9 Best Synthetic Oils (And 5 Worst That RUIN Your Engine)

Video Overview & Insights

Engines don’t die from age; they die from bad oil. Some brands quietly destroy your car long before you hit 100,000 miles. Others protect it like armor. In this breakdown, we reveal the 9 best synthetic oils that keep engines running smoothly and the 5 worst that can slowly damage them.

Before you buy random parts or approve a vague repair estimate, use the Check Engine Confidence Kit to understand what's actually urgent, rule out the cheap fixes first, and ask for the test; not the guess:

After the 80's I'll never use Pennzoil. Absolute Garbage ..

0:00 Intro

I have used Stanley Lubricants on my BMW & Toyota fleets here in UK we service every 8,000 miles. Most of our hire taxi fleets go above 400,000 with the same engine and still smooth and low engine noise. Good oil does matter most of the oil in UK is blended in UK for profit and the formulas end up with low quality oil and expensive because of branding The worse oil is Castrol and Shell just a marketing fad. Best to get oil that is blended in country it’s produced because the oil quality really matters

0:21 Synthetic Oils Worth Buying

0:23 Buy #9: High-Heat Engine Protection

0W weight oil is there for one reason and one reason only. To manipulate the EPA testing regime. by using a super thin oil the internal frricion is reduced and the milage during EPA testing is increased. BUT, It does NOT help enine wear. All tests that have truly measured this stuff shows that it is not as good as oils with a higher base viscosity. Don't use it! Use a 5W or a 10W base viscosity oil. And stick with the known good brands, of which there are many. If it comes from Dollar General only, it is probably not a good bet!

— @cmichaelhoover8432

1:34 Buy #8: Balanced Daily Protection

2:51 Buy #7: Clean Engine Synthetic

I like how you ignore the dexos cert on supertech....

— @kemosabekimboslice2751

4:08 Buy #6: Long-Drain Protection

5:37 Buy #5: Performance Engine Oil

I don't use Valvoline after getting ripped off at one of their oil change places.

— @billp4

6:57 Buy #4: Heavy-Duty Synthetic

8:21 Buy #3: German Engine Protection

When you do a video on oils, probably a good idea to actually show the oil rather than a bunch of random videos of guys playing with cooling hoses. Makes you look like you don't give a crap about your content.

— @myrealname7655

9:54 Buy #2: Diesel-Grade Synthetic

11:28 Buy #1: Maximum Synthetic Protection

i use Walmart Super Tech motor oil - it is APi SQ, iLSAC GF-7A Dexos-1 Gen 3 rated - better than what this video recommends. i meets the highest standards for modern engines at a value price.

— @jtmcculloch

13:29 Synthetic Oils to Avoid

13:34 Avoid #5: No-Name Budget Oil

do you have to stick with just one of those best brands forever or is it safe to switch between them at every oil change

— @CoreCarvn

14:40 Avoid #4: Fake Full Synthetic

15:57 Avoid #3: Missing Oil Certifications

Best one is amsoil, i love that product apart fron valvoline restore and protect i used once to clear my engine from sludge

— @Canadiansingh1111

17:13 Avoid #2: Clearance Shelf Oil

18:24 Avoid #1: Wrong Oil Viscosity

It "IS" because they ARE NOT real 100% synthetic motor oils! At best, they are synthetic "Blends" if that.

— @stillDJs

19:49 Final Synthetic Oil Warning

Oil certifications are at SQ now

More User Perspectives

@

I find it suspicious this video is only 6 months old and uses out of date certifications. The latest API certification is SQ, not SP. and the latest ILSAC certification is GF-7A, not GF-6A.
Also, the warning about High Mileage Full Synthetics seems unsubstantiated. I can find nothing that supports the high mileage full synthetic oils being “watered down” or being blends.

Amsoil Signature Series is THE BEST out of this lineup!!!!

1991 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 with 230k. I have used Amsoil since 10k. I did the compression tests then I switched over to Valvoline Restore and Protect 4 oil changes ago. Probably do a few more oil changes with V R&P and check compression and mileage again. I will be curious as to any changes.

@NormanSilver

Castrol doesn't get black and the bearings look like glass yet it's number #9 😂 oil is oil. Change it every 3000 not this 20k garbage there's no oil that won't break down after 20 thousand miles. Think about payloads, short trips, extreme cold, extreme heat, all those factors. This clown literally used all 9 oils LMAO yeah ok. Bottom line oil is oil. Change it every 3 thousand miles and use a synthetic filter. My 2003 Dodge ram war rig has 175k on it and I use mobil extended performance.

@Mousiemose25

Mobil 1 is the very best

I just changed oil and filter on 24 ram 5.7 because the dealer charges obscene amount.
Fckn filter was leaking ,removed by hand. They use high school skids to do oil changes and charge 420$

Until recently, finding VW compatible oil for my 1.4T 2021 Jetta was a pain. Only 2 companies sold the 0-20 synthetic required for use. Castrol Edge has a compatible oil as do several others. Mobile1 has become hard to find. That's fine as the Castrol costs $3 - $5 less per bottle. I just top off. The dealer does oil changes as my condo doesn't allow such things in our parking lot and my car dealer isn't that bad.

That slight tic is not from worm lifters if it went away it’s carbon otherwise it wouldn’t go away! But the carbon will and yes I use rotela t-6 in all my dd-15 and it out performs deli what we used in the old days to hard on seals in gas engines very high detergent stay away from turbos unless diesel engine

Most mechanics don’t know chemical compounds just hearsay opinions and lack of maintenance failures see what they put in there cars pickups then what do they run in there race cars and-dune buggies motorcycles and diesel engines !

@froby_flingit

Lol ya so it's this easy W means winter 0W means the oil will flow at -40f you go by the temperature you live in tighter tolerance that's just crap!!!!! So all cars trucks use 0-20.. lol that's a JOKE that's for gas ⛽ mpg crap!!!! Why if you look in different countries they recommend the oil viscosity based on temperature..lol ya so live in the desert and go ahead use 0w-20 0 does nothing in high temperature..I use 15-50 -20-50 in everything any car I have ever had never had a engine problem from v,8 to 3 cyl this is a fake robot voice don't believe this crap if you live ware it's cold 10-30 typicaly good enough like I said there a oil temp chart you use oil viscosity by ware you live not from wat they put on the cap ...ya so motorcycles have small oil passages and they use 10-40 and 20-50 ...20w oil is only good until about 75 degrees only for performance ENGINES..lol don't believe any of this crap it's based on temperature not some all the same oil for all cars that's stupid there not smaller tolerances the engine couldn't turn over that's a joke

I don't care wtf approves it, I never go over 4000 miles or past 3 months.
Engine getting 16k over 3 months have degraded oil that's broken down and virtilually useless
Pennzoil Platinun Full Synthetic every 3k miles.

Oil is more than just a commodity — it influences geopolitics, drives economies, and shapes global power structures. Every change in production or price reverberates across industries and countries. To understand oil is to understand the underlying forces that shape the modern world.

I have used Mobile 1 and Quaker State Full Synthetic, usually purchase at Walmart, in all my cars, SUVs, and minivans in the last 35 years. They work perfectly, and all of my vehicles easily hit 200k miles before I sold them or traded in for a new one.
