Seriously listen to him on the wrist thing. I play guitar and piano and would overextend my left wrist on piano playing octaves (which is common on piano) and wouldnt listen to my body when my wrist was in pain. Eventually it got really bad and I could barely use it for weeks, not just for instruments but anything. Thankfully it was temporary, but listen to your body it'll tell you when its too much. If you really need to push yourself theres stretches and exercises you can do to work your muscles up to being able to do most things safely with proper technique. I am young and in very good health and I still wasnt safe from my wrist giving out when I didnt listen to it.

#1 and #12 contradict each other. Also, playing something 4 times in a row and now you've mastered something? 😂😂

This info is very useful. I've been struggeling with all those issues to get it right. I really have the feeling that I'm not making progress. Definetely gonna focus on the things mentioned in this video. Thanks a lot!

Every tutorial says to put your thumb behind the neck, but every single person I see has it on top when playing. Riddle me that

when you use a metronome, how does it help with your timing? Do you just switch cords every click?

@I43_tennis
@

自然にそうしてしまうのですが、皆さんて首をひねったり親指の位置がネックの上にっていたりするし、それでとても上手に弾かれるので僕もよくはわからなくなっていました。ありがとうございます。

Which model Fender Telecaster is that with 3 pickups?

another good tip for beginners, light touch with your picking. if on electric. it doesn't take much to make it sing. However if you strum hard for no reason it reduces your speed and your strings will hate you, will also detune your guitar if you strum to hard frequently. Yes there is a place for hard strumming but that's in dynamics and that's a bit of a advanced lesson but i think all beginners should learn a light touch first.

I was never taught to use a metronome. I have had some bad guitar teachers going back to 1990.
I have learned more from this video than I ever learned when I first started guitar.
I like how he pointed out to make sure you play something correctly and correct mistakes early. Once they become habit it is hard to correct them.
Quality over quantity is something to remember when practicing guitar

I’m 75. I took a few in person lessons when I was 22 but quit because I was intimidated and overwhelmed. Now I have lots of time to learn again. And with so many Youtube instructors, I’m much more motivated and confident and can learn at my own pace and can choose the right instructor for me. Your approach is simple and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in a way that someone my age can follow.

I can play pretty well, Like I can nail Lebrontron... But the thing is I pretty much always play like I'm soloing, except for the one fast riff in Lebrontron, and other bucket head stuff like the 3 5 7 part in Soothsayer, I don't do it for some reason...

I've forced myself to play killing cone like that, but it's slower

@Henry-bd6ls

More important than the first one is your overall posture. Hunching over the guitar over years and years will fk you up worse than some elbow or wrist tendinitis

@darkskinwhite
@

Metronome or drum machine does help. If you can get access to a human drum machine (aka drummer), you and the drummer will get a lot better quickly

Got tired of crazy people hooking everywhere so I decided why not learn guitar. Used to learn cello back in school when all the popular kids had the violin

My metronome dream is to watch someone use a metronome through a couple of songs that have some rhythm changes.

I am so with you on the strumming hand anchoring. My guitar teacher is totally opposed to it, but it’s really the only way I’ve been able to play, especially pick, with any accuracy.

I just started and I find it extremely hard to stop my thumb from moving all around when trying to play chords. For example, when I play c and g major my thumb completely curls up and goes sideways, and I feel like I can’t reach the strings without that happening. It hurts too

thank you so much for the great advice! and excellent presentation

Good advice. I've played guitar since 1961 and I'm still on the quest to "get good"!

The biggest issue in guitar, to be honest, as someone who has learned 6 chords on my own and strummed along with songs, is the chord hands. The fingers are so close to one another you unconsciously—if you follow any guitar teacher, they ignore all these and start the 1st chords without hand exercises on and off the guitar, so the student ends up using the wrist more than the finger. It takes time to learn to only use the fingers, and it is easier said than done. And the more you progress like that, the worse it gets. It is also hard for all fingers to be next to each other on different frets. Some chords, like D minor with the pinkie being on the 2nd string 3rd fret, make you use the wrist. I just want to know exercises so the fingers do these naturally. I can play chords but with hurting and using a lot of wrist muscles. I am now used to the fingertip pain, and it no longer bothers me this much even when it hurts...
