10 Forgotten 90s Sci-Fi Movies You'll Wish You'd Seen Sooner

Video Overview & Insights

Before The Matrix. Before the MCU. Before Hollywood decided sci-fi had to cost $200 million to matter.

Hm, I haven't seen any of these and they sound quite cool! Also, quite strange to see this recommendation after in Thursday, I asked someone to recommend me nice sci fi movies. I guess the listening algorithm of my phone got really good.

— @denijane89

The 1990s were absolutely overflowing with science fiction, and the big releases ate everything else alive. Terminator 2. Independence Day. The Matrix. Those films sucked all the oxygen out of the room, and a whole wave of weirder, bolder, stranger sci-fi got buried underneath them.

We're talking about Mick Jagger as a futuristic bounty hunter. Russell Crowe playing an AI built from the personalities of 200 serial killers, four years before Gladiator made him a star. An Italian cyberpunk film that asked "are we living in a simulation" two full years before The Matrix made it a cultural conversation. A prison movie set in 2022 that nobody made a single "this predicted the future" video about when we actually lived through that year.

Screamers is one of my favorite movies. Its so good.

— @SapphireMist888

Some of these films are great. Some are great because they're an absolute mess. Every single one of them is more interesting than half the stuff that actually blew up that decade.

Films covered in this video:

I saw the #1 movie. Man, did it ever creep me out.

4:28 Split Second is comically bad! I thought it was a terminator rip off at first

@theImposter505
@

Dark City & Strange Days also deserve mentions in the list. 2 of my favorite sci-fi flicks from that decade. Dark City especially was overshadowed by The Matrix, but it's honestly a brilliant movie.

Six String Samurai could be here as well☺️

For a better experience watch Nirvana in its original Italian language

I have been a fan of Split Second for decades!

Freejack is unwatchable tbh it flopped for a reason. OMFG no escape i had completely forgotten about that movie. nemesis is a classic. the best line of the whole movie is " the f*cking humans" vitusosity does NOT hold up. its pretty bad by modern standards. i recently re-watched it. and the arrical is a masterpiece tbh probably charlies best work ever

@frankbones8349
@

No Escape was when they could still make authentic movies about men.

@wackityshack

I'm a 90s kid who absorbed trashy action movies, and I've only seen 3 of these. Screamers still rocks, I rented that VHS many times. It's was my tremors before tremors became my tremors.

@joet5525
@

Lol, I've seen 8 of 10 of them :D

@XorxoxTalarius

Split second and I come in peace ( Dark angel) is basically the same movie..Cop And Sidekick

@Tyrone-d8p

I think virus [1999] was underrated!

Virtuosity was SF good.

@ScottPSilver

I’ve happily seen all of these. And used to o own a few on VHS

@Travkat75video

There used to be these actors who were everywhere in the late 80s to early 90s. Lambert was one of them, also Michael Ironside.

Nirvana is amazing, btw.

@ostrodmit

why are there snowflakes and sparklers everywhere? AI slop

Have seen all of these and the sequels for Fortress, Screamers, Nemesis, and The Arrival. I remember when Freejack came out seeing some interview with Mick and he was talking about how they kept telling him to slow down his movements cause his head and stuff were just moving around so fast like he does on stage lol.

@JonnyBoy07a
@

I liked Freejack. Virtuosity should have done better too. Good, good flick.

@davidreynolds3634
@

Screeners was amazing. I saw it as a rerun on TNT or Superstation as a kid and was like “how the heck did i miss this gem”.

It’s the best sleeper scifi hit imo

@jellymop

Yeah google buries search results of older movies 😂😅 19:39

I mean if Fortress flaunts those Commodore 64 keycaps, I just have to see it all.

@ramsa410

I immediately thought of the movie Life Force.
But that was made in 1985.

A truly brilliant movie.

I remember watching only #1 and 2. I enjoyed them.

Freejack was ruined by Estevez getting the roll. He was awful and any other semi known actor would have been better. . Screamers is a very good movie even though the animation for the machines was pretty bad

@JasonBrown-g9u
@

I've seen all but the Italian one.

@ballsyau1974
@

Seen at least half of these lol

@garethpreen8077

Seen 7 out of 10 not so bad :)

@fatcat7msk7ru

Phillip K Dick’s work is all over film, that guy was way ahead of his time. He predicted nearly all of this surveillance/govt control going on and there’s probably more to come in the future that he touched on.

@TreAnastasio
@

If you had HBO back in the day, you've seen most of these 🏆

@umdadvocate
@

I saw "No Escape" as a kid and it's DAMN awesome action flick. Old school 80s and 90s action awesomeness at its best. "Virtuosity" was the first hint that Denzel Washington could do action and do it damn well long before "Man on Fire" or "Book of Eli".

@ironhead2008
@

When someone mentions Rutger Hauer in some obscure movie my first response is something akin to "Say no more, you've sold me on it..." The man cannot do wrong in my eye lol.

@ironhead2008
@

I’ve seen a Split Second and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the Ray Liotta one. Heard of many of the others. Maybe one day I’ll get to watch them too.
Edit: pretty sure I’ve seen FreeJack as well. Maybe at 2am after a fat blunt though, so…

Seen Freejack
Seen Hardware.. Great movie and it's banned in some countries.
Never seen Split Second.. sound interesting. 🤔
Never seen Fortress I like Christopher Lambert.
Never seen Nirvana.. movie looks meh. I like the Movie The Hunted with the same actor C.L and it's from the 90's too.
Seen Screamers.. Epic movie with Peter Weller. It's such a classic. they have made a sequel.
Seen No Escape Ray Liotta.. and several known actors like Lance Hendrickson, Ernie Hudson made this movie a film to remember.
Never Seen Nemesis.. I might give it a try.
Seen Virtuosity.. good movie and Ricochet is another great title.
Seen Arrival "Do you want to see the ruins my friend?" Charlie Sheen follow up action still makes me laugh.😂
