I for one, am tired of hearing this ridiculous old saw that crops up in so many outdoor.based stories that are trying to be scary. Every time the trope shows up in a tale, it indicates that the author 1) has very little outdoor experience; 2) is repeating nonsense he has heard in other online stories, and; 3) the story in question is likely to be fiction. The woods sometimes go silent. This is a purely random occurrence. It does not indicate the presence of a predator. The only animals that go silent in the presence of any specific predator are those which are the natural prey of said predator. Other animals that are not the natural prey of said predator are more likely to sound the alarm than to go silent when a predator is near. Squirrels will chitter, jays will squawk, crows will caw, and ravens will croak--- all from the safety of their perches in the forest canopy. This is a natural warning system deeply ingrained within the pan-species forest social networks. Animals are very intelligent, particularly squirrels and corvids. Animals are known to display altruism, especially those more intelligent members of the forest community. I dare say they care about their other forest brethren, so long as those are not predators upon their own kind. Though corvids have few natural predators, and squirrels are likely specifically sounding the alarm to warm members of their own kind who are on the ground. So let's delete the stories put out by inexperienced copyists. Real outdoor people do not find these stories entertaining or frighting, only foolish, tedious, and boring.

My German girlfriend asked me to camping in the 80’s in west Germany then..
Off we went into the wilderness, me the man, I thought even do I never camped before and she put up the tent.
Anyway, off to sleep we went after few beers.
Suddenly, I got woke up by these loud bang,echoing off valley we were camped in, then jet noises, helicopters flew past, the armed type.
I was wondering what tf is going on, then I saw hugh military trucks belting across countryside and decided to wake girlfriend as a war appeared to be happening around us.
Girlfriend just shrugged and said must be a nato training exercise, 1 of the trucks had stoped and raised its launchers, Pershing nuclear missile launcher girlfriend said..
I was terrified, you cannot imagine the noise and seeing low flying fighter jets on full thrust, helicopter gunships too..
My first and last time camping….

Honestly, shoutout to the 3rd teacher who didn’t actually see the suspicious men but still called the police just in case, rather than blowing it off as “kids seeing things.” Probably saved some lives that night

I can confirm that a lot of strange, creepy, scary shit happens in Utah and the legends are true I’ve had quite a few experiences that I wouldn’t mind sharing if you’re interested it’s quite cathartic to get it off my chest. I now live in North Dakota about 50 miles from the Canadian border near where the Algonquin tribes were and idc if you believe me or not but wendigos and Skinwalkers, ugh I really don’t like saying their names so I call them flesh pedestrians and wedonotgos haha but anyway, they are very, very real along with other cryptids and saying they are nightmarish is a huge understatement! So yeah have plenty of stories to share not only my own but family, friends even strangers and only a couple had good or positive outcomes so if anyone is interested I’ll submit them to you because I’d love to hear you narrate them. I usually love all the stories but the one about sand dunes and the dad pulling a “prank” on the kid and his stepmom actually pisses me off. That story wasn’t funny nor was it cute, it was just sad. The details he gives about them fighting all the time and about his life are just depressing. It seems like the author doesn’t even realize he grew up in a pretty abusive situation. That’s just not a story I ever want to hear again to be quite honest.
