Video Overview & Insights

You might have heard of insomnia or hypersomnia from symptoms of depression. But have you heard about the other following sleep disorders? Here's a list of what we cover: sleep related eating disorder, nocturnal driving disorder, somniloquy, sexsomnia, REM sleep behaviour disorder, exploding head syndrome, Kleine-leving syndrome, narcolepsy, nightmare disorder, and restless legs syndrome.

Who else is awake when they should be sleeping right now? Comment below guilty birds.

— @Psych2go

Which of these have you personally experienced?

Sleep disorders, also known as parasomnias, happen when people are waking up, falling asleep, or sleeping. These disorders vary between people and most don’t remember what they did when they wake up. Sleep disorders can occur during different sleep stages, in all sexes, and in all ages

I have never had any of these.disorders before

— @KelseyNguyen-d6u

Disclaimer: Do not use this video to self diagnose. If you are experiencing any of these, know that you are not alone.

Special thanks to our patreon supporter for this month:

I have several sleep disorders. Several. Some havent happened in awhile or were worse wgen i was younger. Others gave gotten worse has ive gotten older. I cant think of the word but it comes before "rhythm". Arcadiam, cicadiam, you know what i mean. but i baisicly dont have one of those. I get the exploading head syndrome. But not as frequent as it used to be. I definitely have sleep paralysis. Which leads to night terrors on a bad night and lucid dreaming or astro projecting on a good night. Or afternoon or morning, when everit is ive actually gotten to sleep. I get severe insomnia. Having paralysis and night terrors makes me afraid to go to sleep at night. I have to have a night light. But its hard to sleep with the light on so i put something over my eyes i can rip off easily when something scares me. Which is everything. Ive dreamnt i was getting ready for school or work only to find out i was still asleep. Thats one that was worse when i was younger. Ive always had to plan everything for late afternoon, take night classes, and tale thenigjt shift because i litteraly cannot function in the morning. Im so used to my backwards rhythm life. Even if it is somewhat normal for a little while. If i havet set an alarm because i have something to do in the morning. I will not fall asleep until an hour or less before the alarm is set to go off. But when i am able to fall asleep, i can sleep. Once every two or three months my body will just give out and i can sleep for like 15 plus hours and nothing, no one can wake me up. Its all destroyed my life. Oh yeah, we wont talk about restless leg syndrome. Except to say a lot of cases are due to withdrawl or detoxing.

Nightmare disorder is the worst. Dreamed I choked up half a lung and was dying alone in a field last night. Worst thing about it is doctors either can't or won't prescribe medication that will reduce/get rid of the nightmares. When you have a nightmare disorder, rest is a luxury that is infrequent. I have nightmares inside nightmares inside nightmares. I have been in post-apocalyptic war zones having to find cover long enough to doze, other times I live entire lifetimes only to be jarringly thrown back into my true life and people I have created in my mind, parents, siblings and children are just gone. Its hard to keep going sometimes.

I've been having sleep problems for several years, where I go to bed at the regular hour, (let's say 10:00), and then inexplicably, I wake up at 1-3 AM for seemingly no reason. And then I cannot fall back asleep until it's nearly 6-8. Then I sleep till it's 12 or 2 in the afternoon.

My parents think it's phone and wifi related, but I've had this issue without my phone or wifi for weeks at some periods, and the problem persists. How can I fix or at least know what I have, because my parents are stripping everything away from me because of it. I need help

I have nightmare disorder, I don't always wake up during my sleep but I always feel bad for the entire day due to the horrible things I see during my sleep.
For the restless legs syndrom, I experienced it due to a medication named Abilify, used for mood regulation. It's a well-known secondary effect of this medication.

I experienced the Nightmare disorder for about 7 years? I would always have the same or similar nightmare every Halloween. It made me very anxious to go anywhere and I never felt safe in my own home for weeks. I couldn’t distinguish sometimes reality from the dream. I was very paranoid during my episodes. Until finally they’d just go away. Only to return again next year.

Eventually it got so bad one night that I was awake sobbing at night because I couldn’t go back to sleep without reentering the nightmare. I cried myself to sleep and since that night I’ve never had those nightmares again.
All I remember before falling asleep was this feeling of serenity and calmness. Like a baby bird being covered by the wings of its parent. It was so odd feeling, but I’m glad the nightmares are finally gone.

I've had nightmares my whole life. Pretty well every night.
They don't really wake me up fully from sleep anymore.
But I wonder if they're preventing me from getting a restful sleep. I'm always tired when I wake up, often times more tired until I can recall the dream and try to work through it.

— @azuza44

i have some of these . i feel annoyed when i do them due to the inconveniences and effects it can have on others

I have nightmare disorder. It's not fun. And most people brush it off as I'm complaining about nothing, but they have no idea what having nightmares everytime one closes ones eyes is like. They range from waking up in a cold sweat to waking up screaming. The other night I was thrashing and actually threw out my back and bruised myself in several places. My partner sleeps in a different room when we are home together and perfers night work. He finds it absolutely heartbreaking to see me in this state. It's been happening forever. When I was kid my dad would yell at me and both my parents were convinced I was doing it for attention.

For sake of interesting series of events and story to tell, out of this list nightmare disorder paired with many things, but I'll elaborate

I have C-PTSD and severe sleep apnea, I've always had common nightmares but the last couple years I'd have sleep paralysis, night terrors, and multiple different or reoccurring nightmares in one night, at one point having 5 nightmares in a row all of which I woke up in physical distress, I had so many nightmares and experienced sleep paralysis fairly often (about once a month or every other month) that I developed somniphobia, and insomnia. My body would be physically exhausted but I'd keep moving until I'd just break into sleep, I've been awake for more than 24 hours on multiple occasions and atleast been awake for more than 36 hours atleast twice, I also have psychosis, and I'd experience tactile hallucinations especially when I was sleep deprived, specifically feeling like there was bugs crawling all over me, specifically small ants, where I felt like I had to shake them off, fast forward, the only thing that helps me sleep now, is streaming horror gameplays, cause it's hard for me to have nightmares or anxiety about going to sleep or while sleeping when I can hear someone going through a scary story, but also joking, or reviewing it in the background, aswell as, it's a video that I can change if I really don't like it, I can just pick another, unlike nightmares where it's kind of hard to pick, so if I'm stuck dreaming or feeling like I might dream about it, I'll just change it to something I'm more familiar with. I have at points gotten very physically ill attempting to sleep in new environments that weren't the one I was decently used to aswell, I ended up throwing up and getting headaches cause my body just couldn't handle the change of environment

Hi don't know how relevant my comment is I think I have sleeping disorder it's very similar to sleep paralysis but isn't I struggle to fall asleep but when I do I can't hear anything or feel anything I am talking about screaming kids water being poured on or being shaken I can't feel anything but I seem to open my eyes respond but I will have no recollection of doing such and I go straight back to sleep afterwards like nothing ever happened it's been like this for years and I don't even remember having a single dream or know what dreams are or like
