I see you covered “mi scusi” here as a polite way to begin a question. I was wondering if that could be used when walking around and you bump into or wanted to pass by a slow walker? Would or really could you use “mi scusi” there? (I think I saw it is not common or something else is used so wanted to check). Grazie.

Learn them? Sure… Will you need them? No. Unless you’re planning on traveling to some remote town or village, sure. But I can tell you 100% as I type this from my AirBnB in Rome, the second you try to speak Italian, they will switch to English. As soon as opened my mouth to take a breath, they started speaking English and I took classes for almost a year and can hold a decent conversation… didn’t matter, they switched to English. It came in handy on my ride back to Rome from Vasto and I needed gas and the attendant was as 80 year old Italian that I needed to ask directions.

Point is, learn like 5-10 words if you want to feel cool, but you don’t really have to.
