2 PERFECT DAYS IN YORK: History, Hidden Gems & Things to Do

Video Overview & Insights

If you're looking for the best of York, then you've come to the right place. In this travel guide, we'll showcase the best things to do in York, including top attractions, where to eat, and hidden gems even locals don't know about. We'll also explore the top Christmas Markets in York, and take a day trip to the Spa Town of Harrogate, which is around half an hour away.

Spent my birthday in 2003 at York โค Was a student of University of Hull then. Fond memories... Thank you ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—

โ€” @dipanjan3108

York is steeped in history and has been the favourite haunt of many royals and nobles over the years. The city began as a Roman fortress around two millennia ago and today vestiges of the past can be found down the cobbled lanes and amongst the timber-framed buildings.

๐ŸŽ Visiting the Christmas markets this season? ๐ŸŽ My brand new guide book is all about the best Christmas markets in Europe, now available on Amazon and in digital format.

Thanks for all the great tips! I can always count on you to find the best vegetarian restaurants in any city -- a real service to veggies like us.

You should really learn how to pronounce place names.
It's the river Ouse (pronounced ooze).
Pity you skipped knaresborough, it's a charming market town and has the world's oldest tourist attraction, mother shiptons petrifying well.

โ€” @richardkennedy7104

- York City Walls

- Roman sites

Thank you for the lovely video of my home town. I really enjoyed it. Just 2 tiny criticisms. The river Ouse is pronounced like the word ooze. Also JK Rowling denied being inspired by the Shambles. It was the filmmakers who were inspired by the street. Great video.

โ€” @francesaggarwal22

- The Shambles

- Yorkshire's Winter Wonderland

So beautiful eurupe country โคโคโคโค

Nice but a few things wrong... firstly there have been archaeological finds of prehistoric people using the area, so the Romans weren't the first there... the story about being allowed to maim Scots is thought to be a myth and if it did exist it only existed on a small island at the confluence of the Rivers Foss and Ouse, not really the city centre... speaking of the Ouse it's pronounced Ooze not Owse.

My preferred place to eat in York is at home.
Lol, my next door neighbour is a Scot. I haven't used a bow and arrow on him yet! I'm part Scots myself and have Scots names.
Those narrow snickleways are said to be the favourite hunting ground of the barghest, a large black infernal hound which preys on the unwary such as drunks. It also wanders the moors to the North of the city. Its legend inspired the famous "Hound Of The Baskervilles" Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, another Scot (with Irish ancestry).
This video is about the very "touristy" side of the city.

I visited York in May 2025 from London. I stayed there for two nights before returning back to London. I would say that it was a memorable trip though I did not have the time to visit any of the museums nor did I see the minster from inside. I took a walking tour and I also took a river cruise in the evening. I am from India.
