Andy Burnham wins Makerfield by-election - will he now challenge Keir Starmer for PM? | BBC Newscast
Video Overview & Insights
Labour’s Andy Burnham wins the Makerfield by election - so how could we see a challenge to Keir Starmer as Labour Party leader?
So it was like a silly ploy to pretend that Labour were on the UP... when they had the guy with the most reliable seat resign so that the reliable seat could just be sat on by a different person.. Ok. Musical Chairs... was a fun watch.
Burnham won almost 25,000 votes, beating Reform UK's Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 votes. In his victory speech Andy Burnham said "Everyone knows that politics isn't working, and has previously said he would seek to enter any Labour leadership contest.
So what happens now?
Starmer "please don't make a leadership challenge"
Burnham "I won't if you put your head between your legs and kiss ur own arse"
Starmer "let me discuss with my advisors"
Adam and Chris are joined by Kevin Fitzpatrick political reporter for Radio Manchester and Luke Tryl Director of More in Common.

00:56 What the result means for Labour
All respect Andy, but you'll make no difference mate. This is not about Labour's last chance. The whole country is ruined, and it's going to take a heck of a lot more than just another Labour guy to sort it!

Matthew 16:13-17
When Jesus came into the coast of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou are John the Baptist: some Elias; and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He said unto them, But whom say you that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed are thou, Simon Barjona; for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

The last throw of the dice for a dying labour party, Burnham is about to face the scrutiny, the full spotlight of the nation, and the media, and I think he will fold like a cheap suit, and when he fails, where will the Labour party go then?

What now? Same old, same old. The politicians will tell everyone they're working for the people but they're not. They never are and never have been. They will work for their own interests, the funder interests, the Party interests and then perhaps, if there's something in it for them, they might, possibly, do something for the jolly old public. Especially if there's an election coming up. ALL politicians are poisonous, self interested toads. Don't ever be taken in by them - behind their smile is nowt but a snake with a sharpened stiletto aimed at your heart and your wallet.

@richardscullion9381SAME OLD SAME OLD. Different face same empty promises of change . 3 more years now with an unelected new PM. Talk the talk , walk the walk.... Let's see if any change that benefits the indigenous population occurs. I wouldn't hold your breath. More of the same , we will be dragged back into EU and more asylum gravy train boats will arrive. WHAT WE WANT .. CRIME UNDER CONTROL... LIFE SENTENCE TO MEAN LIFE WITH NO REMISSION FOR GOOD BEHAVIOUR - HENRY NOWAK gets no second chances R.I.P. ... REFERENDUM ON THE DEATH PENALTY ... NO TWO TIER POLICING : AKA INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY ... FREE SPEECH... PREFERABLY A SNAP ELECTION SO WHOMEVER IS PM WILL HAVE A MANDATE FROM THE ELECTORATE OVER YET ANOTHER SHOE IN. TIME FOR CHANGE .. MAKE BRITAIN GREAT BUT FAIR FOR ALL
@daddycool1967Well he shouldn’t be crowned the Prime Minister without a Labour Party contest and telling us what his policies are. It’s not for Makerfield to decide who is the UK Prime Minister.
@Flowermanc48Any Burnham problem worth it TO SEE STARMER SUFFER TERRIBLY.
@quadq6598Funny how BBC is not covering the grooming case. 25000 white under aged girles abused... You covered Epstine but not this? Why?

@HonkyReduction-b2gHe can pretend he's upset about leaving Manchester all he wants but I know he put his personal ambition first and therefore has betrayed me and my city and condemned us to the division and hatred of Polanski and Farage
I hope it was worth it Andy you Judas!!!
Hope very much but doubt it
@mariahardy2971C9ngratulations, Labou comming back
@sultanshaikh9742So now we all continue to suffer while they have a civil war and grind the country to a halt.
@count69A vote for no change from the people of Makerfield in this whole choreographed, safe seat instillation. Now take it to the country Andy Pandy.
@commonsense506There is a saying, you can’t polish a turf, the issue is Labour not the leadership. Vote conservative if you care about your future.
@Pequin1000Who will the corrupt BBC support now.
@MuratUysal-lm1xiStarmer, Streeting, Burnham.......I reckon all three should be joint Prime minister as they are pretty much identical to each other - Streeting even looks and talks exactly like Starmer. Burnham at least has a different expression on his face - one of mild confusion. It's going to be a long two years.....
@revol148Of course he'll challenge but the country will still be run by a traitorous labour party.
@Nick-fg2fiThe Road From Wigan Pier
@billgiddings2362Anyone questioned how Burnhams wifes company got the contract to set up the ULEZ infrastructure in Manchester.
@Clem_Fandango11I feel really sorry for BBC. BBC , particularly Laura Kuennesberg, is the biggest supporter of Sir Keir Starmer KC.
@sheikhmuthiah4606And what about the EU seismic shift on immigrants?
@T5ZplayerAnd the Tories won in Aberdeen taking a seat from SNP. Colossal news (but let's not talk about it).
@T5ZplayerFunny they keep saying labour when in this election that party only said Burnham. So i guess the lesson is for a labour win pretending you're not of thier ilk is key.
@vincentbyrd1153Starmer (already a highly confused individual) seems to have upgraded himself in interviews as being both a head of state and president, rather than a leader of the GE winning Labour Party, and therefore the PM. In the UK the electorate vote for political parties not for presidents, Kings, or Queens.
@richardmarsden1897Burnham will become Labours Sunak until an election.
@notjustforhackers4252All aboard Burnham Cruises RMS Titanic. 😅
@ac43942He said his first trip would be to Israel
@Iroh-AVThe silent majority wins !
@OceanTrawler645Labour came 4th in the other two by-elections yesterday. There’s no love for Labour.
@Bungle-UKT'is
Only Proper that Mr.Burnham Is Congratulated on His Magnificent Win now all he has to do is Change the Water into Wine.
That should be easy Word has it a Fella did it at a Wedding back in the Day.
All yours Andrew
BBC no report on the EU parliament vote on migration?
@dotexe55games31Bring on the chaos and division in the Labour party and let it implode....
@ftsetradersteve2742I call it Hollywood
@Sannote-r2iAndy Burnham, never had a job. Never worked hard. Went from university to politics in one easy move. Couldn't be leader so easily became mayor. Decided to be leader and now easily became MP again. He hasn't a clue about US. The political machine steamrollers as always. Same old, same old.
