Anesthesia oral boards: The most intimidating test I’ve ever taken

Video Overview & Insights

Many consequential exams line the long road to becoming a board certified anesthesiologist. But none felt as intimidating as the actual board certification exam itself. In this video, I describe how this exam is so different from the others, and also provide some advice for future examinees.

Now i understand why the anesthesiologist bill was higher than the surgeon for my surgery.

The BEST anesthesiologist and by far the best doctor on YouTube.

Thank you for always seeking to educate us, Dr. Feinstein!

Dr Max I do believe this is my favorite. I’ve seen a lot of your videos and with this one you had my rapt attention all the way through. Anesthesiology is a fascinating field of medicine. Learn something new every time. Thanks…

The best advice I ever received and gave to my students is answer the question with the fewest most appropriate words and not offer up free information without prompting.

This shows, if done correctly, a good understanding of the subject, and many examiners will just move on to the next question.

How interesting. I am surprised that in the US all exams at med school are done on a computer. In my country approximately half of exams are oral exams. For example pathophysiology, histology or microbiology are oral exams. Same with anaesthesiology, infectology, immunology, psychiatry. Then in our final year (6th year) we have 4 oral state exams from internal medicine, surgery, obgyn and paediatrics in front of a committee.

And I was annoyed of having to pay like 50 or 100€ for the board exam and annoyed that it‘s 50 kms away 😀 (in Germany) and only 6 months before you can take the test again

I had the flu, the pukey kind. It was for nursing boards but still not supposed to leave out the room and the bathroom was right there. I had my ID in my hand and the trash can in the other. Well the person stood right in front of me as if I were faking so it was a bad day for projectile without wanting to make things go airborne. Never even stopped me after the second time. Quite the memory. Congratulations!😊

Dear Max,

Its always captivating to listen to you. Its also quite impressive to realize, although partly, the amount of work and knowledge involved in completing your training.

@JustMe00257

Congratulations on working so tirelessly to meet the challenge of passing the exam. You can be proud of your work in your training and of your character in facing the challenge without quitting. It must feel good to have achieved something that so few are capable of and are willing to work for. You have earned respect that reflects well on your character and your promise to see this to the end.

Hi Max, quick question. I am a junior in high school interested in general Anesthesiology, I am currently looking into the colleges that I want to attend. Though I am a bit confused on whether I should go into pre med, I understand that this is not a major which is why I am looking into a biology major, however what would you suggest? Should I go into a pre med program while being a biology major or should I simply settle for a biology major?

Ahh yes.. the Rite of Passage for all of us as medical specialists. Mine were decades ago, first in Canada, then in the US. The Canadian exams were far more aggressive, so my American boards seemed like a walk in the park.
It's important to realize that the purpose of the exam is to determine that you are competent, organized, and logical in your approach. Too much detail, throwing out factoids to impress the examiners, and deflecting from the question asked are all to be avoided.
Since you passed the writtens, you know the facts -- it's how you will apply them that the orals seek to draw out. There should be no reason to fail.

Thanks for sharing your experiences as a fellow. I was very ill in 2015. One of the fellows that made rounds with the attending endocrinologist took note of my symptoms and made a suggestion for a particular test. With that I was on the way to recovery. I appreciate teaching institutions and all the professors and students that make for good outcomes. Congratulations for passing this difficult test. Your next goal should be help other doctors complete their fellowships and pass difficult tests. You should be very proud!

Nice job changing the pictures on the computer :). I was a software engineer at Microsoft and Google. Not to compare boards to our interview process, but I can recall thinking I did very poorly, but actually getting the job. Part of the process was to push to the limit to see how candidates would react and how they would recover and simply ask for help or say "I don't know" that is not always a bad thing. Keep up the good work on your channel!
