Samsung 4K HDR DEMO QLED Q Black Party in black
So I decided to watch some HDR demos. So I dimmed the lights, put the video in fulscreen and sat back.
All nice and everything, really creative video. But who, the actual duck, decided had that bright idea to end this predominantly dark video with a full blast white screen?! It's not even just paper white, it's full-blast HDR white. Getting flashbanged like this was literally painful and dizzying.
I don't know if it was expected for ABL to kick in on that scene, so it was just sent to full blast presuming the display would dim down to a reasonable level - but mine didn't, as I was watching in a mode without dynamic processing. And while my screen is "only" VESA TrueBlack 400, so it has relatively low brightness compared to TVs, when viewed in a dark room, IT STILL HURT!
Dear Samsung, please, for the love of our retinas, don't do this again. Go with a white logo on a black background next time, please 🙏

But sadly it's only HDR10 (8-bit + PQ EOTF):
YouTube typically encodes HDR videos as 8-bit with a 10-bit Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) curve, sometimes referred to as “8-bit HDR.”
This essentially compresses 10-bit information into 8-bit containers, which can limit subtle color gradations and may introduce banding.
Bitrate: ~35–68 Mbps for 4K HDR at 60fps.
Codec: VP9 (HDR) or AV1 (HDR, increasingly common).
In other words, it’s effectively 8-bit HDR upscaled, rather than genuine 10-bit.
