in even nearly enough physical and mental stress to be suicidal; the penguin had absolutely no injuries and was fit to belong and get accepted in its group. And only if that were not the case, would the penguin be suicidal. Besides, penguins don't have consciousness in the sense that humans do; humans have metacognition and know what is right and what is wrong. Penguins don't. The main plausible reason for that penguin's behaviour is perseveration. A clash of instincts. Penguins run on instincts and instincts only. For example, following the group, or staying with the group, or eating with the group, or heading towards their colony. In that penguin, the instinct of "rejoining and following the colony" failed, probably because of a confusion or neurological problem it had that somehow triggered at that time. And his instinct for movement kicked in, which is why he perseveringly started heading in another direction. Not because he was suicidal or had a goal in mind, but because one of his instincts failed and another one got triggered.
