People have this misapprehension that a human body can be located and identified years, even decades or centuries later and thus even if they are killed should always be able to be found. This is not necessarily true; it depends entirely on local environmental conditions and local scavenging fauna from as small as bacteria to as large as mountain lions. A body can "vanish without a trace" in as little as a month, just from natural forces even if the initial accident that claimed their life happened in public parkland. Consider the many thousands of medium to large animals who die in wilderness areas every year... occasionally you might hear of someone finding a deer skull or something, but most times you'll never find even that. Nature consumes, quite efficiently.
