This has to be the most "American freedom" scene in the history of cinema.

Great movie, but this scene was wholly fabricated and this judge didn't actually exist...

This case was assigned to Judge Andrew Judson. But contrary to what was portrayed in the movie, President Martin Van Buren did not have Judson removed from the case. Judson was a prominent white supremacist who wholeheartedly believed slavery should be legal. So, even if Van Buren wanted to interfere in the judicial process, he wouldn't have done so in this case. Everyone, including Van Buren, was convinced Judson would rule against Cinque and the other Africans because of his white supremacist views. To everyone's surprise, Judson ruled for Cinque, et al.

The case was appealed to the circuit court of appeal -- a part of the proceeding that was completely omitted from the movie. The circuit court of appeal affirmed the judgment in favor of Cinque, et al., as did the Supreme Court.

One of the best movie scenes I´ve ever seen.

I love how this judge was basically put there because they thought he would rule in their favor, but he followed the law and his instincts. He had only a bit part but he won the story.

It is a shame that we do not have honest fair and just judges like this anymore.

Make no mistake, a judge making that verdict in that era (regardless if his decision was inspired by law rather than humanity) was gambling with his life. Slavery and manifest destiny were an immensly risky topic for half a century and politicians were often threatened to make a certain call about it. It really was a powder keg waiting to explode

Great job on acting on the parts of the Amistad kidnap victims(don't want to call them slaves, cause technically they never entered servitude, nor were they born into it). You see some who have started to learn english like Honsou, smile as they figure out what is happening, the bible guy is getting rightfully emotional. Some of the other guys are looking at eachother like "wtf is going on?!" I gotta imagine some were having a smiling wtf face when the spanish guys got arrested like "lets see how you like chains".

Then President Martin van Buren (DEMOCRAT) had to ruin the whole thing.
