What timing for this video to come out. I've started getting into homelabbing (turned my laptop into my first server!), and I really want to have some peace of mind with a DAS and some hard drives instead of relying on my laptop's default storage. Started really looking into this yesterday.
Turns out finding reasonably priced 1-2TB drives is trickier than I thought, but hopefully some clever sleuthing will eventually get me there

In my experience, saving a few hundred dollars hunting for deals on hardware is not worth your time if you are serious about building a lab to study for career advancement.
But my perspective is from an older person and I'm lucky to have some disposable income. Young people trade time for money, old people trade money for time.

when looking for older systems, 4th to 6th gen, make sure the computer has a blu-ray drive. you can sell the drive for 40-50€ and those older systems generally cost that much so you get yourself a free pc. i did this once and got a pc with a i5 6600, 240gb ssd and 8gbs of ddr4. the blu-ray drive sold in an hour for 45€ btw :P

In the UK, CeX are often cheaper than eBay for second hand computers and parts. If you order online (even for collection at local store) you get 14 days to return it for any or no reason, plus a reasonable warranty, so it’s minimal risk. Delivery is £2.95 for each item regardless of size and weight. Set up notifications on all variants of whatever you’re looking for and it’ll email when in stock. CeX don’t sell servers or network equipment etc though.

Tip #0: squeeze more out of you already have. I REALLY wanted a new pc so I could repurpose my 10 year old desktop into a home lab. Turns out the gaming laptop I've been sleeping on for the past year is a shockingly good daily driver once I popped in the m.2 from my old desktop.

1:36 Tip Number 1
It's much harder to find deals anymore but I picked up a great deal on eBay yesterday for a new old stock Lenovo ThinkCentre M910 tower. i7-6700, 16GB DDR4 and a 512GB SSD for about $160 CAD (~$115 USD) after shipping and taxes. Thanks for the tip on local ITAD places, but unfortunately I found that none of them in my area sell to the public directly. I found a few local sellers on eBay though that I'm going to keep an eye on.

I got quite good deals on enterprise sata ssds. Bought many at 35-40€ each with a lot of life left in them (at least according to the smart data).
7:45 Tip Number 3
11:06 Tip Number 4
I found an awesome seller of old server's through ebay, he was located pretty close and asked to pick up instead of delivery ( would save him money, saves me the headache of worrying about that heavy thing getting damaged). Turned out to be a super chill guy and he had loads of fun stuff ! (west europe, so these things don't only happen in the US). Best 50euro I ever spent on a dual cpu xeon with 256gb of DDR3 (2 years ago)
13:43 Tip Number 5
I went to an amazon returns bins store (sometimes they get returns from other stores). These stores aren't part of a chain, they all go by different names like "Dealz Finders" and "Bargain Guyz" and other weird, tacky, nondescript names. The one I went to had TWO HP Elitedesks, i7 6700 in each, and they sold me the box (of two of them!) for $15. One had a 256gb sata ssd, the other had a 512gb m.2, I noticed they were packaged with two different random power bricks, and these, I know have kinda finicky power bricks settings. You have to use a specific one, even if the one you plugged in has the right power, it has some feature in the plug to make sure it's the "right" brick. Sure enough, I get them home, there's a blinking light going off, commonly associated with an error from the wrong power brick. So I picked up one power brick specified for it online for $16, and it worked, so I got a second one. So for $47 I ended up with two functioning computer. I took the 512gb m.2 out, put it in an older desktop I have, and plopped in a different 256gb sata ssd I had lying around. For reference, the m.2 alone is now $90 new. Such a good deal.
18:03 Tip Number 6
Recently Ive managed to buy i5 13500TE (new) for $125

