The use of kilometres squared is apparently an English misunderstanding of what it means. Point A to point B is measured in kilometres. Kilometres squared is a measure of area(i.e., 10km squared is 100 square kilometres).
I don't know where this error comes from, as I had gained this knowledge by age 12. Looks like from a very bad education system.
