19-Year-Old ROGER FEDERER defeats King Of Wimbledon (2001)
Video Overview & Insights
Federer, just 19 years old at the time, faced Sampras in the fourth round of Wimbledon. At the time, Sampras was considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time and had won seven Wimbledon titles, setting a tournament record.
one legend is being replaced by the future legend
The victory over Sampras represented a generational shift in tennis. Sampras was considered the dominant player of the 1990s, and his defeat of the young Federer marked the beginning of a new era in the sport.

Bro looks all of 35 years old. You can convince me he beat the best but you can't convince me he was 19
@zackwilloughby9185They both have a similar backhand technique, old school. I admit, it's great to watch. I remember these tennis legends with nostalgia, watching them back in the day.
@Peterd0eThe best two tennis players ever!
@cedriclai6461pure tennis, no drama no screams and grunts
@ChaiPaniiGrazy to think only couple months from this event and world completely changed
@Wilsson02There is no comparison with actuels player level (Sinner, Alcaraz, …….), we was on another planet 🌏…
@landstalkerreda5507Сампрас добр настолько , насколько федерер зол, это очевидно
@ОлегХаустов-м6вgreat playing!! classic players, salute both of you
@sherbaraiLong hair fed was so raw. Such a fun watch even though prime fed was truly and evolved court monster.
@MP-oj9tkCel mai talentat și elegant jucător din toate timpurile!
@thinking1995TKweird how in tennis, 19 seems to be the age when a young tennis player defeats an aging tennis player, sampras did it to lendl when he was 19, and here he is losing to a 19 year old. what goes around, comes around.
@archangelmusic13Federer beat a 29-year-old Sampras who was suffering from a blood disorder called thalassemia beta, who hadn't won a tournament in 12 months, who wouldn't win a tournament for another 14 months, and who fell to 12th in the ATP rankings after his points from the previous Wimbledon dropped off.

Only the noise of some aircrafts disturbing the JOY to watch this ! Absolutely stunning ! The time of Roger, Rafa and a "Joker" starts and IT was more then a decade of best TENNIS ever. ❤ Thank You Guys ... and okay, thank You Pete too 😇😉
@maikpaulu4164In the first 2 games, you can see why they slowed things down at Wimbledon. Though I personally have no problem with aces from brilliant servers or quick serve and volley points, not everyone likes that. Some feel cheated, prefer hard court and clay. But they don't want to speed up the clay courts... ? "Victory... Tenacious"... Here lies the genius of Laver, Borg and Rafa! Djokovic too. It was like 2 different games...
@apusistaI think the reason why this sport is dying so rapidly is because athletes have min-maxed the game (a long, long time ago) to the point that there's no puzzle anymore. It's solved. You cannot reliably predict a serve. The ball could come to where you're going, or it could not. If you happen to be wrong with your guess, you lose. This is displayed like 60 times in a row in this very video, by the most renowned tennis professionals on earth. Neither one has a remote chance of reacting to each other's serves.
Why is this entertaining to anyone?
This game isn't about skill. It's like pulling the lever on a slot machine. No one cares about sports like this anymore because the original premise is stupid.
Tennis has come such a long way, so many unforced errors that would be considered sub par play in today's world of tennis. Still, we are watching the greats. Very entertaining.
@zachstepp8065Watch how Federer serves here and how he's worked on his service motion to perfection in the coming years
@ambalavanantThis was actually the first match of Federer that I saw live on TV and had never heard of him before
@ambalavanantFEDERER really dominated here. he gifted Sampras the 2nd set, and went on a deserved winner.
@llewellynGS1.. and then he lost to Henman . Oops !
@Kowalski-717Pete was never physically the same after his herniated disk in his lower back in 1999 causing him to get pain shots even to play. He withdraw from the U.S. Open that year.
@2badger2Now you have guys like Ben Shelton serving 150 mph
@chrishough5834What a graceful champion Sampras was. So calm and understated.
@AnilSharma-gb3kjAnd He became the king of wimbledon❤❤
@anitdaniel4125Had forgotten how boring grass court tennis had become in the 90s - with fast balls, poly strings and graphite racquets. Is so much better to watch these days!
@GuidossInnitTheir serves are so strong it's honestly a bit boring. It's not returned half the time...
@hvdveerhe look like handsome version of erling halaand
@mantapjiwa16165That point at 33:17 broke the mike. And how Roger stood there with his hands behind his back. That was awesome.
@JanŘehák-y7tPete Sampras was really that guy that popularized that forehand volley? WT actual F. Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe--serve and volley half volley gods before Sampras. And those were just the Americans between 1970-90. What about the rest of the S&V champs....wow. Some of the Worst commentating--American Tennis suffered under bad sports coverage even when we were on top.
@patrickpreston8327Les deux avec un revers à une main. Extraordinaire!!!
@alainb5948I can't recall a tennis player as boring as Pete Sampras.
@prokastinatoreI like this video, but please in the future don't tell who won in the title, I want the suspense.
@bd555Pete and Roger - my two favorite players - but I am a bit deferential to the single handed backhand. You can throw Justine Henin in there too.
@Spanky-xu9diこの頃はプロスタッフ全盛期だった。
Wilsonではなくプロスタッフ。
Interesting watching a legend and a future legend playing. ❤
@mmckenzie8085This right here was the turning point to the golden age of tennis until 2024 when it was all over
@GdRiskyPlaneThe pinnacle of Serve & Volley era
@krid8760I never seen this level of tennis's in my life😮😍🤐❤
@arjungamingyt7946An aging Pete and up and coming Federer and it was close to the very end. Really just leaning on their idividual serve game until the end.
@FiendallHow well they play the game of tennis.
@JohnnyTrader-ln3wuThis is when Roger became the king of Wimbledon
@mickeydrago94019:02 his fast serve 121mph
@Mizzen3I know this magch happened but its still odd seeing them on court together.
@BlueAversionAmazing how tennis has evolved in 2026 where rallies are won thru the baseline. Back in the days it was actually serve and volley who dictate the game.
@andrewdonaireThese first serves gotta be the real deal here! Your serve and you win. I noticed that in this era, backhand wasn't fully developed yet as sharp as today. Federer introduced it. Samrpas wasn't too sharp at the time.
@AmerkussainBAliThat was amazing, thank you!!
