Just subscribed suitcase monkey. Just back from my honeymoon in Indonesia, where your Lombok guide was particularly helpful (I'd been to Bali before) and am off for a break in Porto for my wife's birthday later in the year and lo and behold, it's you again with the best video and really useful PDF. Cheers!

*Douro Wine Tasting Trip we went on:*

One thing about the Douro Valley that surprises most visitors: the terraced vineyards were carved by hand over centuries — there was no machinery that could work those slopes. The schist stone walls holding the terraces were built without mortar. They've survived floods, frost, and heat for hundreds of years through pure engineering and gravity.

The rabelo boats (flat-bottomed barrels boats you see at the Cais da Ribeira) were how port wine was transported from the valley to the lodges in Gaia. The Douro rapids made it one of the most dangerous river journeys in Europe. The wine industry literally shaped the entire geography of northern Portugal — the terraced landscape you see in the valley exists because of wine, not nature.

Livraria Lello is worth the queue but go before 10am. The €5 entry is redeemable against any purchase. The 1906 building is Art Nouveau and genuinely one of Europe's most beautiful bookshops.

I see your videos when they come out - but anytime I travel I check if you've been there - and Porto came up.. Our intentions were completely derailed - however, the one thing that was spot on was the street performers - waaaay better than they needed to be!! Hopefully we'll be able to enjoy the city when we go again!

this is i guess the official list of cliche tourist traps. but no doubt, the queen of all tourist traps is that majestic caffe. the combination of unreasonably high prices with mediocre food - wins.

Thanks for this. It's a lot more informative than the usual me-me-me videos that are supposed to be about Porto. The takedown of the tourist trap bookshop was great, and after hearing that "the foot can still provide greater control over a wine's taste", I might lay off the port a bit when I'm there. 😄 WOW also seems overpriced, maybe worth a wander through but skipping the "museums". And if the weather plays along, a Jardim do Morro sunset will be a must.

I agree with others I did not like Lisbon as there was lot of traffic we got stuck sometimes for two hours in the evenings. Traffic is terrible and bumper to bumper with stop and go situation. Porto seems to be better. Your Douro road trip looks beautiful and worth a shot. We spent almost a month in the most beautiful Algarve Portugal and you should visit next time , check it out. Cheers ❤

Thank you very much for your helpful video. My wife and I did 10 days in Porto and your advice was very helpful. We did the Douro Valley tour with your alternate recommendation and had a blast. We bought the Porto Card and Adante travel card for 3 days. This was a no brainer for us. We checked out the museums that it got us in for free and used it for the discounts elsewhere. The Adante card was really helpful. We stayed a bit north of the main tourist area and had a Metro stop that was 5 minutes from our hotel so we again got our monies worth. One thing that I didn't follow was either your channel or another said to scan the card at the end of the ride. I didn't see others scanning their cards so we didn't. It didn't appear to make a difference. Again, thank you for your video and document.

Great video, as usual. qq - i am a bit short on time (9 days) but want to spend time in Lisbon, Porto and Madiera. Between Lisbon and Porto, would it make sense if i spend more time in Porto than Lisbon ? I love nature more compared to buildings and architecture.

What airport did you fly into?

When you say things like "Not too expensive" to describe a room or meal, specifics would be helpful. That room looks like it's $400 a night.

Safe to say Rowling talks a lot of sh!t and I absolutely don’t believe that someone lived there for 2y, wrote in a cafe there, and did not visit one of the coolest bookstores in the world. She’s such a POS.

For anyone considering visiting Porto, I recommend that you avoid Café Majestic, as it is a tourist trap. If you are interested in a historical art deco café, that has been restored and reopened to the decor that it had in the 1920's, try A Brasileira. Also expect it to be packed with people, although, the prices aren't anywhere the entrapment you'll encounter in Majestic. Another more afordable option, albeit a bit more recent, is confeitaria do Bolhão (not as high end as the other 2 options I mentioned, but an historical café, and a quite interesting one at that). In another part of the city, you might consider also Petulia, near in Rua Julio Dinis.

I left my heart in Porto❤️ Such a special city and the proximity to Braga, Guimerais and Coimbra is a big plus. I loved Lisbon too but it was more touristy and crowded.

Question: if we go to Europe for the first time, do you recommend us go to Lisbon and Porto, Lisbon and Madeira or Lisbon and Barcelona? So hard to decide. Is Lisbon and Porto so alike with each other? Or both worth the time
