This video shows my 1st arrival in Taipei, Taiwan and my honest first impressions of Taiwan. I landed in Taipei for the very first time and began my journey from the airport into the city, trying to figure out how to get to my hotel, exploring the streets, and tasting Taiwanese food along the way. My goal was to experience Taiwan, to see how people live here, how the city feels, how the transportation works, and whether Taipei is as unique as so many travelers claim.

Taiwan surprised me immediately. From the airport, through the busy metro system, to the first food I tried in Taipei. Taiwan has come a long way since my childhood in the 70's. There was no MRT in TPE. To go from TPE to KSG, we had to take diesel locomotives, which included transfer, took most of the day to arrive. On occasion, I would see steam locomotive still operating. I remember the ladies coming around with their neck strap concession trays selling candies, cigarette and other treats to riders. The trains were loud and rickety with no air conditioning. You're lucky to have been born much later in a world that offers such comfort and convenience. Many Taiwanese now speak English as well to be able to assist international travelers, as it has become such an international attraction. Taiwan infrastructure has now surpass my adopted hometown of Queens, NY. Though I love the convenance of Taiwan, I find it too hot for me these days for much of the year. NYC summers may be unbearable without air conditioning, but the diversity that I've grown so accustom in Queens has become something I find difficult to live without. Taiwan though is still deep in my heart.

Your check-in host was wearing a Halloween pumpkin headband. Taiwan is often influenced by American culture, so the pumpkin headband may be a sign of Halloween which falls on Oct 31st.

How pleased I am to see the changes. I worked in several cities in Taiwan in the very early 70s. Each time a contract expired I swore never to go back. The filth and stench had to be experienced to be believed. Rats, rats everywhere. Including restaurants and hotel rooms. Seeing this is a great pleasure

I would say Taiwan is definitely a country,we have all the elements of a sovereign state, even if China's pressure keeps us from being globally recognized. Whether our name is the ROC or Taiwan, I hope we forever preserve our democracy and freedom.
Personally, I don't identify as Chinese.
Despite our challenges, Taiwan is an incredibly safe, convenient, and warm place to live. I love Taiwan and hope it forever stays Taiwan.

The price of hotel in Taiwan are very expensive in common
@chiggaAsiaThe Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China (PRC) are two completely different countries. The PRC wants to annex Taiwan and proclaims to the world that Taiwan is part of the PRC. In fact, most countries know that Taiwan is not part of the PRC. Because the PRC is a larger country, most countries can only recognize the PRC and are forced not to recognize Taiwan!

@peacockpaula4723Hope you had a wonderful time in Taiwan, there's a local brand chain beverage store called 50嵐 and it's right next to the 711 you visited in 中山Zhongshang. I recommend getting a bubble tea there, it's one of the most iconic and local things we Taiwanese do!
The Milkshop you went to is also a great place to get delicious bubble tea, but they got canceled recently since they call Taiwan as 'China Taiwan' in their campaign in China.
And just a friendly reminder, we call China as 'China' instead of 'Mainland China' since Taiwan is not part of China, calling China as 'Mainland China' is like we are part of it.

@diameter3Your comments in the video are very kind and I think you are actually pretty easy to please. The food in Taipei is amazing. I think any restaurant or food stand with a line is a good sign. Google Maps is a very good tool to find good restaurants in your area. I hope you will have another chance to visit Taiwan. Da’an is another popular area in Taipei with a big park and Din Tai Fung flagship store near by. I recommend you to check out Raohe night market and Jiufan during your next trip. Bon Voyage!