Almost a year ago I went online to find deals similar to yours on a thin client and it went great!! I never thanked you. Thanks man.
@matteogiannetto9118Best tip if you live near Connecticut area is to attend cogan pc fairs they have very good deals on old computers and heck the graphics cards are super dirt cheap picked up a good Radeon pro wx4100 for 10.00 dollars worked without any issues at all!
@todoroki_FuwawaAs Bryan used to say - your entry to the recycling centre is sometimes equal a six-pack 😊😊😊😊
@MuadDimAtreidesI work in an ITAD. Unfortunely i'm not allowed to take anything home which makes me very very very very sad. So much stuff getting thrown out that is still in a perfectly good condition. Hard to watch.
@ElusiveSpaceMonkeyMost platforms offer agents, so you get notified if an item, which matches your specifications has just been entered to the listings. So your chances of not missing out on that one are the best!
@arnoldpfusterschmid1108Ive been blessed with my current job. Was able to start my home lab and have since upgraded drastically because of work. In need of drives though 😂
@crodoutdoorsThe most important prerequisite is that you need to live in one of these countries: US, CA, CN, JP, or parts of EU. Try doing these tips in third world countries and you’ll run out of luck, these “junks” or older hardware is imported with a huge import tax and margins before they get sold to the user/customers. 😂 sad truth for us non US, CA, JP, EU, CN citizens
@estehanget695That Dell Vello cloud works out the box with the Opnsense Serial image. You connect to it via USB serial. I have one in my lab. It will output the bios screen and boot over serial TTY. I also have the caswell CAD-263 also uses the serial image. Should be a fun video. :D
@GhostieXVYou forgot the last tip which is be lucky
Great video dude!
Wuddup from Tulsa!! Any tips on a good spot around me? Electronic synergy foundation looks promising, but i haven't had a chance to go check it out!
@bearudl09Some good deals I have gotten in recent years has been open box Microcenter items. Things like the motherboard for my previous system, to my current NAS and even my gpy were open box and pretty significant price reductions. Matter of fact my daily driver macbook air was an open item Best Buy computer.
Obvously these deals aren't always good, I have seen some really trash open box prices when looking at stuff. Patience helps a lot here.
The other thing is being flexible. An example for me was my current GPU, its nothing fancy but works fine. I was flexible though because the Intel ARC card I picked up new, ran like garbage with my PC no matter what I did so I ended up returning it. Then I found a 3060 12gb for less than the Intel card I was returning so it ended up working out. Not being laser focused on a specific piece of hardware or even setup has saved me a ton over the years. (Obviously sometimes a specific item is absolutely needed)
There are definitely great deals out there. I recently bought a Lenovo M90q gen 5 i5-13600T 32Gb RAM DDR-5 for £430.00 warranty until 2028. Lenovo M720Q i3 8100T 8gb ram £85
@balex96Patience is a big thing when buying hardware. I just updated part of my home network and decommissioned my old edge router x sfp and two dell servers I sold for cheap. So don’t inpatient with the buying process.
@bobdan9856As one the 8% over 55, I am by no means a grandma, i have a home lab and build custom pc,s. To refer to everyone over 55 in that way is offensive. I know many people over 50 that have levels of IT knowledge much more than most of the 30 and 20 somethings I know. My advice is to not be so quick to think you know so much.
@vipertt100"the more you buy the more you safe!!!"
@RetroVGamingZonesometimes you can get lucky on gov deals... buy a pallet of 50 dell micros or HP minis... for 100 bucks. they were i7 version as well.
Also when MicroSock announced Windows 11 not supporting older CPUs... 10/10 best time to buy tons of mini/micro/tiny computers... Tons of them flooded as company's updated.
8:03 Propane and propane accessories
@PrmanentlyConfusedWork at a company that’s about to bankrupt would be a good choice.. 😂😂😂😂
@SoraIroNaKISEKIi got a HDD from the PS4 Slim that i got from my scraps, i decided to upgrade my home server with it
@italiatroller4793There used to be a Goodwill near me that was a major hub for old computers. They would refurbish them and sell them with a fresh load of the OS the manufacturer sold them with. They had enough bad motherboards to ship to recycle-rs by the pallet. They let me go through the pallets and I would give them $0.50 per board that I thought I could repair. This was when many boards had bad capacitors. Unfortunately, a certain software company didn't like they way they refurbished the computers and they got shut down. Much harder to find hardware than it was in the 2000s, (and harder to repair it).
@charliewatson3202One thing I've done is to buy things, locally or on eBay, that contain a part I want, and then sell the rest of it off in pieces. It's easier these days with the out of control ram and storage prices. But it there is a good time investment in that, and sometimes you get screwed. I think in the end it's still worth doing if you truly don't have the money to spend, but if you're sitting cozy and just want to be a frugal, then don't bother. Life is too short.
There are other hacks I have that have served me well, but I think might gatekeep those because I don't want to ruin it for myself.
turns out there is an ITAD place maybe 2 miles from my house.
but I don't see any indication that they sell anything.
On my way back home after a shift, I never go straight to home but take a few rounds at the scrap yard to find something and I did find things which are more expensive to buy from the shop.
I even found ram and hdd
My company just gives away office chairs with 20 years worth of marinated butt juice, hard pass.
@zeroturn709110:11, this this is my fav since i was able to find out with the knowledge of the it guy, and my seniors on the club we are in that theres e waste, i was able to find while a majority where broken some where still packing good stuff i found myself 12x8gb ddr4 2400mhz sadly its sodimm, and many laptops, also one of the seniors gave me 22 m93p for FREE which is pretty crazy even if they are low specs they are pretty good, and another senior gave me 1 6tb hdd, 1 3tb hdd, and 3 2tb hdds, plenty of 2.5” 1tb and 500gb hdds if you can i recommend asking around your school
@AugustusPhilippeSMandacHello from me, a subscriber of your channel who's over 65
@ChristopherHaileyebay and facebook marketplace have also been crazy, got a R730 with some extra for $45 ;)
Be sociable with people on some of these listings and a lot of them, especially ITADs can cut you good deals and will throw in some sick extras too!
I've gotten some good deals from my local PC repair shop where people bring stuff in and then don't wanna pay to get it fixed and the guy just gets told to keep it and he calls me at this point when he gets something in that he thinks I might be interested in
@cavemanstechgaming9811A friend of mine has a business where he purchases second hand IT hardware from auctions. He services/restores the items and then sells them to small businesses or individuals who could never have justified the expense of the hardware if new. One of his main purchases are large format printers that are worth $10-20k and sells them for $5k. His garage is always got hardware siting in it waiting to be fixed, sold, delivered, or picked up.
@darrenyorstonI really like your presentation and editing, as well as the music you've chosen. I wish you the best! - Hello from Russia
@VolnovKonfachI am looking to build a nas with a 10gb nic. No I'm not on drugs. 🤔
@MrEric377Hey @HardwareHaven what’s the best way to reach out to you? I have something you may be interested in
@gaegesmith235Ok, I love the "Electric computer" advert 😂
@TheQuickSilver101There were some great tips here. I'll be trying some of these. Thank you, sir!
@TheQuickSilver101Yes indeed, the only thing is add is if your time is valuable or you can't, I dunno, eBay on the clock, spending a little extra for the thing you want just means you don't have to wait ya know?
@pharmdiddy5120Wild stuff, ECO in the city is amazing, bit of drive for me thought.
@AutomaticGaming.My pop always told me "if something seems too good to be true, then 👋🤒🤚"
