2002 Panoz LMP 07 (LMP900 Class) Prototype in Action: Mugen 4.0L V8 Sound, Accelerations & Fly Bys!
Video Overview & Insights
The Panoz LMP07 may not have been the best prototype project but it's certainly one of the most eye-catching car to see in action on track. It was built and developed by Élan Motorsport Technologies in late 2000 for competing in the American Le Mans Series under the LMP900 regulations.
I don't think I could compose myself in a paddock with the Panoz LMP AND the McLaren. 😂😂😅
The car was meant to be a successor to the Panoz LMP-1 Roadster-S which had competed since 1999 and was designed by Reynard Motorsport. Although retaining the unusual front-engine format, the LMP07 was quickly found to be lacking the capabilities of its predecessor, forcing Panoz to abandon it and return to the LMP-1 Roadster-S which was further developed into the LMP 01 Evo, before being retired at the end of 2003.
For the development of the LMP07, Élan Motorsport turned to Zytek for construction of a custom V8 for the LMP07, replacing the Ford-derived V8 used in the LMP-1 Roadster-S. The aim behind the new car was to attempt to get the its center of gravity as low as possible in order to improve its handling capabilities.
never knew there was a flat plane panoz
As said before, following the performance troubles of the LMP07 in 2001, Panoz decided that the cars need to be reworked in order to remain competitive as well as durable. The decision to bring back the LMP-1 Roadster-S was made, completing the season with the older cars while work continued on the LMP07s. By the end of the year, it was decided that it would be easier to upgrade the existing LMP-1s instead of attempting to fix the LMP07s. The three chassis built were therefore sold off to privateer teams for their own use.
MBD Sportscar would purchase two chassis for the 2002 season. Technical responsibilities were given to Multimatic who made many changes to the 07s including swapping the Zytec unit with a Mugen MF408S V8 engine. Debuting at Sebring, the two cars would continue their difficulties, including one car catching fire. For the rest of the season although the cars were more reliable, the LMP07-Mugens would only be able to finish better than the factory upgraded LMP01 Evos on one occasion. The one you see in this video is chassis 03 which was also entered by MBD for the 2002 24 Hours of Le Mans but once again it failed to finish the race. The LMP07s would be retired from competition with no other teams wishing to purchase the cars.
Moi 55 ans, prendre le départ de cette voiture mythique aux couleurs de Iron dames : oui
C’est une Panoz
C’est une voiture de course qui m’a toujours passionné
Nodays, thanks to championships like Endurance Racing Legends which aims to bring together GTs and prototypes from the 1990s and 2000s, these interesting cars are coming out of their forced hibernations. In this video you can see chassis 03 being driven at Mugello Circuit and Circuit Paul Ricard during this year's Mugello Classic and Dix Mille Tours historic racing weekends by Peter Auto!

This engine just sounds incredibly pissed off
@jptothetreeawesome the engine
@wahyuardiansyah1266Wow - is it ever missing that V8 thunder that I remember with these cars…
@TAFORTHInteresting, I thought all the Panoz cars were powered by a Ford V8......🤔
@Gavs_rc_hobbiesTurn it up that engine 😍🔉🔊 awesome machine thanks Bozzy ❤️
@nicolafox9452Nice. I saw this in it's original configuration at Texas and Sebring in 2001 and like it is here at Sears Point in 2002.
@motorin25nice car
@ryanh9262I really liked the Panos looks .
@rontribbey9038LMP900 was underrated as hell. That class had some incredibly weird and super capable cars. This, the Cadillac Northstar LMP, the Dallara SP1, the crazy Judd V10 privateers (too many to name, I think), the plucky Panoz LMP1 Roadster-S, the iconic Pescarolos, the Ferrari 333 SP, the BMW V12 LMR, the all-conquering Audi R8 LMP, and the "queen without a crown" Toyota TS020.
Y'know how the Group 7 sportscars (GT40, 330 P4, 917K, 512M etc.) became such icons that their equally cool and, in some cases, even more capable Group 6 successors (312 PB, MS670, A442B, 936) just sort of get overlooked? I think that might be the case here, too. LMP900/LMGTP had a long, relatively great run, but is pretty much forever cursed to live in the shadow of the prototype class that immediately preceded it - Group C.
The parallels don't even stop there - both classes kinda got their thunder stolen by crazy GT cars right before or as they showed up. Group 6 had to coexist with Group 5 (Zakspeed Capri, 935), and LMP900 had to coexist with GT1 (CLK-GTR, R390).
The 90's were fucking wild. I think the only thing stopping the LMP900s from being the centerpiece of a golden era of sportscar racing was the fact that, thanks to the machinations behind the death of Group C, there literally WASN'T a World Sportscar Championship for them to race in.
Actually, credit where it's due - whoever wrote the ruleset that gave rise to LMP900 did such a good job that, after GT1 imploded, these cars pretty much brought the concept of a worldwide sportscar championship straight back from the dead. That class, by dint of its amazing success in the 90's and early 00's, is singlehandedly responsible for the creation of the Le Mans Series, and by extension the series that came after it......
I think we might have this strange, ugly Panoz, its predecessor, and their contemporaries to thank for the existence of the modern-day World Endurance Championship. Or maybe my sanity's slipping. Could be either.
Never known one to use the mugen v8
@idrivedriveawagonA reminder that they put this engine into a Honda Legend
@MrCarGuyOh... Mugen.
The Ford V8s sounded much better though. Still a beautiful representation of early 2000s LMP.
Thank you 😷
Hmm… Interesting V8 sound. Pretty cool.
@lkyksb3thank you for singling out this car! this is my favorite Panoz because its so unusual
@Dogman36Always great to see a Panoz
Bozzy QUALITY 👍👍
Learnt something here today. I'd always thought that all the Panoz LMP were Ford powered. Maybe it was just the later ones. Or maybe its just my memory misfiring !!
@harrypotter4309Impresionante y sexy es el sonido de ese V8. Es una orquesta mecánica!!! Likes Bozzy!!!!
@JavierOrtiz-xq3toencore un superbe reportage ...quelle auto ! grand merci bozzy 👍👍👍👍
@mpsimonfulsheesh what a sound
@javierrosadojr.6379Best sounding race car ever
@MatrixDiscoveryWOW!
@toms5ohAs soon as I heard that Mugen power I was a bit disappointed because I remember seeing this car in the old ALMS series and the sound from that big V8 Ford would shake the ground as it roared by.
@rudfil無限!!
@1983suzukacityAnother great symphony!
@ricarquitectura4857The Panoz LMP07 was a car so bad they went back to the old car, and performed better.
@NickG40When race cars were more interesting.
@Brookspiritn/a glory days
@nurburgrindingCiao Bozzy, questa è una delle più strane Sport Prototipi mai viste, 👍
